Khao Laem Dam Project, Thailand (Construction during the 1981- 83 period) Tony B 2020-05-26 | The Khao Laem Dam was constructed in the early-mid 1980's.It is located in the River Kwai valley near the Thai-Burma border some 280 kms NW of Bangkok.It is a multipurpose project with benefits ranging from flood mitigation, irrigation and generation of hydro-electric power.The client was the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).The Clients Engineer (Designer and Contracts Manager) was the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corp. (SMEC).The prime contractor for the Dam and Power Station was Ital-Thai Development (ITD) Corp in technical association with Electrowatt Losinger of Switzerland).The 25th Anniversary of the commissioning of the project was celebrated at the project site in December 2011.The dam construction was technically very complex due to the karstic limestone foundation conditions requiring extensive grouting, piling and deep diaphragm wall leakage cutoffs to be installed in the foundations.I was privileged to work as the SMEC Dam Engineer in the 1981-83 period accompanied by my young family at the time.Tony Beach
