2016 IBPS Austin Buddha’s Birthday Festival & One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition IBPS Austin Xiang Yun Temple 2016-05-26 | May 21, 2016 marked a historic event in Austin as the Xiang Yun Temple celebrated Buddha’s birthday with a formal Dharma service and the bathing of the Buddha at the State Capitol for the first time. Special guests included State Representative Elliott Naishtat from the Texas House of Representatives; Rabbi Marie Betcher from the American Conference of Cantors; Reverend Meg Barnhouse from the First Unitarian Universalist Church; Ms. Shelley Jauh-Shiang Chen, President of the Austin Hakka Association; Venerable Linh Chon from the Linh Son Temple; Mr. Dongpo Huang, President of the Austin Chinese Retirees Association; Mr. Ashwin Ghatalia of the Indian American Coalition of Texas; Venerable Nguyen Pham from the Hue Lam Temple; Chairman Xiaomin James Wu from the Greater Austin Chinese Chamber of Commerce; and President Steven Yau from the Austin-Taichung Sister Cities Committee. The ceremony began with offerings to the Buddha. Mr. Cheong Min Hong and Miss Li Huei Huang served as hosts, and they announced each group in order. The Vajra group began the procession with offerings of incense, followed by the Qui Pao group, which offered flowers. The Qui Pao group was followed by the Tang-attire group, which presented the offering of the lamp, and the Indian-attire group, which presented the offering of fruit. The Youth Group then presented the offering of food. The last group to make an offering was the Vietnamese-attire team, which presented the offering of the Dharma gem. After the offerings, Mr. Cheong Min Hong and Miss Li Huei Huang introduced the distinguished guests. Venerable Chueh Fa and the other Venerables from the Xiang Yun Temple then conducted the Dharma service. After the service, State Representative Elliott Naishtat made a brief speech in which he pointed out that the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order was established by the Venerable Master Hsing Yun in 1967 and that Buddhists all over the world are now preparing for the 50th anniversary. Then, he cut the ribbon to officially open the One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition. This was followed by the Bathing of the Buddha ceremony, in which all of the Venerables, Distinguished Guests, and members of the Xiang Yun Temple participated.After the Bathing of the Buddha Ceremony, the attendees enjoyed wonderful performances by musicians and dancers, including dancers from the Natyalaya School of Dance, the Austin Dance India, and the Austin Filipino American Association Dance Group; vocal performances by Ms. Shelley Jauh-Shiang Chen (professional soprano) and Ana Zhao; and a special performance by the Austin Filipino American Association band, which also provided the musical accompaniment for the Austin Filipino American Association Dance Group. Two of the highlights of the day were the performances of 9 year-old Ana Zhao, and Abigail Hu and Yang Rong playing the Gu-Zheng, a Chinese instrument invented 2,500 years ago. The weather held up well, and everyone agreed that this historic event was a great success. About 1,000 participants, including invited guests, performers, volunteers and onlookers, joyfully attended the event.
