This one came as a bit of a surprise. I've not been playing Carnival as much in the last few months, maybe a couple of games a week at most. Had a few average games before this and then dropped this game. It's a brutal game that requires both accuracy and speed. There's also a fair amount of RNG that can affect the games difficulty. I think it must have been reasonably kind in this game.
GAME INFO Carnival was released by Sega in 1980. It looks deceptively simple but it's scoring mechanics give it some depth. It takes it's inspiration from a fairground shooting gallery. The objective of the game is to clear each round of all the targets. Sounds simple but you have a finite bullet supply to complicate matters. Extra bullets can be gained by shooting the +bullets bonus box or the 5 and 10 ammo boxes that appear at random intervals.
SCORING Spelling out the word B-O-N-U-S in the correct order awards the player bonus points. The bonus increases with each successful target hit but stops increasing the instant you shoot the B. Hitting the letters out of order results in no bonus.
The rotating pipes in the top centre award the points shown in the box. If you manage to shoot two pipes on the same colour with consecutive shots you get 4X the pipe score. Ideally you want to shoot the pipes early in a round as each shot decreases the pipe bonus amount.
Periodically, a bonus box appears underneath the score. This can give extra bullets or score but can also have anti-bonuses which remove bullets or points.
The main playing field is split into 3 rows. The top row targets are worth the most points The current point value for each row is shown at the right-hand edge of the screen. Targets include ducks, rabbits, owls and ammo boxes. Care must be taken to not let the ducks get to the bottom row; where they will then attempt to fly down and steal 10 bullets from your supply.
THE BONUS ROUNDS After each screen has been cleared you're faced with a bear which can be shot for bonus points. Each hit on the bear reverses it's direction and increases it's speed. Hit it as many times as you can before it reaches the edge of the screen. The number of bears on the screen increases with each bonus round - up to a maximum of 4.
TRIVIA The background music is based on Juventino Rosas' "Sobre las Olas" ("Over the Waves"). This can be turned off/on by hitting the quaver on the right-hand edge of the screen.
The MAME version of Carnival appears to have a bug. If you shoot a negative score bonus when your score is around 85,000 your score is sometimes reset. It's unknown if this can be reproduced on original hardware.

Quite a quirky single-screen platformer with a bizarre jumping mechanic that takes some getting used to. You have to press UP and FIRE simultaneously to perform a vertical jump! This game requires pixel perfect jumps and tricky timings in much the same vein as Manic Miner. Lost 3 lives on the level 'Don't Panic' (I did panic!), which I think is probably the most difficult level as the enemies require precise jumping to clear successfully. The game has an annoying 'feature' in which the collectables don't register as collected which is always fun...
I was inspired to make this recording by Mamemeister, a youtuber who often streams and makes videos of 8 and 16 bit systems. If you've a passing interest in old systems and games, I highly recommend giving him a watch.
