A short lecture on the way in which 18th-century barrel organs in England played organ music by Handel. Many aristocrats had such instruments in their houses at that time and the way the music was programmed on them naturally corresponded to the musical taste of the time. Here is the link to the Holland organ from 1790 that can be heard in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgBjksRoX9g Here you can listen to a complete recording of all four movements of op. 4 No. 5: https://hobartrecorderplayers.com/an-18th-century-recording-of-handels-recorder-sonata-no-4-in-f-major/ Apparently, John Langshaw (1718-98) was indeed the organ builder of this instrument. And having lived for 80 years, his musical taste was shaped by the musical aesthetics of Handel's time.
Postlude on ”Sonne der Gerechtigkeit” (Sun of Justice) for organ by Hans-André StammHans-Andre Stamm2021-07-19 | recording from july 18th in the ev. For this reason I transposed Boyce’s voluntary to C major, and also because a f# major chord, which occurs in the piece, is not possible in this tuning (sharp third f# bb) , which is in D major and orginally for harpsichord. Boyce must already have had a modified meantone tuning.
