Each of the triplet patterns below use alternating sticking and begin with the right stick (left stick if you’re using a left-handed setup). Going down the toms, tonally, allows the right stick to lead the transitions. However, when you’re going back up the toms, the sticks can get crossed. Be sure to move the left stick out of the way in order to avoid a trip-up.

Each of the fills below share a basic, accented sixteenth-note pattern. Accents are played every third sixteenth note. In fills 1 through 3, the accents begin on beat 1. Fills 4 through 6 begin the accent pattern on the "&" of beat 1.

DESCRIPTION: Learn to play the tom groove used in the pre-chorus of Castle on the Hill and experiment with 3 levels of dynamics: accented strokes, regular strokes and marcatos.
DRUM SHEET MUSIC STORE: onlinedrummer.com/collections/drum-sheet-music
DESCRIPTION: Because triplets are phrased in threes (as the name "triplet" implies), playing them in groups of two creates a syncopated feel. In the example grooves, the toms change every two strokes (i.e. groups of two) within the triplets. All of the examples use a high tom, middle tom and low tom pattern but experiment with introducing new patterns to create new sounds.

This lesson explores four drum fill ideas that feature the crash and bass to accent the Es. Number 1 demonstrates a full-measure application of the concept while the rest of the fills present partial-measure ideas. The slashes in the notation indicate to play time. Or, in other words, play any drum groove for those beats.

This lesson focuses on a few short fill ideas. Short fills generally take up a half measure or less, hence the name.
