LEGO Rock Raiders: Bazs Mod (2009) walkthrough (part 2 of 3: Levels 22–33)
updated
Compression Factor (aka Pr0 Map #1) is a replacement for Rocky Horror, consisting of a number of small, tightly-packed caverns. The objective is unchanged. The original Rock world texture has been replaced by a custom rock texture by Amauros. The Tunnel Transport is required to complete this map.
Gephyrophobia (meaning fear of bridges) is a replacement for Lake Of Fire, consisting of a long straight path through lava lakes with many caverns branching off the sides. The objective has been increased to 200 energy crystals.
Review:
Compression Factor: A decent level that's probably closer to what Rock Hard was originally intended to be than Rocky Horror. I probably spent too long trying to find a place to relocate too. Trying to mine across the lake ended up being a nuisance thanks to AI issues, as well as the super-fast landslides in several places there (see below for more on that). I liked the use of lasers needed to get there though.
Gephyrophobia: This one I personally enjoyed more. The wide variety of caves was fun to explore. I did feel there were a few too many crystals on the map, and went out of my way to not have enough crystals collected until I had explored every cave. I was sort of surprised the lava didn't erode more than it did, though I guess that explains the name of the map.
The height map was very abrupt, seemingly consisting of only two different heights; smoother terrain with more variety would've been nice.
There were originally some annoying super-fast landslides in this map as well, including one coming from a Recharge Seam, which can't be mined or reinforced. You may have seen this on a lot of maps I've played; this happens when there is a Fallin map (designating where and how frequently regular landslides will happen) but no FallinMultiplier property in the level's CFG code. I fixed this by adding one (copied from Air Raiders) and will do this from now on unless the level designer specifically says not to.
Lastly, there were supposed to be lava monsters on this map. However, for some reason, ALL of the emerge points were placed on solid rock, which monsters can't emerge from. There were even two placed on either side of a Recharge Seam, which could've been used as an infinite monster spawner. As I've said many times before: Please test your mods before publishing them. The creator did say this wasn't the final version... but then never did post any updates.

This map is a replacement for Driller Night!, consisting of a pre-built base and an unmined area across a short lava stream. No objective or level code was included. The original objectives for Driller Night! were disabled and debug keys were used to end the level after all energy crystals were collected. The Predug map has been edited to fix a broken hidden cavern.
Review: I have no idea why this is called what it is, as it doesn't have anything to do with Driller Night. All you need to do is build a Tunnel Scout and fly over the lava. If you use the original mission's script you don't even need to do that, since there's more than 5 energy crystals in the walls near your base. But it's clearly an unfinished map so whatever.

This map consists of many elevation changes and mostly-empty caverns, with a surprise at the south end. It may have been created to test elevation, Path maps, and Erosion maps. The map files have been edited to fix some awkward elevation and broken hidden caverns and remove some pre-erosion that ate the base immediately when starting. No objective or level code was included.
Review: I have no idea where this level came from or what the name means. I don't think it's a name I would have come up with but I don't know who would have. I can't really judge the level itself since it's clearly just a test map with no objective. The lava eroding through water is something I'd like to see in a more serious map however.

This map is a replacement for Rocky Horror, changing the entire level layout and greatly increasing the erosion speed. The map consists of a large valley that gradually fills with lava, with a number of safer caverns running alongside it. While the lava does not threaten your base, it will quickly block off areas you need to reach to win the mission. The level's objective is unchanged.
Though the map would normally use a Rock world texture like Rocky Horror, I replaced it with a custom lava texture by Amauros, as it looked more appropriately hellish. I would like to start using custom biomes more, as long as it doesn't affect people's perceptions of the actual maps too much.
Review: Aside from trying to build a Support Station in time at the beginning, I didn't find this mission to be super challenging; I have beaten it before though, so for a new player it would definitely be hard. Racing the erosion was still tense, especially in the upper lava path that led to the recharge seam (unfortunately that area ended up being pointless because the AI refused to recharge any energy crystals, which is out of the map maker's control – no idea what caused that).
The map is very large, and some of the space in the southeast part (where the lava chasm ends) felt too empty, but it was fun exploring the caverns in the middle and south parts. I'm never a fan of straight square caves, but I could ignore it in this case. The river was interesting, though unfortunately Rock Raiders being able to walk along walls in some places spoiled the challenge a bit. I enjoyed the laser puzzles in the north and south areas despite recharging not working – lasers really are fun to use, it's just how weak they are in the unmodded game that stinks, and I appreciate Manic Miners overhauling them. While I was probably overly-prepared for the final push with all those Transport Trucks, it was still an exciting ending to the mission, and I'd definitely like to see more maps do something like that with a sudden massive threat approaching right when you're about to win.
The level does have some odd terrain height issues, such as the lava climbing up hills while that one river bank in the center was flat with the lava. The weirdest one, however, was the end of the river near HQ - for some reason it wouldn't let me build a Docks right there.
I really enjoyed this map, and recommend it if you're looking for a challenge. Having the erosion threaten what you need for your goal rather than having to defend your base makes it less stressful than many other erosion-based levels, while still being difficult due to its speed. Just be careful setting up a base at the start.

