A two-mile trail, the Saunders-Monticello Trail, winds through the park before ascending the side of Carter Mountain toward Monticello. The trail then leads directly to the Monticello ticket office over the recently completed stone-arch Saunders Bridge. A pedestrian underpass marks the lower trail head. Elevated boardwalks, a pond, an overlook and an arboretum of native trees and shrubs mark this scenic trail to Monticello.
With native hardwood forest, deep ravines and spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the trail winds its way toward Monticello and back in a very manageable four miles. A maximum grade of 5% keeps it completely accessible to walkers, cyclists and those in wheelchairs.
The Saunders-Monticello Trail and Kemper Park are open all year, 7am to 7pm. Restroom and drink facilities are available at the David M. Rubenstein visitor center.
It's a great run with a good grades, especially on a beautiful day like this. The Complete Run: Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6k Run October 15, 2017John Kelm2017-10-17 | The complete course through the streets of Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6k run on Sunday, October 15, 2017. Low humidity, excellent visibility, and temps in the low 70's made the ride be over much too soon. This is the fourth time I've ridden the trail and each time I like it more. The Pennsylvania segment is smooth and well maintained. The scenery is amazing especially when punctuated with an occasional CSX freight train running by. During this ride, one came up behind and to the left of me.
You reach Lowellville, Ohio about seven miles into the ride west. It's a nice little town that, if you have time, to veer off the trail and ride around it.
About two or so miles from the Struthers trail head, there is a sports facility where there are restrooms, the only available on the trail that I'm aware of.
The Ohio segment of the trail, while still just as scenic is not as well maintained as the Pennsylvania portion. The trail has pavement buckles, tree roots, and some jarring cracks. You can mitigate the bumps some my slowing and looking for relatively smoother spots in the pavement. Or you can even leave the trail around Lowellville and ride on smooth pavement at the high school.
The state of the Ohio pavement is just a heads up. Overall, the trail is a joy to ride fast or slow.GoPro The Three Rivers Heritage Bike Trail: Pittsburghs North ShoreJohn Kelm2016-06-22 | A leisurely ride on the on the Pittsburgh North Shore segment of the Three Rivers Heritage Bike Trail.
