For more info about Farnborough Air Sciences Trust visit: airsciences.org.uk1958 Man United Air Disaster - RAE Bedford Slush TrialsFAST Aviation Archive2024-05-09 | On 6 February 1958, 7 members of the Manchester United football team, known at the time as the “Busby Babes”, and 14 other passengers, were killed in an air crash in an airliner attempting to take-off at Munich airport. The Manchester United team was returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, against Red Star Belgrade, but had to make a stop in Munich for refuelling. Initially, the aircraft’s Captain was blamed for the crash, but research scientists at Bedford identified another possible hazard, slush on the runway. Research was conducted at the Royal Aircraft Establishment Bedford’s airfield at Thurleigh from 1962 to 1964 after RAE Bedford scientists suggested this alternative explanation for the accident. An aircraft of the same type as that involved in the crash, an Airspeed Ambassador, was tested extensively at RAE Bedford by taxying it at various speeds through specially created “slush ponds” on the runway. Several other types were also used in the tests. Using on-board instrumentation, and detailed analysis, it was established that slush of modest depth could have a significant effect on the aircraft’s ability to reach a safe flying speed. A major report was published by RAE and used by the accident investigators. The investigation by the West German authorities originally blamed the aircraft’s captain, Captain Thain, for the crash, claiming that he had failed to de-ice the wings of the aircraft, despite statements to the contrary from eyewitnesses. Thain's name was eventually cleared in 1968, ten years after the incident, as a result of the research undertaken at RAE.

The TSR-2 was designed around both conventional and nuclear weapons delivery: it was to penetrate well-defended frontline areas at low altitudes and very high speeds, and then attack high-value targets in rear areas. Another intended combat role was to provide high-altitude, high-speed stand-off, side-looking radar and photographic imagery and signals intelligence, aerial reconnaissance. Only one airframe flew and test flights and weight-rise during design indicated that the aircraft would be unable to meet its original design specifications, which were reduced as the result of flight testing.
The TSR-2 was the victim of ever-rising costs and inter-service squabbling over Britain's future defence needs, which together led to the controversial decision in 1965 to scrap the programme. It was decided to order an adapted version of the General Dynamics F-111 instead, but that decision was later rescinded as costs and development times increased. The replacements included the Blackburn Buccaneer and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, both of which had previously been considered and rejected early in the TSR-2 procurement process. Its first flight was on 6th November 1957 and is featured here at the 1959 SBAC show carrying a full passenger load of nurses. Although it was promising in concept, the programme was eventually cancelled in 1962 as it failed to attract any commercial orders.

Bumpy weather is a common cause, so RAF Coastal Command saw especially high incidence of this given that they usually flew at 1000ft where adverse weather conditions are more prevalent. Personnel flying in a troop carrying glider were almost certain to suffer from motion sickness. In the mid 1960`s the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine devised a training programme designed to desensitise aircrew in order to overcome this problem. The test rigs shown here are a bit `Heath Robinson` in their design, but the techniques are still used today in flight training.

He was in a Martin Baker Mark 3 fully automatic seat using a standard Irvin 24 ft canopy parachute. Had the aircraft been stationary, as well, it would have been a full 0/0 ejection.

Studies into cockpit layout by the RAF Institute of Aviation at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough led to the development of the science now known as Ergonomics. Scientists began focusing on designing aircraft with reference to human comfort.

Grumman Avenger, torpedo bomber, designed for the US Navy, landing on HMS Vengance with use of an arrestor hook. Grummaan Hellcat making an assisted take-off from HMS Trumpeter using tail down launching which became necessary with the influx of American aircraft. This was a towed method of launching. Also features the Vought Corsair, monoplane with canti-levered wings, and the Bell P-39 Airacobra which was unusual for its tricycle undercarriage.

The introduction of the steam catapult revolutionised the launch process. The aircraft featured include Sea Hawks. Following a refit in 1958, AR carried de Havilland Sea Vixens and Supermarine Scimitars from 1959. The Scimitar was the first aircraft in the Fleet Air Arm to be equipped with nuclear capability, and it served as a low-level tactical bomber. The Sea Vixen was faster than the old Sea Venom and had an all missile armament.
A second refit in 1967 introduced Phantoms, Gannets and Buccaneers into service on Ark Royal.

Includes low-light imaging; Infra-red; thermal imaging; night vision goggles; HUD; flight trials in a Hunter from the RAE test flight fleet; how the new technology was rapidly adapted for use in the Falklands conflict; development of a night vision system for use by helicopters; and work that continued into the 1990s which led to the most precise bomb targeting technology in the world at that time and was used by RAF Tornado squadrons during the Gulf War. Known as TILD, it was installed in Jaguars moving forward.

