Our hearts are broken and beating. My heart is here, and my heart is also in Israel,” Weininger said.The Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants invaded Israel, killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped another 250 people, making it the deadliest attack in Israel's history. Pro-Palestinian protesters march in Minneapolis to mark one year of Israel-Hamas war MPR News 2024-10-07 | More than 1,000 Pro-Palestinian protesters marched through downtown Minneapolis on Sunday, Oct. 6 ahead of the one-year mark of the deadly Hamas attack on Israel and Israel's subsequent invasion of Gaza.The Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants invaded Israel, killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped another 250 people, making it the deadliest attack in Israel's history.About 100 hostages have not been returned. Israel's retaliation in Gaza has killed more than 41,000 people and wounded more than 96,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and resulted in mass displacement and a humanitarian crisis.Among the protesters in Minneapolis were Fatma Abumousa and her husband, Jehad Adwan. The couple lives in Blaine, Minnesota. Iconic 1939 Twin Cities diner reopens after 4 years MPR News 2024-10-04 | Mickey's Diner in downtown St. Paul, Minn., quietly re-opened on Oct. 3 after spending more than four years closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Manager Sam Hashish said they weren’t expecting so many people to come in on the first day back, but that he loved seeing the community’s response.While there is no grand opening day set, the diner will initially be open from 7 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m daily and longer hours are possible after the grand opening. Minnesota lineworkers head to Southeast U.S. to help restore power after Hurricane Helene MPR News 2024-10-04 | Dozens of lineworkers from Minnesota utilities are on their way to the Southeast U.S. to help restore power in the wake of Hurricane Helene. The Minnesota Rural Electric Association says 18 power cooperatives across the state are sending a total of 80 workers to the region for one to two weeks — and possibly longer. They will be working to repair outages for three co-ops in South Carolina. One of those co-ops reported 98 percent of its system down following the high winds and flooding. Xcel Energy says it has sent more than 100 employees from Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota and other states to help in the Southeast.And the WNBA semifinals series between the Minnesota Lynx and the Connecticut Sun continues tonight in Connecticut. VP debate references Minnesota Public Radio for reporting on Walzs time in China MPR News 2024-10-02 | During the vice presidential debate on Oct. 1 between Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, CBS News political journalist Margaret Brennan asked Walz about a discrepancy in his accounts of his time in China revealed by reporting from APM Reports, the investigations and documentaries unit of MPR News.Tim Walz has deep experience in China. When he was in his mid-20s, he lived there for about a year, teaching in the southern city of Foshan. His stint with the nonprofit organization WorldTeach started in the summer of 1989, just two months after the Tiananmen Square massacre.He has said in interviews and during other speaking engagements that he was in China during the massacre. He was not. He traveled there later that year.Starting in 1993, he led annual summer trips to China for students in the Nebraska and Minnesota high schools where he taught.
