WORLDS MOST DANGEROUS nuclear power plant is closed in Japan AFAskygoddess 2011-05-08 | *The Hamaoko plant has an 87 % chance of suffering a powerful quake, say Japanese government scientists* Prime Minister Naoto Kan has stunned Japan's power industry by asking for the closure of the country's most controversial atomic plant, eight weeks after a huge earthquake and tsunami triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl. Mr Kan said the authorities in Japan have long accepted the high probability of a major jolt underneath the Hamaoka complex, about 200km south-west of Tokyo. "This is a decision made for the safety of the Japanese people when I consider the special conditions of the Hamaoka plant," he told reporters. Some seismologists have called Hamaoka the world's most dangerous nuclear power facility. Government forecasts have predicted an 87 per cent chance of a powerful quake in the area, which sits on two major subterranean faults. A major accident would be likely to force the evacuation of Greater Tokyo, home to 28 million people. The warnings have been given more urgency since the start of the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, 250km north-east of the capital. The plant's cooling systems were destroyed by March's magnitude-9 quake and the 15-metre tsunami that followed. Hamaoka is presently built to withstand only an 8.5-magnitude quake and an eight-metre tsunami. Plant operator Chubu Electric Power Co will temporarily shut down reactors 4 and 5 and cancel the resumption of reactor 3, which was due to restart in the summer. Reactors 1 and 2 have been permanently mothballed. A sixth reactor is also planned. Mr Kan said the directive would continue until the "appropriate" safety measures were taken, including the strengthening of tsunami walls around the complex. "The Prime Minister's announcement is a huge step toward permanently closing this power plant and an acknowledgement that it is too dangerous to operate," said Yoshika Shiratori, who is leading a lawsuit against Hamaoka. "We hope this is the beginning of the end for nuclear power in Japan, where constant earthquakes make them too risky." It was unclear last night how Chubu Electric and the rest of Japan's nuclear industry will react. Legal experts told the media the premier has no authority to stop power plants from operating. Akihisa Mizuno, president of Chubu Electric, declined to comment. "We will try to respond as soon as possible," he said. Tepco dumped 195 tons of fresh water onto the rods early Wednesday to stop the temperature from rising. Cesium-137 in the Body Radioactive elements contaminate the body's cells either environmentally via gamma radiation or through inhalation and ingestion. It affects the chromosomes within tissue cells, but the injury to the body is caused primarily by interfering with cell biology and breaking apart molecules. This creates free radicals, or single electrons usually present in pairs. Cells are capable of repairing the damaged genetic material, but high levels of exposure can overwhelm the system. It poses a threat to American crops and the people who eat them. *Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D's interview with Newsmax* Dr. Blaylock says the radiation could pose a cancer risk, and explains steps to take to protect against the damaging effects of radiation exposure. Blaylock is a health practitioner, lecturer, and editor of Newsmax.com's "Blaylock Wellness Report." His books include "Nuclear Sunrise," which examines the threat nuclear radiation poses. And they're getting close to that level, from what I understand. "The safety level is set at 5 rads per year. They're getting this dose within a short period of time. "At about 100 to 400 rads you drastically increase death risk. Once you get above 600 rads, about 95 percent of people are going to die within two weeks. This is what they're worried about." Radioactive elements Strontium 90 and Cesium 137, which can be released by a damaged reactor, "have a half-life of 30 years, so we're talking about very long contamination, a hundred years or more," he adds. Prevailing winds in the area of the stricken Japanese reactors have been heading east into the Pacific, toward the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Blaylock was asked about the threat to Americans if radiation from the reactors eventually does reach Hawaii or the West Coast of America. "Most of the health risks are not going to be due to acute radiation poisoning," he tells Newsmax. "It's going to be a risk of increased cancer. "When we look at Chernobyl, most of West Germany was heavily contaminated. Norway, Sweden. Hungary was terribly contaminated. The radiation was taken up into the plants. The food was radioactive. They took the milk and turned it into cheese. The cheese was radioactive. "That's the big danger, the crops in this country being contaminated, the milk in particular, with Strontium 90. That radiation is incorporated into the bones and stays for a lifetime." If radiation does arrive in the United States, people would need "to change their diet. They need to stop eating Western farm products," Dr. Blaylock says. They might also need to take several supplements that can protect against the effects of radiation, he suggests. "Taking these supplements not only protects you against radiation but a lot of other diseases including cancer, brain degeneration." Among the supplements he cited, Iodine can protect the thyroid gland if taken before the exposure to radiation. Gingko biloba can be protective even after exposure to radiation. Beta-glucan protects the bone marrow. Curcumin also can offer protection after exposure, particularly against breast cancer. He also suggests garlic extract, ginger, melatonin and magnesium. Nuclear Fuel Rod Meltdown 101- Arnie Gundersen explains Fukushima AFAskygoddess 2011-04-11 | Zircaloy is one of the major reasons why the Fukushima crisis is scary. Fairewinds Associates chief nuclear engineer explains the dynamics of the damage in a nuclear reactor meltdown. Rods are made of zircaloy. He demonstrates how Fukushima's zircaloy fuel rods melted and shattered. *Zircaloy is a problem* Fuel rods in many types of nuclear reactors consist of pellets of fissile material (uranium and plutonium) sheathed in a metal alloy called zircaloy, made unsurprisingly from zirconium. Zircaloy seems to be one of the major reasons why the Fukushima crisis is scary. When the earthquake happened, the reactors automatically inserted neutron-absorbing control rods to stop the nuclear chain reaction. This process is called a SCRAM. Despite this, the fuel rods are still producing heat because of other ongoing nuclear reactions (decay heat). This is what makes Zircaloy so worrisome, because when it gets heated up it can oxidize or burn