The creator, level code, and objective for this map are unknown. The arrows in the lava make me think addictgamer made it (his level Karnanga had similar arrows) but it could've been anyone, even me. I had it saved on my computer, and it does not appear to be on any surviving RRU file servers. The map files were made in late 2010, the folder it was in was from early 2011, and the 7z file it was in was made in late 2012.
I ended up using default erosion speed code and just collected all crystals I could before using debug keys to end the level. Debug keys were also used to destroy some solid rock blocking an unused part of the map.
Review: I can't really review this knowing nothing about how it was intended to be played. I don't really like the layout, though it does at least require some creative building at the beginning. I assume the slug holes were meant to be a hazard, but with no NPL file or CFG code they don't work.

The map is replacement for Driller Night!, consisting of a number of caverns with some rock monsters and spiders to deal with. The level's objective is unchanged, though the player starts off with a Tool Store. Enabling the unused spiders is required for this level to work; I made them able to attack Rock Raiders as well, though it doesn't work great.
Review: It's a simple map, but it's cool to see one using spiders, even if they aren't finished. Good level design, but not exactly a nightmare like the name suggests. Some webs might've been cool, though I don't know if people even knew they still worked when this level was made.
Also, there are supposed to be power paths in the cave with the second Tool Store, but apparently the Path map doesn't work in hidden caverns. Thanks DDI.

This level is a mod for Baz's Mod, replacing its version of Hot Stuff. The map consists of a large grid of caverns, many of which contain eroding lava, and one of which is the titular secret treasury. The level's objective is unchanged from 200 crystals.
Review: This was a really fun level, probably my favorite so far in fact. Maybe just because it was made for Baz's Mod and came with all the other improvements from that. But even on its own, it had a lot of places to explore, a wide variety of caves, and some fun challenges without being too hard (even though it supposedly has a "nightmare" difficulty). You should probably play Baz's Mod before playing this, but I recommend that too since it's a good mod. I hope there are other levels made for it, though I don't remember any others right now.

The map is replacement for Rocky Horror, consisting of a vast maze of caverns and lava to traverse while blocking erosion and avoiding landslides, monsters, and slugs. The level's objective is to collect 160 crystals. A number of bugs in the map were fixed before playing, including random open caverns and an issue where energy crystals didn't spawn (thanks to bad PTL file editing - they basically control the logic of a level, it's complicated and weird).
Review: Holy shit this level is brutal. This ended up being the first time I really had to retry a level over and over. And that was after I had to fix a lot of problems it had like random open caverns and broken CryOre spawning. Not to mention that it kept crashing, even though so far OpenLRR has fixed most crashes in this game. Ignoring all that though... I really just did not enjoy it, it was so brutal trying to manage fast erosion, continuous landslides (apparently to encourage laser use, despite lasers sucking by default and all the recharge seams getting eroded into), and hoards of monsters, not to mention that long tunnel of hard rock on the east side. There were also a number of caverns on the south side of the map that would be very difficult to access and didn't have enough resources to make it worthwhile. I feel like this level would be more fun in Manic Miners, where the Tunnel Transport is much more automatic and lasers are more powerful, but here it was just tedious.
Remember folks, harder does not automatically mean more fun, regardless of what Dwarf Fortress players say.

