Inner Path Seekers | Mental health support
Lost His Limbs, Found His Purpose | Alex Lewis Interview

They were a spouse, a parent, a child, a sibling, a friend… and each of those relationships carries its own unique grief.
In this clip, palliative care expert Bridget Sumser shares a powerful reminder: even though we’re mourning the same person, the way we grieve can look and feel very different.
🎧 Listen to the full conversation on Inner Path Seekers — an episode about grief, loss, death, and dying. Topics we learn so little about, yet ones we’ll all eventually face.
Grief and loss touch us all, yet they’re often the hardest to talk about. In this episode, I speak with Bridget Sumser, a licensed clinical social worker with over a decade in palliative and end-of-life care.
She has stood by the bedsides of hundreds of dying people, trains professionals in palliative principles, co-edited Palliative Care: A Guide for Health Social Workers (2019), and works with Mettle Health offering online support.
If you’ve lost someone or simply want to better understand grief, I truly hope this episode can bring you comfort, insight, and guidance.

This conversation is not just about loss, but about courage, ❤️ love, and the painful yet transformative path of grief.
Through tears, pain, and love, Phil found that healing comes not from running away, but from walking straight into the grief.
If you are grieving, I hope this conversation with Phil—and the others we have had in this series on loss and grief—can provide support, insight, and guidance on your grieving journey.

In this short clip from the full conversation on Inner Path Seekers, Phil Cohen — @GriefGuy — shares the devastating moment he realized his son Perry wasn’t coming home.
This episode is part of our ongoing series on grief and loss, giving voice to stories on this subject, and creating a space to talk about grief and learn from those who have gone through it — and how they eventually, despite the deep pain, managed to integrate this experience into their life. 🌿
🎧 If you want to listen to the full conversation with Phil Cohen, and learn all that he has discovered from losing his son, check out the full conversation by simply searching Inner Path Seekers on your favorite podcast app or on YouTube.
Phil Cohen lost his 14-year-old son, Perry, at sea in 2015. What followed was a journey through grief that transformed his life. It’s not a journey Phil ever wished for. Nor is it for anyone when they lose someone dear to them.
In this conversation, Phil Cohen, also known as The Grief Guy, shares his profound journey of loss and how he navigated the depths of grief—so that you may hopefully find insights, takeaways, and, most of all, support if you are going through your own grieving process.
Today, Phil helps others who have lost someone through his workshops, which you can learn more about at philcohen.com.
I sincerely hope this episode, along with the others we have done and will do in this series on grief and loss, provides some light—a beacon of hope—through the darkness you may be walking.

Frank lost his dad when he was 9 years old, and just a few years later, at 11, he lost his mom as well. Thus, he became a foster child.
We don’t talk much about loss and grief in Western society, and there isn’t much space for these conversations. Often, we’re expected to ‘move on’ as quickly as possible. Yet, it’s only when you lose someone dear that you realize it’s not such a simple task.
Hopefully, this episode—and the others we’ve done—can provide a space, a moment where you can feel that there is no rush and no judgment, that you can allow feelings like grief to be there if you’ve recently lost someone, or even if it’s been years.

We take the time to do just that by speaking with psychologists and health experts who specialize in grief, as well as with people who have experienced the deep pain of losing someone they love, like our guest in this episode, @LauraMaliszewska.
Laura shares her deeply personal journey of losing her mother, Sylwia, to pleural cancer six years ago, just as Laura was turning 24.
She speaks openly about witnessing her mother’s seven-year battle with cancer and tells the story of Sylwia—a physical education teacher who became a beacon of strength for everyone around her, continuing to run marathons and lift weights even as she faced her illness.
This episode explores the raw, often messy complexities of grief, reminding us that it is not a straight path, and it’s okay to have ups and downs along the way.
But it’s also a path we don’t have to walk alone. We hope that these conversations on grief and loss offer you comfort, answers, and a sense of support if you are moving through a season of loss yourself—and that this first episode with Laura might help you feel a little less alone.

In this video/episode, I'm opening up about something deeply personal I've never fully shared before: my journey through depression during my teenage years.
From ages 12 to 18, my life often felt like a blur—a confusing and lonely time marked by self-isolation, self-harm, and a constant need to escape reality.
Over the last 14 years, I've had a lot of time to think about that period in my life and about why I ended up with such severe depression.
Combined with my studies in psychology (I'm currently studying to become a clinical psychologist), I’ve started to see more and more of the puzzle pieces—the ingredients—that led to this dish called depression.
My goal here isn’t just to tell my story, but to shed light on the common “ingredients” that often contribute to depression.
Through my psychology studies, I’ve seen these patterns show up repeatedly, and if you’re struggling with depression, you might recognize them in your own life too.
Of course, I’m also sharing what finally helped me get out of that depression. I could have shared countless things, but looking back, there were only three that truly had a significant impact on me.
And I believe they can have an impact on you as well—not only because they changed my life so deeply, but also because I’ve seen them come up again and again in my psychology training.