exothermically, producing even more heat. That adds to the risk that fissile material will end up in the wider environment. It also adds to the risk that the nuclear fuel will melt, dribble down to the bottom of the reactor containment vessel, and re-form a critical mass. That's the really scary possibility, as far as reactors one, two, and three at Fukushima are concerned. If the fissile material in the fuel rods forms a critical mass again, it could melt through the bottom of the containment vessel. It could also trigger a large steam and/or hydrogen explosion that could spread radiation further. There are other risks with Zircaloy. When hot, it oxidizes in the presence of water, stripping oxygen from water molecules and producing explosive hydrogen. Zircaloy is also what makes spent storage pools so scary. If they lose cooling, the rods can heat up, burn, and release large amounts of radiation into the environment. Cooling ponds are not placed inside containment vessels in the same way reactor cores are. Cooling of the spent fuel pool was temporarily lost, but has subsequently been restored. No change has been observed in the readings from the on-site radiation monitoring post. The status of the plant is currently being checked. Tokai Daini Nuclear Power Plant Tokai Daini nuclear power plant remains in cold shutdown since the 11 March earthquake. No abnormality has been observed. Higashidori Nuclear Power Plant NISA has confirmed that the Higashidori NPP was shutdown and in a maintenance outage at the time of the 7 April earthquake. Off-site power has been lost. Emergency power supply to the site is operating. All the fuel had been removed from the reactor core and stored in the spent fuel pool. Cooling of the spent fuel pool is operational. Tomari Nuclear Power Plant (in Hokkaido) At the time of the 7 April earthquake Tomari Unit 1 and Unit 2 were in operation. Following the 7 April earthquake, the Hokkaido Electric Power Company reduced the generating power to 90% of capacity. There were 11,500 tons of radioactive water 7,500,000 TIMES the legal limit of iodine 131 released. 11,5000 x 7,500,000 / 45 = 1,916,666,666 According to CNN math, the radioactive water released would fill 1,916,666,666 (one billion nine hundred sixteen million six hundred sixty six thousand six hundred sixty six) swimming pools that are 100% over the legal limit of radioactive iodine 131. Is it OK if I round this up to 2 billion, since no one knows exactly the volume of the Pacific Ocean so maybe you rounded up too? AGAIN, radioactive water 100% over the legal radiation limit would fill 2,000,000,000 (two billion) swimming pools which hold 45 tons of water. Wow, what a relief. I thought there was a real problem in the Pacific for a minute (she said, sarcastically). To put that in perspective, the population of China is about 1,300,000,000 (one billion three hundred million) people. HYDROGEN build-up inside Fukushima Reactor #1 - EXPLOSION fears AFAskygoddess 2011-04-06 | *Nitrogen injected into Fukushima reactor to reduce risk of explosion* Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Thursday started injecting nitrogen into one of the reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex to reduce the potential risk of a hydrogen explosion, while it succeeded in stopping highly radioactive water leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the plant the previous day. Nitrogen, an inert gas, was injected into the No. 1 reactor's containment vessel, a process that could take several days. Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, denied there is an ''immediate danger'' of explosion and described the injection as ''a preventive measure.'' At 5:38 a.m. Wednesday, highly contaminated water, which had been confirmed as leaking into the sea from around a cracked pit located near the No. 2 reactor water intake on Saturday, stopped flowing after TEPCO injected around 6,000 liters of chemical agents including sodium silicate, known as ''water glass.'' Nishiyama told a press conference... there is a possibility that the water, which has lost an outlet, could show up from other areas of the plant. To make room to store the highly radioactive water that is hampering the plant's restoration work, TEPCO continued to dump into the sea massive amounts of low-level contaminated water from inside a nuclear waste disposal facility at the site as well as contaminated groundwater found from around the Nos. 5 and 6 unit buildings. TEPCO is aiming to dispose of a total of about 10,000 tons of low-level contaminated water into the sea by this weekend, a move which has sparked concern among neighboring countries and strong protests from the domestic fishing industry. After opening up the disposal facility, which can accommodate 30,000 tons of liquid, some repair work is expected to take place for about a week to ensure that the facility can retain highly radioactive water safely without fear of the stored liquid leaking outside. The plant's power grid and most of the emergency diesel generators were knocked out by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11, resulting in the loss of many of the reactors' key cooling functions, partial melting of reactor cores and hydrogen explosions. According to estimates by TEPCO announced Wednesday, 25 percent of the nuclear fuel rods have been damaged at the No. 3 reactor. The company earlier said that 70 percent of the No. 1 reactor's fuel rods and 30 percent of the No. 2 reactor's fuel rods have been damaged. Nishiyama said past hydrogen explosions have likely occurred due to hydrogen accumulation caused by the reaction of melted fuel rods' zirconium with steam from the coolant water. But now there is concern that hydrogen could accumulate in the No. 1 reactor under a different process involving radiation-induced decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen. In announcing TEPCO's decision to inject nitrogen into the reactor's containment vessel, an operation approved by the government, the nuclear agency said that radioactive leaks are ''unlikely to significantly rise'' even if the pressure inside the vessel increases as a result of the injection. Nishiyama said that he also expects nitrogen to be injected into the Nos. 2 and 3 reactors in the future. The utility has been pouring massive amounts of water into the reactors and their spent nuclear fuel pools as a stopgap measure to cool them down. But the measure is causing ''side effects,'' such as the detection of contaminated water in various parts of the nuclear complex and some leakage into the sea. A seawater sample taken near the No. 2 reactor water intake on Saturday showed a radioactive iodine-131 concentration of 7.5 million times the maximum level permitted under law, or about 300,000 becquerels per cubic centimeter.