The map is a sandbox map that replaces Explosive Action. No instructions or objectives were posted with the map, and it appears to have never had a topic. Debug keys were used to end the level with a win condition after collecting all energy crystals on the map. The Object List file had to be edited to fix some misnamed objects that were causing the level to crash.
Review: This map feels like it was just made to test Path map file editing (hence all the rubble and power paths), as well as energy crystal and recharge seams (the latter of which there are way too many of and Rock Raiders get confused when trying to recharge).
I honestly have no idea who made this or where it even came from, I found it in a ZIP file with a bunch of other old LRR-related files, apparently downloaded or zipped in early 2013. If you've seen this map before please let me know; it was made after RRU moved from Zetaboards to its current site, so this one could have been posted somewhere on there or in the Skype server.

Alone and Water Park are original maps, numbered to replace The Path To Power and Driller NIght! respectively. Alone has a long series of pathways a Rock Raider is intended to travel through to find a lost HQ, with an objective of 200 crystals. Water Park is a sandbox level containing large lake with islands the player is meant to explore.
However, Water Park is impossible to complete, as there are not enough resources on the starting island; debug keys were used to mine out the entire level, which was then quit. Additionally, a custom NPL file was used to complete Alone, and the placement of some Rock Raiders that had been in solid rock was fixed.
Review: Neither of these maps feel finished. Water Park especially is impossible to do anything in, and doesn't even have a CryOre map. Alone also is easy to complete by simply building a Tool Store and blasting through the nearby hard rock. Both maps have some good ideas, I like the concept of Alone especially, though the game's AI might have made Water Park hard.
These are the final surviving maps from the original Zetaboards version of Rock Raiders United. 23 other maps are currently still lost.

The map was intended to have an objective of 45 crystals. However, it does not have 45 crystals in it, and did not have any NERPs file. Since the Rock Raiders could not climb the walls around the water in this map (despite them being able to do so every time I don't want them to?) I used OpenLRR's cheats to move the Tool Store across the water. The level was quit after all possible crystals were collected.
Review: I can't really review this map since it's clearly unfinished. A finished version was made, but it is lost due to Cyrem deleting all the old RRU Zetaboards uploads without backing them up to his new server. Did I mention 23 out of at least 44 (known) maps from there are currently lost? It would've been all but six he had determined elite enough to move over (three of which were his, of course) had I not made a topic about it. Sadly I lost data from the computer I used at the time and wasn't as careful about saving things back then anyway, otherwise maybe at least some more of these maps might still exist.

The map is replacement for Driller Night. The map consists of a maze of loose rock that a single Rock Raider must drill through. The objective has been lowered to only 1 crystal.
Review: Fuck this level oh my god. I guess the map is fine, aside from it having some rock way too close to the edge, but man did it piss me off. Couldn't it at least have been dirt instead of loose rock, or have had a few more caverns?

The map is a replacement for Back To Basics. No instructions or objectives were posted with the map, so the objective is left unchanged from the level it replaced. The level's oxygen rate was cut to 10% of its default value (30) because it was way too hard to complete otherwise. Debug keys had to be used to complete the level, as one of the crystal caches did not spawn due to a bug in the game. After completing it, I played through an edited version of it I made that made the lava lake hidden and fixed the crystal cache.
This map was originally the first in a series of three maps, but the other two are currently lost due to Cyrem deleting RRU's original file database without moving all the files to its replacement. Thanks.
Review: It feels a little unfinished. Right away, a huge amount of walls collapse due to being too thin, opening up a way to complete the level without exploring the southern tunnels – except then half of the map's crystals don't spawn due to more walls collapsing than the game can handle. I wasn't sure what the intended way to complete the map was, but I assumed the lava cave was supposed to be hidden. The area in the northwest also feels pointless.
One thing to always remember about Rock Raiders (and Manic Miners) is that walls of rock smaller than 2x2 will always collapse unless there is a hidden cavern on the other side of them.
But again, these are all old maps back when modding was new, and they're 13 years old now, so whatever.

The map is a sandbox map with no objective. Debug keys were used to end the level with a win condition after collecting all energy crystals on the map.
Review: This map was a lot smaller than Lake Emire, and also felt a bit disappointing in comparison. The water wasn't as big a part of the map as the title made me think it would be, and the crystal cache at the south end was less interesting than the island in Emire.