Initial trials done with dummies, then with live subjects at 10,000 ft with increasing air speeds. At 389 knots, both test subjects sustained injuries causing the trials to be suspended. Trials were resumed the following year after modifications were made to the seat system. Heights of 45,000ft and up to 425 knots were successfully achieved.

Largest Aircraft - Now Destroyed.FAST Aviation Archive2022-12-27 | Designed as a strategic airlift cargo aircraft by Antonov in the Soviet Union, the AN-225 Mriya, was the largest aircraft in the world in operational use. It was also the heaviest aircraft ever built and had the largest wingspan. It was developed during the 1980s, and only one was ever built to completion. Sadly this magnificent beast was destroyed in February 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is seen here in flight, take-off, landing, and inside the aircraft on display at the SBAC Farnborough Air Show in 1990.

Website: airsciences.org.ukHow the Lockerbie Crash Improved Airline Safety - in Memory of Those Who Lost Their Lives.FAST Aviation Archive2022-12-21 | 21st December 2022 marks the 34th anniversary of the Pan Am Lockerbie disaster. The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) investigated the crash, which included painstakingly reassembling as much of the wreckage as possible. Following this, the CAA and FAA called for research to be carried out to improve the baggage holds of passenger aircraft in future. This segment was filmed in 1990 at the AAIB, and the wreckage of the Pan Am aircraft can be seen here. It remained at the AAIB for over 10 years while the legal process continued. Also includes interview with Ken Smart, who was head of AAIB at the time; and controlled explosions carried out by DERA (formerly Royal Aircraft Establishment) which led to strengthened baggage holds designed to withstand the explosive force of a bombing should such an incident reoccur. This video is shared here in memory of the 270 people who lost their lives in the Lockerbie disaster on 21st December 1988.

Following the IIIA, B and C, the IIID entered service with the Fleet Air Arm in 1924 until it was replaced by the IIIF in 1930. The IIIF, and final version, was the most prolific and enduring. It was a 3-seat spotter/reconnaissance aircraft with a wooden fabric-covered fuselage, that proved very useful having both wheels and floats versions. The Fairey III family fist flew in 1917 and was retired in 1942, the IIIF version having served both the Fleet Air Arm and the RAF during WWI and WWII.Parnall Aircraft - Panther, Plover and PetoFAST Aviation Archive2022-12-17 | A trio of early bi-planes from the Parnall Aircraft Company. The Panther, a WWI aircraft, was one of the earliest reconnaissance aircraft, and it played a significant role in development of carrier operations. The Plover was a naval fighter of the 1920`s. Both are seen here doing deck trials. After extensive evaluation, of the Plover, the Flycatcher was preferred for large scale service and replaced it. The Peto was designed for use from submarines. airsciences.org.ukFairey Barracuda - Monoplane Torpedo Bomber WWIIFAST Aviation Archive2022-12-15 | The Barracuda was a British carrier-borne torpedo and dive bomber developed as a replacement for the Fairey Albacore bi-planes. It was the first of its type to be operated by the Fleet Air Arm and was fabricated entirely from metal. It first flew in 1940 and was introduced into service in 1943. It was also operated by the Royal Canadian Navy, Netherlands Naval Aviation Service and the French air Force. One of the Barracuda`s most noteworthy engagements during WWII was a large scale attack upon the German battleship Tirpitz in April 1944. It is seen here carrying out deck trials with assisted take-off and crash barrier trials - not always successful!
Website: airsciences.org.ukHawker Hunter - Transonic Ground Attack Fighter and TrainerFAST Aviation Archive2022-12-14 | The Hunter was the first jet powered Hawker aircraft to be procured by the RAF. Developed in the late 1940`s/early 1950`s, the single seat version was introduced in 1954 as an interceptor aircraft. During the 1960`s it transitioned to the roles of fighter-bomber and aerial reconnaissance. Two-seat variants were used for training and secondary roles with the RAF and Royal Navy until the 1990`s. The Hunter was widely exported serving 21 overseas air forces.
It is seen here fitted with rockets and air-to-air guided missiles. It is also at SBAC 1954 landing using reverse thrust, then later at SBAC 1960 a two seater version flown by test pilot, Bill Bedford. Final segments include flight trials at the RAE with electro-optics proving high-speed, low level night flying; and development of Active Control or `Fly by Wire.`

It`s name comes from the Aboriginal word meaning `Hunted One`. The Australian Government Aircraft Factories built 517 of these aircraft in 1952. Jindivik was used as a target drone for guided missile testing. The video features some of the testing carried out by the Royal Aircraft Establishment at its special test facility in Aberporth, Wales.
