In this video, we visit our brother from another mother, Darwin, and stay at his gorgeous new jungle glamping site on the edge of the rainforest in North Sumatra.

We head out on a night trek to spot rare wildlife, trek through the jungle to a hidden hot spring, and go river tubing on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park...

Jungle Trekking in Sumatra 🇮🇩 We Skipped Bukit Lawang for THIS Hidden Gem

Exploring Sumatra with Agung and Carly 2025-07-17 | Looking for the best place to go jungle trekking in North Sumatra? We think we may have found it. 🌿 Most travellers go jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang 🦧 (for good reason, it’s a beautiful area), but we're often drawn to the quieter Sumatran villages with fewer tourists.

So with our good Kiwi friend Kalem (@TheKiwiGrower), we decided to skip Bukit Lawang and head to Batu Katak – a dreamy little jungle village right on the edge of the rainforest (the Gunung Leuser National Park).

Spending 3 nights in this stunning Sumatra trekking paradise was perfect. We embarked on two day-long jungle treks – one into the rainforest in search of rafflesia, and another into the karst forest to explore a river cave and witness the enormous amorphophallus titanum blooms.

We tubed down the river, explored caves, swam under waterfalls, saw Siamang and Lar gibbons, sun bear and Sumatran tiger footprints, ate amazing Indonesian food, learned about local plants, and just had the ultimate authentic Sumatra jungle experience.

The Indonesian tourist village of Tuktuk in Lake Toba (North Sumatra) is an idyllic, sleepy lakeside haven, reminiscent of Bali back in the day.

In today's video, we take you for an early morning walk around our beautiful Sumatran village, giving you an insider's glimpse into authentic day to day life for the locals.

Once a popular stop on the "banana pancake trail" in the 80s and 90s, Tuktuk became a bit of a ghost town over the ensuing years. While Lake Toba is beginning to reclaim it's status as a must-visit place in Sumatra, this sleepy village retains its authentic, local village charm and is the perfect place to immerse in Batak culture, relax in the cooler climate, and enjoy the incredible beauty of the world's largest volcanic lake.

Some of the best things to do in Lake Toba are little mini-adventures, like a fun scooter ride up into the mountains for incredible Toba views and some delicious Indonesian food.

Today, we head out from Tuktuk, Lake Toba, through Tomok village, and up to Parhallow Viewpoint for some pisang goreng (fried bananas) and gorgeous scenery. We show you exactly how to get there (just 20 minutes from Tuktuk village) and guide you through one of the best things to do in Lake Toba - perfect for beginner scooter riders or if you're just looking for incredible views without too much time on the road!

🏠 Shopping to Upgrade Our Indonesian House: Why Is It So Hard? 😅

Exploring Sumatra with Agung and Carly 2025-04-23 | Fresh off the plane from New Zealand and straight into house frustration mode. 😩 After a few weeks of comfy Western living, many things in our Sumatran house suddenly feels… questionable at best. Garish furniture? Check. Too much clutter? Check. Mysterious smells? Double check.

So we decided it was time for a glow-up. 💪 Off we went to the local homeware stores in our tiny village, full of hope, dreams, and Pinterest visions.

And let’s just say… reality hit hard. 😂

Exploring Sumatra with Agung and Carly 2025-01-08 | After about a decade of living in Sumatra, the culture shocks in Indonesia have been pretty minor and easy to adjust to... but this New Year's, we invited Agung's Karonese family to spend a few days staying with us - and it was a huge reminder of how different life in Indonesia is from life in New Zealand!

We had 21 people staying in our little house in Lake Toba for 3 nights, uniting as a family to sing, eat, swim, fish and explore.

It may have been loud, it may have been a bit chaotic, but it was SO MUCH FUN! Join us for a glimpse of what life is like when you're part of a large Indonesian family.

A Peaceful Walk Through the Fields in Sumatra - Lake Toba Vlog

Exploring Sumatra with Agung and Carly 2024-09-29 | Stroll with us through the lush green fields on Samosir Island in Lake Toba. We head away from our little village of Tuktuk and into the community gardens, where the local people plant and nurture corn, peanuts, chillies, and cacao.