The level is a large sandbox map with no objective. Debug keys were used to end the level with a win condition after collecting all energy crystals on the map.
Review: I like the lake setting, though the caverns surrounding it could have used more variety. The island in the middle would've been cooler if it were required to complete an objective of some kind. However, it was made by the same person responsible for many of these old maps being lost and for fostering a bad community, so points off for that.

The map is a replacement for Rocky Horror that is much smaller than the original map. The objective is unchanged.
Review: Building a Support Station in time was tense, but after that the map was pretty peaceful and short (especially after Matt's Water Works). It's not a bad map, but it doesn't feel like it has anything in common with the original Rocky Horror. I did like the scattered columns of rock filling the main cave.

These three maps are edits of Split Down The Middle, Frozen Frenzy, and Water Works. Split Down The Middle has been heavily altered to have different routes, while most of the other two maps have been completely replaced with new maze-like levels. The objective for Water Works has been increased to 100 crystals, while the other two maps' objectives are unchanged.
Review: Each map will be reviewed separately.
• New Split Down the Middle: A fun edit of the original map, with plenty of new tunnels to explore. The long tunnels on the north side could've been replaced with more short tunnels, and I didn't like how the left team was unable to access the base until the right team opened the way, rather than both teams converging at the end like in the original. Overall, short but sweet.
• Totally New Frozen Frenzy: A mostly-new map replacing all caves (except for the final one) with a maze of tunnels. Unlike the first map, this was more of a puzzle, involving use of Tunnel Scouts to open up tunnels for the Chrome Crusher. I enjoyed it, though it did get a little repetitive feeling near the end, with all the doubling-back around lakes; more unique-looking caverns might've helped. The lack of ice monsters was disappointing, but expected with older maps. Also this map was apparently inspired by LordZakida's Level 7 map, which I can see.
• New Water Works: I think Matt really liked maze maps. Unfortunately, this one was too much for me. Having to drill hard rock along the water tunnel with the Small Digger was already a little annoying, but the maze of hard rock in the east half became super tedious. This map was intended to be "very hard", but it felt more like an endurance test by the end. Sorry. (Also not the map's fault, but for some reason my framerate went to shit when I disabled collecting crystals, then went back to normal instantly when I enabled it again.)

By the way, if anyone is wondering, the names I gave my Rock Raiders are all early names for the LRR characters. Tanya, Boris, Jan, Mike, and Rufus were the real/original names of Jet, Docs, Bandit, Axle, and Sparks; Roxy was an early name/callsign for Jet; and Boulder and Hill Billy were the main characters of a cancelled Rock Raiders television special.

The map is a modification of The Path To Power that adds new caverns and fills many of the original caverns with hard rock. The objective is unchanged. Mission objectives were disabled (No NERPs) to prevent the level from ending after building the Power Station.
I don't know who created this map or where I got it from. If it had a topic, it's apparently been hidden. If anyone remembers this map and who might have made it (or if you made it) please let me know.
Review: This is one of those maps where you have to double back through other caverns just to open up a cave next to your base. While I assume you're supposed to build Tool Stores across the water to blow up the hard rock, Rock Raiders can just walk on the walls next to the water, making it significantly easier to complete. If I hadn't been able to essentially ignore the water it would've been a lot more annoying and sluggish to blast through all that hard rock. Having to disable mission objectives is also an issue, but since this map was made before NERPs was understood I can overlook that.
Short version: It was not a map of doom.

I didn't like that all of the existing videos of this game either play only as Pepper or play only an assortment of minigames, so for the game's 25th birthday here is one that covers as much of the game as possible, and playing the game as it was meant to be played – not as a game to be completed, but more as a toy to mess around in. The entire score cube is filled with red, a lot of time is spent roaming the island and experiencing things, and both endings for the Brickster chase are shown. Even with this video ending up over 8 hours long, I still missed a whole bunch of dialogue no matter how much I tried – that's how extensive this game is.
With Pepper, I tried showing yellow, blue, and red bricks for the car and jetski races (I wanted to with the tow truck and hospital minigames as well, but figured it would take too long since they have very lenient times). With the other characters, I (tried to) get red bricks in every minigame, except the pizza delivery ones, where I continued to get the three possible endings for each. After completing the score cube, the Brickster was released.
Most videos also show version 1.1, so I decided to use the original release for this. Version 1.0 has a few differences from the more common version 1.1, including slightly different building mechanics and a few minor lines present in one version and not the other. You can read more here: legoisland.org/wiki/index.php/LEGO_Island_Versions
I know it's probably not much, especially for such a major date, but I hope it's something at least. I don't really know how else to celebrate a game, and while Rock Raiders is always my favorite, this game is truly special. I honestly don't think there has ever really been a game like it again unfortunately. The amount of care and effort that went into this game is staggering, and the way Mindscape treated its creators and destroyed any future games like it is awful.
Sorry I haven't finished the subtitles. This ended up being longer and taking longer than I expected. I'll keep working on it and update with a comment when it's finished. Currently up through 3:00:00.

