I’m an individual RSGB member paying £6.16 per month, or £73.92 per year. But an entire amateur radio club can affiliate to the RSGB for around the same annual amount.
And that raises a rather awkward question.
If you already belong to an RSGB-affiliated amateur radio club, what exactly are you getting from your individual RSGB membership that you aren’t already receiving, directly or indirectly, through your club?
The comparison becomes particularly interesting when we look at public liability insurance. Individual RSGB membership doesn’t provide personal PLI, whereas qualifying activities of an affiliated club can benefit from the RSGB’s club insurance arrangements.
So why pay for both?
In this video I follow the money, look at what individual membership actually buys, what an affiliated club receives, what you would lose by cancelling individual membership, and ask how some extremely intelligent people could sit around a table over tea and biscuits and arrive at this rather curious membership structure.
There is also a fascinating behavioural-science question here.
Loss aversion. Status quo bias. Inertia.
How much of any long-standing membership organisation’s retention comes from people positively choosing to renew, and how much comes from simply continuing to do what they’ve always done?

In this episode I talk with Gwyn Griffiths G3ZIL about a fascinating piece of amateur-radio research featured in the September 2026 edition of RadCom: using extraordinarily precise time-of-flight measurements of HF radio signals to investigate how signals actually propagate through the ionosphere.
And that conversation leads to a much bigger question:
Could ordinary radio amateurs become genuine citizen scientists?
The answer is emphatically yes.
Gwyn explains how measurements made by radio amateurs can reveal propagation mechanisms that simple signal-strength measurements may not distinguish. His work examines great-circle propagation, Sporadic-E, side scatter, propagation above the MUF and other paths, showing just how much information can be hiding inside the signals arriving at our antennas.
But you don’t need Gwyn’s experimental equipment to start investigating propagation yourself.
We explore how radio amateurs can use WSPR, WSPRnet and WSPR Rocks to investigate real-world HF propagation. WSPRnet describes itself as the Weak Signal Propagation Reporter Network, while WSPR Rocks provides powerful tools for searching, mapping and analysing WSPR observations.
We also discuss PROPquest, created by Jim Bacon G3YLA and colleagues. PROPquest uses real ionosonde measurements, including data from Chilton and Fairford, to help amateurs understand what the ionosphere is actually doing rather than relying entirely on predictions.
And if you’d like to take citizen science further, take a look at HamSCI, the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation. HamSCI brings amateur radio operators and professional researchers together to advance scientific understanding through amateur-radio observations. Its projects include ionospheric and space-weather research, and it explicitly encourages amateurs to contribute to genuine scientific work.
We even discuss another potential shack project: building or buying a magnetometer and beginning to observe changes in the Earth’s magnetic field and space weather for yourself.
The remarkable thing is that amateur radio already gives us a worldwide network of transmitters, receivers, antennas, SDRs, computers and curious people.
Every WSPR spot is a measurement.
Every unexpected opening is a question.
Every signal that doesn’t behave quite as the propagation model predicted is an opportunity to ask why?
You don’t have to be a professional scientist to do science.
You need curiosity, measurements, repeatability and the willingness to question what you think you already know.

In this short video, I look at something remarkably easy to get wrong: cleaning the front panel, display, knobs and controls of an amateur-radio transceiver.
There are aerosols, screen cleaners, household cleaners, alcohol-based products, detailing products, cleaning gels and all manner of chemicals being suggested online for cleaning radio equipment. But just because something makes a radio look clean doesn’t mean it has been tested as safe for the plastics, coatings, printed legends, adhesives, seals and display surfaces used by the manufacturer.
We even look at what a Safety Data Sheet actually says about the intended use of one cleaning product, and why ‘I’ve used it and nothing happened’ isn’t the same thing as proper materials-compatibility testing.
In Britain, we have the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, the national accreditation body responsible for accrediting competent testing laboratories. So when we’re talking about chemicals and materials, there is a rather better standard of evidence than somebody on the internet saying, ‘I’ve always used this.’
And sometimes the safest answer is wonderfully boring:
Follow the radio manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. A soft cloth, lightly dampened with water where specified, may be all your expensive transceiver actually needs.
Whether you own a FlexRadio, Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood, Elecraft, Xiegu, QRP Labs or another modern transceiver, think before putting an unapproved chemical on that front panel.
📻 Your radio doesn’t need to smell of lemon. It needs to work.

