Arndt Pechstein holds a PhD in neuroscience and has expert backgrounds in Biomimicry, Design Thinking, Agile, Exponential Organizations, and digital business models. As an initiator of the Hybrid Thinking approach, he coaches and consults on change & transformation strategies to help organizations in their digital and agile transition and toward innovative business models.
Giles Hutchins is a speaker, author, strategist, and coach. After 25 years in business, formerly as a management consultant, he now specializes in applying living systems logic to leadership and organizational development.
We asked both experts what their understanding of biomimicry is and what the implications of biomimicry are when applied to real life scenarios. We got an understanding of how they apply their own understandings of biomimicry to their own work and in helping others.
Highlighted often was the importance of using life systems thinking practically and effectively and not falling into the same trap of mechanistic thinking as we have so often in past iterations. It is key to commit wholly to applying the knowledge we get from nature and living systems and not merely using the basic thinking as another tool or best practice to have at our disposal.
Both experts spoke to the importance of using this moment of society wide change brought on and accelerated by COVID-19 to alter the way we approach problems and implement new and improved methods of thinking.

Hutchins developed an approach called 'Firm of the Future', which comprises of learning from living systems to help our organizations transform. Hutchins has also published 4 books on the related subject matter, dedicating his time to this field of expertise. He speaks to the immense challenges we are facing post-COVID. Despite the huge challenges, there is also a lot of scope and excitement for leaders as so much that we thought we knew about how to lead and operate is open for question.
Hutchins questions the mechanistic status quo on which much of business and practices are founded on and ask us to appreciate the interconnectivity of systems and the logic of life. Moving towards taking our inspiration from living systems, rather than mechanistic, machine-based thinking. He breaks down and explains the relevance of biomimicry today which real-life examples he has been involved with from across various industries. Hutchins breaks down regenerative leadership into 3 different levels on which we can apply biomimicry; Living Sytems Design, Living Systems Culture, and Living Systems Being.
The need for businesses and individuals to start taking insights and learning from living systems has been more and more apparent in recent times and Hutchins brilliantly articulates how best we can start to understand and apply the relevant principles needed for positive transformation.

Arndt speaks to the great uncertainty we all live in today and though uncertainty is rife, these times are also filled with excitement and potential. He goes into depth on the need to adopt a new way of thinking and stop constraining ourselves to our past understanding of systems and logic. To move from machine-based thinking to adaptive and resilient life systems thinking. This is at the core of biomimicry and its relevance and importance today.
Arndt believes we need visions of positive narratives for the future, of which there are three such narratives. The human collaborative, living systems, and exponential technologies. Crises always show the weaknesses and strengths of systems. The nature of the exposure of a strength or a weakness tends to lead to the acceleration of that strength and the desire to change and alter that weakness into a strength.
Pechstein tries to answer big questions such as, how can we build our systems in a much fairer and more sustainable way? How can we build our systems in a circular manner and not linear? How do we treat resources, people, and ecosystems more fairly?

TIpirneni discusses how much of the success of business partnerships comes down to trust and mutual interest that is built on long term relationships. These relationships can prompt potential partners to seek out effective ways of looking to work in collaboration. He speaks to how early-stage collaborations are often the most complex, because of this navigating these early stages effectively with a partner is a great marker on how well the collaboration will function in the future.
Tipirneni goes on to speak on what he believes categorizes 'true collaboration', contextualizing with examples from his own business. You need a diverse set of perspectives within the collaboration to optimize the long term chances of success.
He also gives key insights on what it means to be a CEO and the leader of a firm and what advice he has for younger aspiring leaders.