The map is a modification of Search 'n' Rescue that adds many new tunnels and forces the player to travel across water and mine their way back to open up new routes. The objective is unchanged.
Review: I'm not a big fan of levels like this that force you to double back a lot, but I enjoyed this one. I'm not sure if the Tunnel Transport was intended when this was made, but it was easier than using a Tunnel Scout or Cargo Carriers, and I have it set to a slow movement speed anyway. The monsters were a nice surprise, one I wasn't prepared for. I did not like the parts where I had to squeeze a vehicle between two corners however – I don't think the game intends for this to be possible.

The map is a modification of Ice Spy that replaces most of the layout, though keeping the object placement the same. The level requires the player to travel across water and avoid Ice Monsters.
The level was supposed to have lava, but due to a bug with the map editor tool at the time it was not saved. An updated version was made, but that version of this map was lost after the then-owner of the RRU site deleted all the past site uploads without backing most of them up while creating a new upload system. Seriously.
I attempted to recreate the updated version based on descriptions, however it messed up and would not spawn all of the energy crystals in the walls that it should have.
Review: More original than many other early custom levels, but another one that obviously wasn't tested before it was published. The use of monster layout from Ice Spy was creative, though the lack of one of the two things in the level name was disappointing. Not great... but then again, the updated version might've been better, but now we'll never know.

The map is an edit of the level Rocky Horror. The layout of the level is expanded on to add more caverns and more energy crystals. The objective of the level is unchanged.
Mission objectives were disabled (No NERPs) to prevent the level from ending after collecting 50 energy crystals.
The game actually crashed twice near the end of the level, but fortunately I was able to keep playing each time thanks to OpenLRR. Unfortunately the third crash was fatal and didn't give an error message, but it was basically the end of the level, and it was my fault for being greedy. The only thing left to do was to re-enable NERPs and get the (unchanged) ending. I decided to keep this recording because of this, and because I did NOT want to replay this level.
Review: This level is way too big, and due to the resulting crashing was probably impossible to play before OpenLRR. Otherwise, it's just a bigger Rocky Horror. It would have been nice to have more monsters and an edited mission objective, if that had been possible back then.

The map is an edit of the level Driller Night. The layout of the level is altered to make it a "Run The Gauntlet-style Driller Night". The objective of the level is unchanged.
The original map file for the level contained a tunnel right at the edge of the map, which the game does not allow, making the level impossible and leading me to believe addict did not test his maps before posting them. I used AlcomIsst's map expansion tool to fix this.
Review: See above. It's hard to overlook posting an impossible level - even Baz's Mod had two levels that couldn't be completed in its first version. Please always test things before posting them. As for the map itself, most of the interesting area is the starting cavern, while the rest of the map is just long straight tunnels.

These four maps are edits of Driller Night!, The Path To Power, Explosive Action, and Breathless. The basic layout of the maps is unchanged, but many new caverns have been added to each one. The objectives are unchanged.
Review: Many of the new caverns feel tacked on, and if you're just trying to complete the level then there isn't much reason to explore them. In a way, however, this feels like a proto- Baz's Mod. The levels are alright for being some of the earliest ones made, and I don't think anyone knew how to change mission objectives back then.

The map is an edit of the level Breathless. The layout of the level is heavily altered, replacing all of it with a large underground lake with five islands. The objective of the level is unchanged.
This level is, as far as I can tell, the first custom level ever made for the game. It was initially lost, but I apparently reconstructed it from screenshots in 2013 somehow - I don't remember doing this, so I'm not sure if the original had any differences.
Review: The map is very square, and has no height map alterations. The level also causes the island AI issues the game frequently has. It's not the best custom map, but it's hard to judge it when it was the very first one. I don't think the map editors at the time could even edit the height map at the time.