After months of appearing under the project name X-026, Icom has now revealed the IC-7110 at Tokyo Ham Fair 2026.
And this is where things get interesting.
Because this isn’t a conventional product launch followed by a review. What we have at the moment is Icom’s pre-release information.
There is no confirmed UK price. There is no confirmed delivery date. There is no full production specification sheet yet.
And before this radio gets anywhere near a UK or European dealer, there is the necessary regulatory and conformity process to get through.
So this video isn’t a review.
It’s an early N+1 buyers guide.
Because let’s be honest, amateur radio has a peculiar relationship with the letter N.
There is always N+1.
The question is whether the IC-7110 is actually the radio that deserves to become N+1.
The IC-7110 is the successor to the IC-7100 and covers HF, 50 MHz, 70 MHz, 144 MHz and 430/440 MHz, with 100 watts on HF and 50 MHz and 50 watts on 144 and 430 MHz. The UK and European version gets 70 MHz as standard.
It also brings a 4.3-inch colour touchscreen, real-time spectrum scope and waterfall, FT8 configuration, CW decoding, D-STAR functionality, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Dualwatch. IC-7110_pre_EN_A4_web.pdf
But some of the really interesting questions are not answered by the headline specifications.

And there is an even bigger difference between reading a specification sheet and understanding what the thing will actually be like to own.
The IC-7110 is currently pre-release information. Icom has not yet confirmed pricing, production or delivery dates.
So before we all start mentally rearranging the shack and explaining to our partners why this particular radio is absolutely essential, let’s take a proper look at it.
Because ultimately there is only one question:

Same antenna. Same coax. Same transmitter. Real RF measurements.
The antenna was a Wonder Wand Wide Bander Mk III, driven by an Icom IC-705 at 5 W.
We measured the RF current using an RF.Guru RF Current Meter, and separately checked SWR using an MFJ-259B antenna analyser.
The result?
The Super Yagi Nexus produced the lowest measured common-mode current on every band tested.
The LDG also reduced the measured common-mode current, but by a smaller amount.
We also looked at the effect of each choke on SWR and found some interesting differences, particularly towards the top of the HF range.
But there’s an important engineering distinction here.
The RF.Guru meter gives us a comparative measurement of common-mode current in our actual antenna system. It does not, by itself, establish laboratory S21 attenuation in dB.
Super Yagi’s published specification claims approximately 30 dB common-mode attenuation, based on laboratory S21 measurements using a VNA and test fixture. That’s a different measurement from what we are doing here.
So this isn’t a laboratory certification test.
It’s something arguably more interesting for the average amateur: what happens when you actually put these things into a working HF station?
And then there’s the price.
One choke is rated at 200 W PEP.
The other is rated at 1 kW PEP.
So what are you actually getting for your money?
Is the expensive choke worth it?
Does the cheaper choke do enough?
And which one would you put on your own antenna?