Extensive meta-analyses reveal that spending time in nature offers powerful, evidence-based benefits across a wide range of health conditions 🌍. From high blood pressure and cholesterol issues to pregnancy outcomes, cancer care, anxiety, and depression—nature consistently supports better health outcomes.
In fact, nature could be prescribed as a form of treatment for almost anyone.
Spring and summer are here — the perfect time to get outside and soak up the season. 🌞🌿
To inspire you, here’s a short clip from our interview with Dr. Melissa Lem, a physician who literally prescribes nature to her patients, exploring why nature is so good for us.
There are two psychological theories explaining nature's benefits:
🌿 Attention Restoration Theory suggests nature helps our brains recover from the constant overload of city life — traffic, screens, and noise 🚦📱. Nature offers calm, gentle stimulation that restores focus and eases mental fatigue.
🌿 Stress Reduction Theory shows that nature lowers cortisol (your stress hormone), relaxes the body, and boosts your immune system. Even the scent of pine trees or microbes in the soil can help. 🌲🌱
Nature isn’t just a break — it’s medicine. 🍃
In this personal and moving reflection, Elaine (@Drakoadventure) shares a piece of insight from her 4-year journey through depression — from hiding her pain to discovering the courage to be vulnerable. Inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold, she reminds us that our cracks aren’t flaws to conceal, but marks of resilience to honor.
💛 “You don’t have to be perfect. There’s beauty in the brokenness — when you repair it.”

For decades, we were told depression was caused by a "chemical imbalance"—specifically, low serotonin 🧠. But what if that theory was never actually true? 🤔
📽️ In this striking clip, Dr. David Burns—a renowned psychiatrist—discusses a landmark 1975 study on depressed veterans. This study tested the serotonin theory head-on using massive doses of L-tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin.
The result?
🚫 No antidepressant effect.
🚫 No improvement.
🚫 No difference.
This study was ignored for 25 years.
Dr. Burns, known for his groundbreaking book Feeling Good, has long challenged mainstream psychiatric models, advocating instead for non-drug approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy—tools that empower individuals to transform their thinking 💬💡.
💭 Negative thoughts like "I'm not good enough" or "Things will never change" fuel depression and anxiety. This idea dates back 1700 years to Stoic philosopher Epictetus: We are not disturbed by events, but by our perception of them.
💡 Understanding this could be the first step to real change.

Living with depression can strip life of its color. It is painful, can feel hopeless, and often leads to deep loneliness. While hearing the stories of others who have faced depression may not magically fix what you’re going through, it can offer reassurance that you are not alone. More importantly, it may provide a sense of understanding and hope.

Do you know which path you take most often?
Learn more about these paths and an additional tool—the cognitive triangle. Discover how these insights can help you choose the path of growth more often by watching the full video: youtu.be/E6EzrtC0Ssk?si=RpnGmJRFwuIJ6WuX
1. Stay Still: Avoid the decision, remain in your comfort zone, and risk stagnation.
2. Take the Destructive Route: Fall back on unhealthy habits or coping mechanisms.
3. Choose Growth: Take the hard but rewarding path of self-improvement and personal growth.
While standing still might feel safe and destructive habits may seem familiar, both ultimately lead to a difficult and unhappy life. Growth, on the other hand, is the harder choice—it means confronting fears, stepping into the unknown, and taking responsibility for the situation we are in. Without a doubt, it is the hard path. However, it will ultimately lead to a much easier, more meaningful, and happier life.
In this video/episode, learn more about these paths, as well as an additional tool—the cognitive triangle—and how these two tools can help you choose the path of growth more frequently.

Comparing yourself to others can be useful if it leads to a healthy perspective. However, more often than not, it can cause you to dismiss your own problems, pain, and hurt by thinking that someone else has it worse than you.
This isn't helpful, as it prevents you from recognizing and acknowledging your own pain. If you don't take your own struggles seriously, you won't be able to support yourself effectively.
#mentalhealth #shorts #psychology
One thing we all have in common is that, through the journey of life, we will inevitably experience pain and suffering in some form. You might ask yourself: Why go on when life is full of pain and suffering?
The answer lies in recognizing that pain and suffering can also be opportunities for personal growth and a deeper sense of connection with others.
By reframing the story, pain can become more than mere unpleasantness—it can lead to transformation.

Despite our differences in ethnicity, gender, age, and other factors, we all share the experience of life, which often involves pain and suffering. Behind anyone's eyes, there is a battle being fought that you know nothing about. Everyone has experienced pain and suffering in life or is currently experiencing it.
In a way, there is something beautiful and touching about this shared experience. There is nothing quite like pain and suffering to connect and bring us together as human beings. The only barrier to experiencing that connection is our vulnerability...

My goal is for this video to introduce new ways of dealing with suffering and pain or serve as a reminder of strategies that might help lighten your burden—even if just a little.

In evolutionary psychology 🧠, there's often discussion about the mismatch between our modern environment 🌆 and the way our brains evolved to function 🧬. While our lives have transformed dramatically in recent years ⏳, our brains haven't kept pace with these changes.
This disconnection is particularly striking given the rise in depression and mental health issues globally 🌍😔.
Even as modern and wealthy countries achieve unprecedented levels of progress 💸📈, it's curious that depression and mental health issues seem to be on the rise 📉. This paradox has led psychologists, including Dr. Stephen Ilardi 🧑⚕️, to question its causes. Could it be that our modern lifestyles are misaligned with those of our ancestors? 🏕️👣

Sleep is something we all need, whether we like it or not. Almost everyone has questions about sleep and wants to improve it. As we know, not sleeping well for even one night affects us the next day. Many have experienced poor sleep for weeks, months, or years, leading to emotional and physical issues.
Yet, people are sleeping worse than ever, with problems like sleep apnea and insomnia on the rise (Dr. Breus discusses these in our interview). Modern life, with its constant noise from cities, cars, planes, and early/late work hours, has worsened sleep quality globally.
An episode on how to sleep better at night naturally is long overdue. I reached out to Dr. Michael Breus, the sleep doctor, to educate us and provide tips on better sleep.
