FLATBURN is an open-source, low-cost, solar-powered sensing platform designed to monitor urban air quality and heat levels. Air pollution and heat are serious health risks on the rise due to environmental degradation and climate change. Unfortunately, many communities lack the necessary data to address these issues effectively. FLATBURN seeks to fill this gap by providing easy-to-deploy sensors that can attach to public or personal vehicles, gathering hyperlocal data critical for understanding and managing these challenges.
With its open-source design, FLATBURN allows citizen scientists to customize the data they collect, putting the power of information into the hands of communities. This low-cost, high-impact solution offers a practical and scalable way to address environmental issues.
Roboat – a research project by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and AMS Institute – successfully developed autonomy for two full - scale prototypes . After five years of R&D, the project is ready for next step s towards pilots and commercialization.
Starting November 2021, the project will continue developing three use cases: passenger transport , logistics (waste collection) and surveying water infrastructure and monitoring water quality .

Understanding the patterns underlying human mobility in urban areas is essential to better plan cities, engineering traffic, and mitigating diseases. However, existing studies have characterized only some spatial features of mobility — such as travel distance — overlooking an important temporal feature: how frequently do we visit a particular place? And, how is this visitation frequency related to the distance we traveled? Modeling the interplay between the spatial and temporal features of mobility is critical; for instance, it can provide urban planners with the information to best place a shopping mall to attract customers.
This webinar will walk the audience through the discovery, based on the analysis of over 8 billion human mobility traces collected over four continents. The results display that humans have a natural tendency of trading off travel distance with frequency: the further we travel, the less frequently we do it, according to a “visitation law” that can be described through a simple mathematical law. We will then show how this striking discovery can be used to better locate businesses and facilities in urban spaces and find effective containment strategies for disease spreading.

The number of visitors to any location decreases as the inverse square of the product of their visiting frequency and travel distance. This discovery can be used to fully reproduce real-world mobility data, better locate businesses and facilities in urban spaces and find effective containment strategies for disease spreading.

Currently, private cars occupy a parking spot at every destination. However, the scenario will change when shared self-driving cars are put to more productive use after finishing any particular trip. As much as 86% of current parking spaces are freed up or repurposed if a complete switch occurs from private cars to shared mobility.

21st-century people's communication patterns have become increasingly reliant on digital tools, a fact made especially apparent by the contemporary conditions of social distancing and quarantining. Our researchers are investigating how the physical and digital layers within work or universities' environments impact people's aggregation and interaction in order to stimulate innovation and the creation of new knowledge. How many vehicles would be required to adequately scan a city? In this project, we show that the sensing power of taxi fleets is unexpectedly large. Just 10 taxis typically cover one-third of Manhattan’s streets in one day—and the sensing power of taxis is very similar across cities around the world.

The Senseable City Lab and Ericsson have embarked on a journey inside an unprecedented communications network data set including networks from different parts of the world. Our leading project aims at exploring the spatio-temporal voice, sms and data traffic in major cities from various continents. We investigate questions such as: Can we find repeating dynamical patterns?
How are these patterns affected by specific events? Can we differentiate specific spatial areas with their activity patterns? Which are the similarities and difference between major cities in different parts of the world?
Preliminary results suggest that while a city global signature is mainly based on its cultural background (same-country cities' signatures being more alike), all major cities share a same partitioning in spatial areas with specific patterns.
As the partnership between Ericsson and MIT continues, research will delve more deeply into these questions, thus fostering our understanding of how the pulses of cities around the world interact to shape a single signal, the signature of humanity.

This approach based on slot-based intersections is flexible and can be designed to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle crossing with vehicular traffic.
The model provides a performance breakthrough: all safety requirements being equal, traffic efficiency is doubled with respect to current state-of-the-art traffic lights. With today's traffic volumes, queues would vanish and travel delays would be cut to almost zero.
