Wegeners Theory of the Continental Drift Completely Weird 2018-08-30 | Wegener's Theory of the Continental DriftIn this video we will learn how Alfred Wegener proposed a theory in 1912 that the great continents of the Earth had drifted over geological time and were once all joined together in a giant land mass we now call Pangaea.His idea was based on the way present day continents fit neatly together, and by the way bands of fossil-bearing rocks join up across continents. Unfortunately Wegener was unable to provide a mechanism for this movement, and his theory was ridiculed by the scientific community until 1965 when the theory of plate tectonics was published. This proposed that the continents were moved around on great plates driven by convection currents in the hot mantle of the earth. Perhaps the most dramatic evidence came from the magnetism of rocks each side of the mid ocean ridges. When rocks solidify they become weakly magnetic in the direction of the earth’s magnetic field. However every few million years the earth’s magnetic field ‘flips’ so the North magnetic pole becomes South pole, and this change is signalled in the rocks. Scientists found that the rocks each side of the mid ocean ridge were magnetised first in one direction and then in another. Magma solidifies, locking in the magnetism; new magma forms as the plates move apart, the magnetic field reverses, more magma solidifies locking in the reversed polarity, and so on, creating a pattern that repeats each side of the ridge with the rocks getting older the further you are from the ridge – clear evidence of the ocean moving apart over millions of years. Further evidence came from plotting where the earth’s volcanoes and earthquakes were situated. From this map you can see that they form lines around the globe, marking out the edges of the great tectonic plates. You get almost all earthquakes and volcanoes at plate boundaries. And finally, we find the great mountain ranges right alongside where two plates are pushing into each other. The Himalaya are being thrust upwards as India moved, and is still moving, slowly into Asia. As the Pacific plate is subducted under the Asian plate, the islands of Japan with many earthquakes and volcanoes and the deep ocean trench to the east were formed and are still being formed. To summarise, the theory of continental drift was published by Wegener in 1912 with evidence that the continents were once all joined together. In 1965 it began to be accepted when plate tectonics provided a mechanism for moving the continents. This was supported by evidence of spreading at mid ocean ridges and from the pattern of earthquakes and volcanoes which outlined the earth’s tectonic plates. Under conditions typical for thin cirrus ice clouds, however, the plasma channels induced a surprisingly strong effect of ice multiplication." In addition he said, “Within a few minutes, the laser action led to a strong enhancement of the total ice particle number density in the chamber by up to a factor of 100, even though only a 10−9 fraction of the chamber volume was exposed to the plasma channels. It creates a huge dust plume that completely covers the globe, blocking out all sunlight. Temperatures in the vicinity are so high that it literally cooks anything living alive within seconds. The event then sets off a chain of global catastrophes.Now just imagine for a moment an object much bigger, could be a million to a trillion times more powerful. But it would need to be a much bigger rock. An asteroid is big enough that it is sometimes called a minor planet or planetoid. There are millions of asteroids orbiting the sun and some of these asteroids can be hundreds of kilometers wide: The asteroid Ceres, sometimes referred to as a dwarf planet, is 940 kilometers or 584 miles wide. However, scientists estimate that an asteroid would have to be just 96 kilometers or about 60 miles wide to completely eradicate all life on our planet. We have found 90% of the 1 kilometer or larger asteroids. But it is estimated that there are tens to hundreds of thousands more out there that we cannot see, many hidden by the sun.One day we might wake up to the news that a ‘global killer’ asteroid is headed our way. It is not a matter of if it will happen, but only a matter of when. In real life, asteroids and comets that could hit Earth are called NEO’s or "near-Earth objects", and these objects do pose a threat to life on the planet. Some of you may have seen the movie Armageddon that is about an asteroid the size of Texas that is headed towards the Earth. The idea to save mankind is to drill a deep place and drop a nuclear weapon into the drilled spot, therefore fracturing and splitting the giant rock in two. But in order to blow up an asteroid the size of the one in the film, the bomb would have to explode with the same amount of energy as produced by the sun. This idea just wouldn’t be possible and even if you could create such a powerful weapon, it would be more dangerous than the asteroid itself.To many people, "gravitational tractor" may sound like some made-up technology, but the premise is fairly simple. Every object in the universe exerts a gravitational pull, including asteroids and man-made spacecraft. Gravity may be one of the weakest forces in the universe, but is also the most "ready-to-use" since all you need is a little mass. Therefore, it makes sense to unleash it against asteroids. Theoretically, all we'd have to do is navigate a hefty robot close to the asteroid and tow it away with the gentle pull gravity.And while all these ideas sound like they might work, it may turn out that there might be nothing we can do about an asteroid impact.The next time the asteroid will pass close to Earth will be on October 26th, 2028. It is predicted it will be about two and a half times the Moon’s distance from Earth at its closest point. It is estimated to be about a mile wide and is traveling at a speed of 48,000 kilometers or 30,000 miles per hour.
