EnCrypted Horror - narrated by Jasper LEstrange
The Diver by A.J. Alan | Vintage radio | An EnCrypted Special
updated
This original recording is an audio presentation (with sound effects and music) by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Mark of the Beast” by Rudyard Kipling (1890).
You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a future episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem. (Honest! Next one recorded and out very soon! I promise!) youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7JYpOrSDoCfvPbjBn6DZGIXDlK-eOzpR).
CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music because that’s what I enjoy making and what I personally like to listen to. I also try and do accents and different voices to differentiate between the characters as I think it makes for a more enjoyable listen. Lots of my listeners and subscribers agree. If you don’t, consider yourself lucky to be on a website that has hundreds and thousands of other storytellers to listen to. I choose stories based on my extensive reading of vintage horror, ghost, and weird stories, and based on my personal taste. If you don’t like this one, you might like the next one.

If you don’t, there are plenty of narrators who do none of these things and who will be delighted to make you acquaintance. One of the things I'm most proud of is the small but friendly community this channel has cultivated in which people are almost without exception polite, funny, insightful, informative, and respectful. So it stays that way, please keep your rude, condescending, unpleasant comments to yourself. Knobheads get yeeted. I operate a three strike rule that can change to no strikes without warning.

CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music because that’s what I enjoy making and what I personally like to listen to. If you don’t, good for you. Our differences in taste and opinion are what makes this world such a wonderful place and we are very fortunate to live at a time when our entertainment choices are almost without limit. I choose stories to narrate based on my personal taste. I don’t think every one of them is a masterpiece, but I find something to enjoy in all of them. They are usually early twentieth century. Sometimes you might find the language, attitudes, representations objectionable to your modern sensibilities. A wise man once said “The past is a foreign country…” It can certainly be nice to visit from time to time, not to mention illuminating.

YouTube is full of creators who will be delighted to hear from you. If you think I’ve mangled the language, failed to approximate an accent, or used substandard recording equipment, by all means let me know, but kindly provide details of your place of work so I may come and pick fault with something you’ve done. CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music…because that’s what I personally enjoy listening to and what I like to make. As you’ll see in the comments section, other people like it too. If you don’t, just consider how fortunate you are to live in a world that provides you with such rich variety and the opportunity to find something else to listen to that’s more to your taste. If you think the sound quality is bad, first check the equipment you are using for playback is in working order, then check your ears for wax. If it proves to be a fault at my end, please remember that I’m a hobbyist recording at home (and consider sending money so I might buy better equipment). If you don’t like the story, bear in mind I didn’t write it, but I did find something of interest in it. If you don’t understand the story, consider there’s a fair chance I didn’t either, but sometimes it’s good not to have all the answers.

CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music…because that’s what I like to make and listen to. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea or coffee, but luckily we exist in a world of almost limitless choice, so if it hurts your ears or makes you nauseous, feel free to move on to something else, no need to leave a comment. I try and do voices and accents to distinguish between characters as it can help the listener, but I’m not Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Wish I had her money though. I do a wide variety of mostly vintage (early 20th century) stories on this channel. Naturally, the stories reflect the attitudes and language of the time. They didn’t always know any better. But they did dress smarter and look good in hats. Sometimes pet animals die in these stories (though not in this one). When it happens, try not to weep, just hold your own pet animal a little more tightly. But not too tightly.

CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music…because that’s what I like to make and listen to. If you don’t personally like it you’re in luck. There are simply dozens and dozens of narrators who don’t do this. I do voices to help differentiate between characters and sometimes I change the pitch of my voice for female characters or children. You might not like it, but whenever I don’t do this, I’ve had complaints from listeners saying they can’t differentiate between characters. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I select stories that I like from my wide reading of vintage horror, supernatural and weird fiction. I don’t pretend that they are all masterpieces, but all, I believe, have something to recommend them. At least, I found something in them that resonated and which I thought was worth sharing.

CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. If that’s not your thing, seek out other creators on YouTube. They will be delighted to make your acquaintance. I also do character voices to differentiate between characters. If this is likely to disturb you, again look elsewhere. The stories I read are very old and sometimes contain attitudes and language you might find upsetting. They didn’t know any better, just as you don’t know what future generations will find objectionable about the things you say and do. Keep that in mind and enjoy instead a fascinating glimpse into a time gone by.

CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. If it’s not your personal cup of tea, consider yourself lucky to be on a website that offers hundreds (if not thousands) of other videos that will be more to your taste. If I read too fast did you know you can actually slow the playback down on YouTube? If I read too slow did you know you can actually speed me up? If you can’t read the subtitles against the thumbnail, did you know you can change them in YouTube by making them larger or putting a different colour behind them? In fact, they’ve thought of everything. I do accents and voices to help you differentiate between the characters. I like to add a bit of drama. I do it in the hope of providing a good listening experience, not because I’m “full of myself”. The stories I read are often quite old. Language changes, so do ideas. Try and see the humanity in them rather than mining them for perceived offences. That way unhappiness lies. Sometimes a dog dies (not in this story!) but no real dogs have ever been harmed in the creation of this podcast…to my knowledge.

As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. There are many narrators who don’t do this and they will be delighted to meet you. I try to do different voices just because I think it helps differentiate between characters when you’re listening. Apologies if I don’t nail every accent. You knew what I was going for, and at least I gave you a laugh. Apologies if I accidentally used a WW2 gun for my WW1 sound effects. Apologies if I said some of the Welsh things wrong. It’s hard, you know. The stories I read on this channel come from another time, many decades ago. If some of the ideas, beliefs, sentiments, and language upset you, try and forgive the authors…as you will expect to be forgiven by the people judging you ten years or less from now.

CREATOR’S NOTE:
These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it’s not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I’m sure they’ll be happy to meet you. I do accents and voices to help distinguish between characters, but please keep in mind that I’m not Michael Sheen or Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Sometimes when I voice a female character, I will raise the pitch of my voice. If this causes you distress, I am sorry…but imagine how confusing it would be if all my female characters sounded like the baritones in a male voice choir. These stories are recorded by a rank amateur using substandard equipment in a room with appalling acoustics. If this bothers you, please send money so I can buy better equipment and a new house. Also, I try and pronounce all words correctly, but mistakes can happen. Think of my errors and idiosyncrasies as a charming reminder that you are listening to an actual human who has tried to imbue his narration with personality and drama…and not a soulless AI-generated voice. Finally, the vintage stories I read may contain words you've never heard of and things that may offend your modern sensibilities. Luckily the smart device you're listening on also functions as the most complete reference book you could wish for, and your modern sensibilities may well have offended the author...so let's call it quits.
EDITORIAL NOTE:
I made a slight amend to the text because I believe there was a point in the original where it was unclear which character was speaking.

While I take care to my pronunciation is correct, I may make the occasional mistake. Your natural inclination will be to point this out in the comments, but please give some credit for all the words I pronounce perfectly! The older stories I read may contain “outdated attitudes” but, in their authors’ defence, they didn’t know what you would find offensive in the 21st century. Sometimes in these tales a pet animal dies but no real animals were killed in the writing or narrating of them.

NOTE: My recordings are intended to be an immersive experience featuring music and sound effects. If you don’t like these elements, there are plenty of narration channels that don’t have them and they’d love to hear from you. This is a hobby/side hustle. I’m an amateur at sound recording and production but I do my best to make something listenable. I do voices to differentiate between characters but I’m not a professional voice actor or narrator. Some of these stories are old and contain words and attitudes you might not like. They do not necessarily represent the views of…well…me. Sometimes a pet dog or cat will die. Horribly.

CONTENT ADVICE:
This channel aims to deliver an immersive experience somewhere between an audiobook and a radio drama. Music and sound effects may be used to enhance the reading as this is what I personally enjoy. If you don't like this, there are plenty of similar channels that don't do this and they'd love to meet you.
Similarly, I'm not a trained actor but I do try and do voices and accents to help listeners differentiate between characters. If it's an American character I'll do my best attempt at an American accent (rather than say a Birmingham, England "Brummie" accent). If this kind of thing annoys you, again look elsewhere.
Also, I am mostly choosing stories from a certain time period that I think have something to recommend them. They won't be to everyone's taste, and may contain...wait for it...values, ideas and language that were prevalent when the stories were written. They do not necessarily reflect the views of the management.
Finally, I'm an amateur doing this as a hobby with only a few hours a week to devote to it, not making much money from it, recording with the cheap equipment I've managed to scrape together in whatever less-than-ideal space I've found to record in, editing and mixing it in the idiosyncratic way that works for me, and trying to deliver something that I can stand to listen back to without cringing, which anyone is able to listen to for free if they wish (and which at least some people subscribing to this channel seem to enjoy). Something to bear in mind in case you thought I did this at Abbey Road with Trevor Horn twiddling the knobs.
Ta.

In the show I'll be sharing my thoughts on "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad" by M. R. James, thinking about the tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas, chuckling at the silly "real-life" ghost stories in Take A Break magazine, and finishing with a recitation of an old festive favourite.

2:05 "Oh Whistle..." story discussion