In this interview with JLL VP Yann Palmore he speaks to the importance of needing champions in companies who understand how to navigate the world of operational technology (OT). With a background in technology, he discovered the world of smart building technology. Palmore believes it is essential to look at sustainability and technology holistically. It is extremely unlikely there will be a silver bullet, one particular thing that solves the problem. We need to approach the relationship as an integrated design process.
The quality of the workplace, right down to the air quality and lighting can have an effect on the cognitive function of those working there. Palmore explains how although IT has long been understood and respected within the effective running of a business, OT is yet to get the respect it deserves. Looking to the future, Palmore believes data is key to drive the next several iterations of energy savings and improved wellness in the workspace.

In this interview with Bill Walsh, the Founder of The Healthy Building Network, he touches on the need to understand what goes into and makes up the products we use and the importance of moving towards environmental justice. Walsh notes that no industry uses more materials than the building industry. For this reason, the importance of using healthy materials in their production is paramount.
Walsh started out in the environmental movement for 15 years before moving into green building. It was when he saw the influence architects had that prompted his transition. Walsh speaks to the importance of understanding that a material is only healthy if it is healthy for everyone. That means it must be healthy when its being produced at site, used wherever and eventually disposed. Unfortunately, this is not the case in many examples and as a result the negative effects at the sites of production are disproportionately felt in lower income and usually minority areas are felt far more than for others. This is social inequity.
One way we can aim to ameliorate these imbalances is to demand to know what is in our products, for companies to screen for toxic materials and to move towards the blanket use of what Walsh defines as a healthy material and in doing so, aim for environmental justice.

George Bandy Jr’s fascinating journey to the Chief Sustainability Officer of Mohawk is certainly one worth hearing. From serving in Iraq to working at the University of Texas Houston, there are a whole plethora of factors that have likely shaped the man he is today. However, Bandy Jr owes his foundation in sustainability to his grandparents, noting that the first environmentalist he met was his grandmother. Bandy Jr highlights how attitudes to waste and environmental stewardship have radically changed in a matter of a generation or two. However, he has faith that we can restore and reinforce sustainable attitudes by re-framing the issue and contextualizing the solutions.
Generation Z are making decisions with their pocketbooks, he explains. They are more knowledgeable about sustainability and will raise the bar on expectations from companies. Although Bandy Jr is a stout optimist and has faith that today’s youth will fight to make a difference, he makes the point that change across the board can’t happen without diverse representation in positions of power and influence. Social inclusion on a large scale is necessary if this change is going to be sufficiently accelerated. This ties in with another key theme discussed, the social components of sustainability. Despite a lot of the environmental and sustainability issues we are facing in the built environment are nothing more than unintentional consequences of good design at that point in time, the consequences remain. Further to that point, these consequences are not distributed evenly on a social level. Toxic plant sites and waste grounds almost always tend to be in low income areas. Bandy Jr says that we need to own the responsibility of what happens socially to humans as a result and not solely on the environment itself.

In this interview, we hear how Dr Whitney Gray has applied her background in public health to the area of sustainability and in particular green building. Working for the International Well-Building Institute, Dr Gray has been exploring solutions to human mental and physical health problems created by the build environment. Dr Gray emphasizes how important using intelligent urban planning to prevent the issues from happening in the first place is always preferable to treating them once they have reared their head.
Gray discusses how the vilification of buildings in the wake of the OPEC oil crisis of the mid-seventies caused buildings to shrink and living spaces to become more cramped to save energy. This ultimately contributing to what we now describe as sick building syndrome. She explains how people can spend up to 90% of their time indoors and that our own health and well-being are inextricably linked to how we interact with these spaces.
When trying to win over stakeholders to more sustainable practices, Dr Gray stresses that you can’t take a one size fits all attitude. You can have extremely varied personalities, who can all have different attitudes and motivations. You need to fit the appropriate data to show that transforming your work space positively is a long-term investment into the health and well-being of your workforce. The employees are your key asset, with the amount of time spent indoors and the proven links between productivity, health and quality of workplace, it makes sense to invest in them both from a financial and ethical standpoint.