European (PAL) PlayStation version: youtu.be/Z2pNpgFpRJg
Windows PC version: youtu.be/2jQ93-cdJeY
Gold medals are achieved in all 24 levels.
In total: 175 green energy crystals, 38 red energy crystals, and 25 lost Rock Raiders were collected in one-player mode; and 56 green energy crystals, 12 red energy crystals, and 17 lost Rock Raiders were collected in two-player mode (231 green crystals, 50 red crystals, and 42 Rock Raiders total).
Most of the two player levels were done by immediately teleporting the second player out and completing it with just player one. However, for Crystal Islands I ended up controlling both players. The level is not impossible with one player like Hop To It! was, but it would be tedious.
This version of the game is notably different from the Windows version. It was originally supposed to be a port, but LEGO Media decided that a real-time strategy game would not sell well on PlayStation, and made Data Design Interactive redo the entire game in only six months (hence its low quality). The game was also initially rejected by Sony of America, leading to the North American version having several more months of development, including entirely new levels by Gameworld Seven Ltd.
The files from the PAL version of the game are dated August 1999, while the files from the NTSC version's are dated February 2000.
Emulated using DuckStation. Internal Resolution set to 3x; Aspect Ratio set to PAR 1:1; Crop set to All Borders; True Color Rendering and Geometry/Culling/Texture Correction enabled.
Recorded at 1152x720 resolution (game originally 384x240), 60fps. This video has been upscaled to 1080p to improve the quality due to Youtube's terrible compression (please Youtube use higher bitrates for videos).

North American (NTSC-U/C) PlayStation version: youtu.be/8gMpisv-FSE

Gold medals are achieved in all 39 levels.

Most of the two player levels were done by immediately teleporting the second player out and completing it with just player one. However, Hop To It! was impossible to complete with only one player, so I had to control both for just that level.

Some differences from the final games:
0:13 Landslide notification is in all caps
0:15 Water tool tip is in all caps, box is grey instead of green
0:22 Footage from an earlier build of the game with later-removed notifications for something to do with dynamite and possibly crystals being used for power, as well as a button for the encyclopedia/help window (that may have never been functional). Also looks like a lava-themed Back to Basics kinda.
0:26 some sort of building-stud related notification?
0:31 Rock Raiders still use Sparks's face at this point in the game, Tunnel Scout may have slightly different textures too. There seems to be a notification with the same icon as the information panel button as well. I think this is Lava Laughter?
0:35 everyone in this cutscene (Waterfal.AVI) is Docs with Axle's helmet - I think the PlayStation Magazine trailer was like this too.
0:40 Landing Pad texture only displaying on one of the four blocks it's supposed to cover
0:43 Scorpion sprites displaying as their default grey (the real sprites are like this, and in the final game are colored either purple or green for the different types of Scorpion). Also I'm pretty sure this level is Express Delivery, which in the final game is an ice level and full of ice monsters instead of rock monsters.
0:50 Loader Dozer appears in its fully upgraded form from the Windows game - it did in many prototype PlayStation screenshots, but the entire spoiler was removed in the final game. Also some weird textures for corner rock.

Unfortunately this game was animated by a Danish studio and not the same Russian one that animated the Zelda CDi games, otherwise this would be perfect.
(And yet despite this being the only LEGO commercial from said demo disc that doesn't use stock music, it still got hit with a baseless copyright claim lmao.)

In the easy mode of this game, treasures floating by in the diving minigame float by much more frequently, and your oxygen runs out slower. In the laberynth, the entire map is lit up rather than only showing you the area close to you. In the climbing minigame your water runs out much slower, and rocks fall slower as well (the birds move at the same speed however). The four-across minigame seems to be the same, maybe the Minotaur's AI is easier but I couldn't tell.

In the easy mode of this game, there are no extra scarab beetles, the scarabs move slower and take longer to dislodge themselves out of the wall, snakes are slower and less aggressive, and you're required to catch less of them.
For some reason, you can "catch" the golden snake simply by filling up your meter of normal red snakes - presumably doing so is meant to drop of the golden snake, but instead it wins the game. Likewise you can catch the golden snake before you've filled your snake meter if you lose enough from being bitten, as happened to me in this video.
