Therion - Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas Review : The HM Album Club Dissects Heavy Metallurgy 2024-02-15 | If you can rely on anything, the fact that change can and will happen is a guarantee. Whether its in life or art, evolution is a constant. With music, some go out of their way to remain grounded in a predetermined style and carry that unwavering focus and dedication onward until their last recorded note. With bands like Sweden's Therion, who arose out of obtuse, yet period/geography correct death metal, change became a very important element to their creativity and songwriting style. Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas is very much a transitional album in Therion's long musical career. Love it or hate it, there is no denying a sense of freedom within these songs. New ideas. Clinging to minor death metal elements, while reaching deep into gothic, or Middle Eastern atmospheres and modes. It was a statement type of album that tried to show the fans that there was more to them than their juvenile selves trying to reconstruct Napalm Death and Entombed riffs. Whether or not you like this, or what the band became afterwards is irrelevant. What we have here is an album that is often overlooked, yet at the time was pushing boundaries that none of us maybe realized needed pushing. It's all about freedom. Sumerlands - Sumerlands Review :: The Heavy Metallurgy Album Club Dissects Heavy Metallurgy 2024-02-01 | Sumerlands is a metal union of musicians that have clocked in the hours and done time in other bands such as Dream Unending, Magic Circle and Eternal Champion among countless others. Needless to say, with their pedigree clearly in check, their steel is indeed true. With sonic influences that run the gamut of traditional hard rock and metal bands, the clear standout is the era of Ozzy Osbourne when guitarist Jake E. Lee was in charge of songwriting. Sumerlands isn't a direct reproduction of course, but those palm muted, full chords and vibrant melodies sends a sonic salute to albums like Bark At the Moon and he Ultimate Sin. With Longing for Death/Todessehnsucht, the bands 2nd album, Atrocity refined their technical death metal approach by nurturing the complex side of their sound while attempting to introduce more of a "sane" songwriting structure. This more palatable platform empowered the memorability of the album, yet it's a release that is rarely mentioned when people talk about classic death metal albums. Why didn't this band really take off? Too tech? Too far removed from a blossoming Florida scene? Motorhead - Another Perfect Day Review :: The Heavy Metallurgy Album Club Dissects Heavy Metallurgy 2023-11-23 | "We are Motorhead and we play Rock n' Roll" was the introduction so frequently proclaimed by Lemmy Kilmister before Motorhead would deafen and cleave the heads off of thousands of willing onlookers at the start of a concert. And the truth is, other than the debut album, Another Perfect Day is perhaps the most pure "Rock N' Roll" Motorhead ever achieved. Fast Eddie Clark was out, ending what many consider the classic era of Motorhead, but Lemmy and Phil Taylor were quick to enlist the talents of former Thin Lizzy axeman, Brian "Robbo" Robertson. The result of this union is the 1 and done classic, Another Perfect Day. The stylistic forces of Thin Lizzy and Motorhead sit alongside each other amazingly well. The end result? A more classy, melodic and emotive Motorhead, all the while retaining the unique characteristics of all the musicians involved. It's a loved, hated, misunderstood and often overlooked album and the Metallurgists are prepared to dive deep into this gem from 1983. Join us!