With a background working for the National Park Service and a master’s in architecture to boast, Ralph DiNola’s journey to the CEO of The New Building Institute seems perfectly fitting. In this interview, DiNola spoke to us about his green building goals, his desire to bring the building sector to zero carbon and net zero energy. DiNola emphasises just how much time we all spend indoors and what a profound effect this can have on various aspects of our lives. One area that he is particularly focused on is aiming to bring schools to net zero.
He speaks to the need to try and entirely remove fossil fuel’s roles in powering the built environment. One ultra-efficient alternative he discusses is the promise of heat-pump technology, he hopes that through the implementation of this technology we should hopefully be able to start entirely electrifying buildings. Furthermore, implementing more efficient technology into the buildings themselves, such as vacuum insulated glass and panels.
For DiNola one of the key focuses needs to be on providing the necessary resources for education. Mentorship is vital in facing these challenges collectively and enabling the leaders of the next generation to act effectively, armed with the knowledge to create and maintain sustainable built environments.

In this interview, Kevin Burke talks to us about the importance of having access to nature and the success of the Atlanta BeltLine.
Having worked on the extremely successful transformation of Fort Worth Park and having raised $33 million investment for the West Side Quarter trail, Burke explains the wide-ranging benefits that the Beltline and past projects have had on the city.
Burke started as a senior landscape artist and the more he became involved with his projects the stronger his passion for sustainability grew as he began to observe the tangible benefits the projects have on those who interacted with them. These range from enhanced mobility, access to nature, increased well-being and much more. The BeltLine not only provides excellent access for city residents, linking many neighborhoods that previously weren’t. It also has had a profound effect on local business around the city that have had increased exposure due to the trails.
Burke speaks about the positive effect of your mental health and well-being access to green spaces and nature has on people and wants to try and provide as much access to parks and green space as possible for the city residents. He finishes by stating that no person should have to walk over half a mile to a park.

Chris Shaffner is the Founder and CEO of the Green Engineer. In this interview Shaffner talks about the need to show people that there are many more benefits to moving towards higher efficiency energy practices beyond lower energy bills. Moving away from traditional sources of energy like natural gas can greatly enhance quality of life, is great from a sustainability standpoint and is a key step to safeguarding our future.
Schaffner argues that through integrated design we can effectively enact positive change whilst using the resources at our disposal as efficiently as possible. For example, if you wanted to reduce the amount of energy you use year on year on heating your building, the most logical place to start would be to make the insulation as efficient as possible.
Schaffner tells us that in order to achieve the best possible results it is key to identify and incorporate your goals early in the process.

Melinda Kendall speaks to us about her work as the SVP of Sustainability for Freeman Company. With a background in marketing, Kendall believes that data and storytelling lie at the heart of success in the industry. You need to present the data at your disposal in a way that speaks to people you are pitching to. Kendall goes on to stress that businesses should have the attitude to view sustainability as a way of improving their bottom line, not merely as an ethical trade-off to greater profit margins. Much of this comes down to developing a competitive advantage, using more efficient and sustainable practices or even microeconomic factors as simple as economies of scale.
Reduce, reuse and recycle. Kendall shares the importance of respecting the order of these three R’s of the circular economy. Always start with reducing as much as you can, rethink how necessary or vital what you use on a day to day is. It is always the best place to start and can often save you lots of money that can be better spent in other areas of your business or funneled into further sustainable practices.

As the Chief Sustainability Officer for the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention, York has a unique vantage point to observe the relationship between our build environment and health in its various forms. Her career path has taken her through architecture, into construction, eventually landing on sustainability, where she has been tasked with seeing how we can harness modern science and apply it to the built environment. York emphasizes how strongly associated our physical and mental health are with the buildings we work and live in and how the importance of tackling the related issues has often been overlooked.
When trying to bring stakeholders on board with sustainable business goals, York stresses how important it is to understand their wants and needs and produce a tailored solution in accordance with these goals.
People, planet, pocketbook. This is the triple bottom line for sustainability according to York. If you bare these three factors in mind when thinking how you can implement sustainable practices in your business, you will have the best chance to create solutions your stakeholders can get behind.

