Among the many awe-inspiring, futuristic attractions at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair was the Bell System Pavilion. This video shows raw footage of the 1965 re-opening of that popular exhibit at the start of the Fair's second and final season.
Dubbed the world's first "Billion Dollar Fair" while still under construction, the New York Fair was actually built upon a landfill in Flushing Meadows, Queens. When completed, it sported no fewer than 140 pavilions over 646 acres—2.5 of which were occupied by the Bell System Exhibit.
Held in the midst of the Cold War during the decade that marked the "Space Race" between the Soviet Union and the United States, the theme for the Fair was "Man's Achievement in an Expanding Universe" and its purpose was to stress "Peace Through Understanding."
To insure an impressive exhibit, AT&T culled together a group of highly regarded experts in various fields of design, with famed industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss serving as general design consultant and Max Abramovitz as Bell Pavilion architect. Abramovitz had just completed work on Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall—later renamed Avery Fisher Hall.
Jo Mielziner, master stage designer of more than 250 Broadway productions, including South Pacific, The King and I and A Streetcar Named Desire, was brought in to create the Pavilion's main event—a chair ride designed to move about 41,000 visitors a day through a series of vignettes that traced the evolution of communications. Mielziner created an adventure for riders, who—nestled in a moving armchair complete with a built-in stereo headset—glided through a 15-minute sequence of three-dimensional stage settings, projections, sound effects and a musical score by composer Morton Gould with lyrics by American poet Joseph Langland.
The New York World's Fair ran for two six-month seasons from April 22, 1964 to October 18, 1964, and again from April 21, 1965 to October 17, 1965.
