Saramonic MixMic XLR audio adapter review - DSLR FILM NOOB onelonedork 2016-07-31 | http://amzn.to/2amA8xG There are a ton of XLR audio adapters for DSLR cameras on the market, but over the last 5 or 6 years there hasn't really been a lot of innovation. All of them basically boil down to a square box that sits under your camera with 2 or 3 XLR inputs. The MixMic is actually one of the first really interesting XLR audio adapters I've seen for the DSLR Market. If you've used older ENG and documentary-style cameras, the Mixmic design and layout should look very familiar to you. Saramonic has basically taken the concept of a top mount XLR audio adapter with boom mic cradle and applied the design concept to a DSLR adaptable package. At a price of $299, the MixMic offers up audio quality that is as good as any Beachtek XLR adapter, and very close to the quality of a Juiced link device. At that very reasonable price, Saramonic also includes a mini boom mic that sounds (to my ears) almost identical to the Sony microphone included in the $700+ Sony K1M-XLR audio adapter (found here: http://amzn.to/2adSg75).For any DSLR shooter looking for an alternative to under camera XLR audio adapter boxes, the Mixmic is an extremely good value. If you are a sony shooter, this is a much more affordable alternative to the K1M-XLR and you aren't locked in to a single camera system. While it isn't extremally bright, there is a great sun hood, and it is feature packed for the price. On the downside, there is a little bit of lag which can be a bit annoying when you are making camera moves with your face in the hood. Overall Great Monitor for the price. MustHD has been around for a number of years and has always been know for there built in sun hoods, remote control, and adaptable battery features. That said, the M702H is pretty much what you'd expect from MustHD. A very nice looking 1920x1200 IPS display, built in screen protector/sun shade, locking HDMI ports, and interchangeable battery plate. Canon 5d mark IV First impressions - DSLR FILM NOOB onelonedork 2016-09-11 | http://amzn.to/2cfOprp I've been playing around with the Canon 5d mark IV for a couple of days now and I'm currently on the fence about this guy. The camera feels a bit more plastic than the 5d mark III. So far, I'm on the fence. From a photographer perspective, Canon has improved a lot. Autofocus is very nice and snappy, image quality is great, and the touchscreen is surprisingly useful. Dynamic range has been improved but moire has gotten worse. The camera feels a little lighter and somewhat cheaper than 5d mark III and the wifi features seem to be a little iffy.As far as video is concerned, the 5dmkIV doesn't feel like a huge improvement to the 5d mark III. 4k Video is a nice upgrade but the 500mbps Mjpeg codec is data hungry, eating up around 4GB a min or so. The touch screen is a good update and the focus system in video mode is very handy. That said, the lack of audio interface adapter is very frustrating. Canon gave us the funky port on the front of the camera, and they've released an audio adapter for the XC-15, it really would have been great if that was an option on the 5dmkIV.I will continue to update the review as I spend more time with it, currently, I'm giving this 4 stars, but I'll update this as I continue to spend time with it.

Yi 4k action cam vs hero 4 black Image stabilization onelonedork 2016-07-18 | http://amzn.to/2alPIoD Here is another quick test with the Yi 4k action camera. This time, I'm taking a look at Image stabilization. You are limited to 1080p and a max of 60 FPS when using IS, but it does a very impressive job. Watching footage from the hero 4 black edition and the Yi 4k action cam, it's night and day. The IS doesn't take care of everything, but it eliminates around 90% of the shake. Image quality so far has also been impressive. YI 4K Action Camera first impressions and Hero 4 Comparison. onelonedork 2016-07-13 | http://amzn.to/29AvBBh I just received the Yi 4k action cam from my pre-order a few months ago. There was no tracking or now shipping information, it simply showed up. The camera feels well made and the battery is noticeably larger than my hero 4 black edition. The touch screen is very easy to use and very responsive and controls in general are easier to use than a hero 4. Build quality is in the same category as the hero 4 so if you plan on taking it into extreme weather or water, you'll need a case. I'm still on the fence about image quality. My first impressions are:The field of view isn't as wide as my hero 4 backSize is almost IdenticalScreen on the back of the Yi is beautifulAudio is good, but the USB audio option on the hero is betterVideo quality is similar though hero 4 has more contrastI'll post more as I get a chance to test these two cameras out. The hero 4 is getting a run for the money with the Yi 4k action camera, but there are a few trade offs.

It's a powered on-camera mic that gives you the option to record in Stereo or mono depending on the situation. On top of that, it fits in ruffly the same form factor as a Rode video mic pro. I can only think of a handful of reasons to record in stereo, but it is extremely handy to be able to switch when those sorts of applications come up. Overall, at a price of $249, the SMX-30 is a pretty decent value for the price with lots of features and options that make it the Macgyver of on-camera microphones.