Chris Ladner admits honestly that he was quite late to the party compared to many of his counterparts when discussing how he got his start in sustainability. In this interview Ladner discusses how he ended up working as a Founding Partner for Entegrity and how we should approach the matter of sustainable change with stakeholders.
For Ladner he fell into sustainability somewhat unintentionally. When he was first introduced to how much of the building sector made their construction decisions, he realized that they didn’t consider key factors such as energy and material efficiency. The change in attitude he wanted to support has its’ foundations in logic and a true business perspective. To him, it seemed totally reckless to disregard such vital factors. Ultimately sustainable practices are by their very nature built around efficiency, longevity and responsibility.
Ladner’s advice to those looking to get stakeholders on side is to make sure that you understand them and know what it is that motivates them. You need to find a way to define exactly how it is good for their business. You must do so in logical steps. Start with how it makes sense financially, then the community benefits and how buildings can have a net positive effect on community and use that platform to scale up from.

As the Global Director of Sustainability of Packing at Unilever, Brett Domoy is on the front line in the battle to reduce excess packaging and in particular the widespread efforts to limit the use of single-use plastics. Domoy grew up, and to this day lives on a grain farm and believes that his first-hand experience of climate change drove him to action.
In this interview Domoy discusses the importance of implementing circular design and the ethos and practices of the circular economy into industry. He goes on to state the importance of breaking down and understanding the constituent elements of the circular economy and to try and remove greenwashing from industry today.
Domoy believes that the modern consumer is constantly evolving and that it is his job and the job of others to make sure the benefits of more sustainable methods and practices are made clear to consumers. The key is not only to aim to use less or no plastic but if plastic is being used to use plastics that are better for the environment.

Daniele Horton’s passion for nature started at a young age, growing up in her native Brazil. As an architect by trade Horton wished to apply her skills and knowledge in a sustainable way. She was unhappy with the slow rate of change in the real estate sector as a whole. After the 2016 US Election she started a non-profit organization called Verdani Institute for the Built Environment. This aims to accelerate sustainable practices in the building sector. Horton explains that the benefits from green building can include productivity boosts from 5-18%. Horton warns that at this point in time it is riskier for businesses to not take action, it seems illogical to build something that is outdated from the get-go.
Going green is a win-win in Horton’s eyes, you will save money from greater efficiency, make money from a healthier and more productive workforce, and all the while you will be minimizing damage to the environment.
Horton ends by giving a wealth of advice to women who are starting out. She stressed the importance of aligning yourself with purpose driven organizations. Try to become an agent of change. Don’t give up! The start will be tough, try to use your feminine edge as a strength, do not see it as a weakness.

Our Editorial Content Manager Jordan Thorne sat down with Amanda Sturgeon, Former CEO at International Living Future Institute.
Amanda Sturgeon has always wanted to work alongside the natural world, and it has been a lifelong ambition to encompass architecture and her sustainable ideals. As the former CEO at the International Living Future Institute, Sturgeon's prime position was to enact meaningful change in the built environment that can have a positive impact on our lives and the environment. The cumulative time we all spend in buildings means they have the profound ability to shape how we feel, our health, happiness, and even relationships. Sturgeon explains how we ought to have buildings that can connect us with nature, and buildings that act like the ecosystems that exist in the natural world. They should adapt with time, should be resilient and adaptable.
When asked how best to validate moving towards green building, Sturgeon notes that employees are often always the single biggest cost for most businesses. Their health, mental and physical wellbeing should be held paramount. If you look after your employees you will ultimately reap the economic rewards of having a healthier, motivated and more productive workforce.
Sturgeon leaves us with a brilliant fact, that when you spend 1 hour in nature, you get a 20% increase in productivity. If our workspaces can somehow incorporate nature effectively, there is no knowing how much business can benefit.
