If a land plane crashed into the sea, it was lost—but a seaplane wasn’t necessarily doomed. This was the golden age of flying boats, a hybrid between ships and airplanes. They took off from lakes, rivers, or coastal waters of the oceans.The film tells the story of the daring plans of polar explorer Roald Amundsen, who aimed to be the first person to fly over the North Pole using the German flying boat Dornier Wal. However, he never reached his goal. His crew was forced to make an emergency landing and fought desperately for survival. They managed to escape by creating a runway out of ice and snow to take off again. These dramatic moments were captured on camera and are revisited in the documentary.An equally spectacular story was the airmail route over the South Atlantic. The distances were so long that the flying boats had to refuel in the open sea. Supply ships hoisted the planes on board, refueled them, and catapulted them toward the Brazilian coast.During World War II, massive flying boats transported supplies to the front lines and helped hunt submarines and ships. The largest flying boat ever built, Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose, lifted off the water only once—for just a short flight. In 1943, Blohm & Voss in Hamburg constructed the world’s largest seaplane at the time—the BV 238. It was hidden in Lake Schaalsee in 1945 to serve as an escape option for high-ranking Nazi officials from Berlin. When the British got wind of it, they feared Hitler himself might try to flee using the plane. Fighter bombers located and destroyed the BV 238.Only two giant Martin Mars flying boats have survived to this day. They are now used as water bombers to fight wildfires. It was the first civilian aircraft to regularly carry passengers at supersonic speed. With a speed of Mach 2 (around 2,180 km/h), the Concorde was twice as fast as conventional passenger aircraft and could carry up to 100 passengers. Its slim fuselage and delta wings made the Concorde aerodynamically efficient. It was operated by Air France and British Airways and was mainly used on transatlantic routes such as Paris-New York and London-New York. Its maiden flight took off in 1969, followed by regular operations in 1976. Concorde was seen as a symbol of technological progress and luxury. However, there were also economic challenges, including high operating costs, its limited passenger capacity and environmental concerns due to its sonic boom and fuel consumption. On July 25 2000, a tragic crash occurred at Gonesse near Paris. Air France flight AF 4590 was due to fly from Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle to New York, but ended in disaster just a few minutes after take-off, killing 113 people. In dieser waldreichen Region sind die rund 3600 Einwohner des Dorfes stolz darauf, jedes Jahr Fahrer aus dem ganzen Land willkommen zu heißen. Die Rennen finden auf einer Strecke im Wald statt. Jeden Sommer versammeln sich dort Tausende von Enthusiasten, um diese spektakulären Rennen zu verfolgen. Die vielen Kurven und unterschiedlichen Bodenbeläge werden sorgfältig vorbereitet, um den Autofahrern das Leben schwer zu machen - und damit die Rennen spannend. Gemeinsam mit seinem Freund Mika hat Timo im vergangenen Herbst einen alten Volvo gekauft, der jetzt für die große Rally aufgemotzt werden soll. Timo ist auch Mitglied im „Pello Motor Sports Club“, der die Veranstaltung seit über dreißig Jahren organisiert. Mit an den Start gehen aber auch andere Einwohner von Pello. Vor allem auf Anne-Mari freuen sich viele. Sie ist ein ehemals sehr erfolgreicher Star in der Rally-Szene. Viele Jahre ließ sie alle Konkurrentinnen hinter sich.
