"Dressing The Atlantic World: A Simple Hand-Sewn Petticoat, for work or play c. 1760-1785. A "petticoat" was the English name for a skirt in the 18th-century. This style of lower body garment was a colonizer fashion worn by women across cultures, races and economic contexts from Peru to the West Indies to Virginia to London.
This class uses detailed video instructions to walk you through how to stitch this style of skirt together. The class covers:
-how to choose materials -zero-waste cutting without a pattern -how to make pocket slits -sewing the seam with a "Mantua-makers hem" -pleating fabric by eye -attaching a simple waistband -sewing an entire garment without a sewing machine!
It is an excellent primer on making an entire garment with needle and thread and thinking about clothing construction without the use of a paper pattern. I have created it with beginners to advanced hand-sewists in mind. This skirt can be easily adapted to a modern wardrobe.
There are are several discounted opportunities for PGM (People of the Global Majority), Trans individuals and/or people with disabilities.

She studies and re-creates historical pieces from the 16th-century to the 20th century. She is a professional museum costumer, self-taught maker and published scholar. She has been in love with hand-sewing since she was a teenager but tendinitis in her wrist almost took her passion away. Today we chat about a very important topic: hand-sewing health. By adjusting her technique and balancing hand-sewing with machine work Samantha has successfully kept her hand-sewing injury at bay so she can keep creating. However, through her healing she realized that her self-worth was not wrapped up in her ability to make clothing. This topic is not frequently discussed openly but it is an issue many stitchers grapple with. Many makers associate their self-identity with their sewing output and are at risk to push through their pain in order to create. Or feel like a failure because they are in too much pain to sew. Samantha and I talk about why it is OK to take a break, that pain is real and taking care of yourself over producing is vital. Remember your health is more important than the clothing you make.
