When Karen's husband suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at home, she found herself facing every family's worst nightmare.
But Karen didn't hesitate and jumped into action. She was able to stay calm, act quickly, and give her husband the best possible chance of survival until emergency services arrived.
Today, Rodney is alive thanks to her actions. Karen doesn’t see herself as a hero, but her husband certainly does.
We're proud to recognise Karen as our overall First Aid Champion for 2026, celebrating not only her courage and determination, but the incredible difference that first aid skills can make.
Karen's story is a great reminder that first aid saves lives, and that the person who makes the difference could be you.

Congratulations to Robyn on receiving her Service Bar and a commendation for her vital work during the 2022 floods.
From supporting evacuees in their most difficult moments to championing care behind the scenes, Robyn truly represents the heart of St John. As she says, it’s often the “tiny little bits behind the scenes” that make the biggest difference, and we’re so proud to have her as part of the St John family.
Thank you, Robyn, for everything you do 👏
Lil’s journey with St John has taken her from learning first aid to leading others and supporting patients at major events.
Her message? “Give it a go; you’ll be surprised how much you like it.”
Think: CPR, general first aid, or even special first aid for babies and kids aid, available in a range of metro and regional locations (plus some online). Easy to fit in, actually useful IRL, and the kind of skill you hope you never need…but will be glad you have 🚑👶🙌
Ten years on, she’s proud to help build a safe, inclusive space while supporting her local community every step of the way.
✨ “Do it. You won’t regret it.”

Seven months later, they met again for the first time.
Hugs. Tears. Gratitude.
“I wouldn’t be here without them,” Lewis said. “They gave me a second chance.”
