In 2020, he was a Fogarty Global Health Fellow, under the mentorship of Dr. Sylvia LaCourse and Dr. Grace John-Stewart from the University of Washington, along with Dr. John Kinuthia from Kenyatta National Hospital. His research focuses on tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) among people living with HIV, including evaluating TPT cascades and assessing adherence using urine dipstick tests developed by the University of Washington Bioengineering Department. For his CFAR Mentored International Investigator Award (MIIA), Dr. Onyango is adapting the Systems Analysis and Improvement Approach (SAIA) to enhance the TPT cascade for people with HIV. In 2024, he submitted a K43 application to support his transition to independent research.

Promoting First Relationships Program is an Evidence-Based home visiting model shown, through six randomized clinical trials in diverse populations, to improve the caregivers’ capacity to provide safe, stable, and nurturing care. The project is linked to the Maternal to Child Virome Transmission (MTCV) study, a prospective cohort study collaboration between the UW and University of Nairobi Schools of Medicine. Dr. Ojee is a Consultant Paediatrician and lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Health Sciences in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. Additionally, she coordinates the University’s Emergency, Triage and Treatment+ (ETAT+) training program that applies an evidence-based approach to emergency pediatric management emphasizing reduction of morbidity and mortality from the top five killers of children below the age of five globally. Dr. Ojee received a UW CFAR International Pilot Award to support her explore PhD aims among women living with HIV. As part of growing her research career and interest in the area of improving newborn survival; Dr. Ojee has nested her PhD work within the MTCV study. She is applying a mixed methods approach in exploring the influence of home visits on health outcomes of mothers and infants, eliciting perspectives of various stakeholders in the receipt and provision of home visits and determining the cost of providing the same. The MTCV study has since been extended to include assessment of neurodevelopment outcomes among the children.

Dr. Murphy obtained her PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph, Canada, where she focused on appropriate household water treatment technologies in rural Cambodia. Following her PhD, she worked for the United Nations International Emergency Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Specialist in Mali and Madagascar. She returned to academia in 2013 and completed a research fellowship with the Public Health Agency of Canada where she focused on quantifying the burden of waterborne disease on the Canadian population. Prior to joining Temple she was a research fellow at the University of Guelph where she conducted research on the challenges of water provision in Canadian First Nations communities. Dr. Murphy’s research interests involve understanding and addressing water and health challenges in both developed and developing countries. She currently leads the Water, Health and Applied Microbiology (WHAM) Lab. Since joining Temple in 2015, her research has been funded by the USGS, the NIH, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, Grand Challenges Canada, and the Philadelphia Water Department.

She worked in infectious disease research in Africa for several years prior to obtaining an MPH from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and later attended medical school at Tufts University. Ana is a physician-scientist in the Infectious Diseases Division with a focus on enteric diseases and oral vaccines. Her research is supported by a mentored career development award from the NIH. Her current interests are understanding the gut microbiome influence on susceptibility to enteric infections, modulation of immune responses by the gut microbiome, and pathogen-gut microbe interactions at the mucosal surface.

He attended Princeton University, where he majored in philosophy and returned to the University of Virgina (UVA) for medical school in 2005. After completing his internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco in 2012, Platts-Mills returned to UVA for his fellowship training in infectious diseases. He joined the University of Virginia School of Medicine faculty in 2015. His clinical interests include general infectious diseases and tropical medicine. His research focuses on the application of novel quantitative molecular diagnostics to the epidemiology of enteric diseases in children in developing countries.

Previously, Ajoke was Cluster Head at Novartis Vaccines, Cambridge, where she managed the maternal immunization clinical development program for Group B streptococcus vaccine, including the successful IND filing for the first clinical trials in pregnant women in the United States. Ajoke completed her residency in pediatric and adolescent medicine at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and her pediatric infectious disease fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical School, New York. She holds a MD degree from the Free University of Berlin, and a Dr. Med. degree from the Institute of Tropical Medicine at the University of Hamburg, both in Germany. She also holds a M.Sc. degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in England.Jerker Liljestrand is Deputy Director a.i. (ad interim) in the MNCH PST, with responsibilities for innovation, implementation research and demonstration for scale. He is an MD, specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. After 20 years of clinical work, including 2 years early on in Mozambique, he has spent the rest of his professional life on public health aspects of sexual and reproductive health and rights. This has included teaching, training, research and program management, within academia, WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and most recently during 6 years working to support the national MNH program in Cambodia. He has over the years been engaged in various aspects of reproductive health and research in many LMICs. Jerker has a PhD from Uppsala University, and has been Associate Professor of Public Health at Lund University, both in Sweden.

Avni has published on gender socialization and adolescence. She has 20 years of experience working on gender equality and sexual and reproductive health. She will speak about the evidence on the links between violence against women and sexual reproductive health with a focus on prevention and response among adolescent girls.

In this talk, Dr. Barbara Goff will share her perspectives on current challenges in academic medicine, and lead a discussion on strategies to integrate obstetrics and gynecology more into Global WACh.Dr. Goff received her MD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She then completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Goff joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1993 and has been the Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology since 2005. In 2009 she was appointed as the Service Chief for Gynecology and in 2015 she was appointed Surgeon-in-Chief for the University of Washington Medical Center.Dr. Goff has held numerous national positions. She is a past president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and she has held leadership positions in the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists, the National Board of Medical Examiners, and she has been the Chair of the Ovarian Cancer Committee of the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation. Dr. Goff is an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The locale of his work has been mostly in Malawi, although he works throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The scope of his work includes developing and introducing ready-to-use therapeutic and complementary foods for infants and children, understanding the pathophysiology and metabolism of malnutrition, and determining the role of the gut microbiota andmetabolome in kwashiorkor and marasmus, and well as zinc homeostasis. He is currently formulating and evaluating new foods designed to augment the therapy of HIV in Africa and is involved in agricultural endeavors including improving the nutritional content of locally grown products, such as cassava.