Is 1:1 SWR really proof that you have a great antenna?
Not necessarily.
In this video, we take a closer look at SWR, resonance, antenna efficiency and antenna tuning, and why radio amateurs can sometimes become a little too obsessed with getting that magic 1:1 reading.
Inspired in part by discussions around SWR Derangement Syndrome, including ideas discussed by Joeri ON6URE, and with a nod to Mark, the Florida Ham Man, we look at what an SWR meter is actually telling us… and what it isn’t.
A low SWR tells us that the impedance presented to the transmission line is a good match. But that doesn’t automatically tell us how efficiently the antenna is radiating.
A 50-ohm load can contain radiation resistance and loss resistance. The SWR meter doesn’t know which is which. It simply says, “Lovely. Fifty ohms. Carry on.”
And that raises the more important question:
Where did the RF power actually go?
Did it become useful radiation?
Did it become heat?
Is RF flowing somewhere we didn’t intend, perhaps as common-mode current on the outside of the coax?
We also look at the difference between resonance and efficiency, why a resonant antenna isn’t necessarily an efficient antenna, why 1:1 SWR doesn’t automatically mean a great antenna, and why an ATU isn’t necessarily the enemy when you’re trying to get RF into the air.
This is particularly important for QRP operators, portable operators and anyone using compact or loaded antennas where efficiency can be a significant compromise.
And yes… we’ll be talking about the cheating SWR meter.
Because:
SWR tells you how happy the radio is. It doesn’t necessarily tell you how happy the other station is.

Before you spend another £100, £200 or £500 on an HF antenna, there is a much better question to ask: what are you actually trying to achieve?
In this 2026 Amateur Radio Antenna Buyers’ Guide, we look beyond SWR, marketing claims and antenna popularity to examine what actually determines the results you get on the HF bands.
The antenna is only one part of the system.
We explore antenna efficiency, radiation efficiency, ground systems, radials, counterpoises, common-mode current, feedline losses, matching networks, propagation, receiver noise, antenna height, installation, deployment time and measurement uncertainty.
We also look at a deceptively important question:
Are you buying watts you don’t need while throwing away watts you already have?
A 35%-efficient antenna versus a 90%-efficient antenna represents approximately 4.1 dB. At 100 watts, that’s 35 watts radiated versus 90 watts. To radiate the same 90 watts from the less efficient system would require approximately 257 watts at the transmitter.
And what about a 9 dB difference?
That’s almost eight times the transmitter power.
Suddenly, antenna efficiency starts looking rather different.
We also consider the things that are much harder to reproduce in amateur-radio antenna comparisons: ground conductivity, installation height, surroundings, common-mode current, feedline losses, calibration, reference antennas, receiving systems and propagation.
And there’s an important distinction between observational data and controlled experiments. WSPR and PSK Reporter can provide enormously useful data, but a collection of spots is not automatically a controlled antenna experiment.
The central idea of this video is simple:
Don’t start with the antenna. Start with the result you want.
Are you operating POTA, SOTA, DX, FT8, SSB or local communications?
Do you need maximum efficiency, rapid deployment, portability, low cost, reliability, or simply an antenna that you will actually put up and use?
Because the “best” antenna isn’t necessarily the one with the most impressive specification sheet.
It may be the antenna that gives you the best combination of performance, cost, efficiency, deployment time and reliability.
And perhaps most importantly:
Don’t let impressive numbers make the decision for you.
Understand what was measured. Understand what was assumed. Understand what can be reproduced. Then make your own choice.

Yes… but it wasn’t quite as straightforward as we expected! 😂
In this video, I take the FlexRadio Aurora into a portable/field operating setup and attempt to connect it to an iPad running SmartSDR, using a TP-Link router/access point to create the local network.
What initially looked like it should be a simple connection turned out to involve a few important details about how the Aurora, SmartSDR and the network interact.
The end result is exactly what I wanted: the iPad can operate the Aurora remotely over the local TP-Link network, giving me a genuinely portable SmartSDR operating setup.

The POTA PERformer, designed by Greg Mihran (KJ6ER), is one of the cleverest portable HF antennas available. Greg has made the complete design freely available, allowing anyone to build a highly efficient multiband vertical for very little cost. It works from 20 metres to 2 metres using resonant elements and has rightly earned widespread recognition.
This video follows the journey from my original two-radial tests, through statistical analysis, constructive criticism from Joeri, and finally an unexpected equipment fault during a real POTA activation that completely changed my conclusion.
During my latest activation from Weaver Hills using the FlexRadio Aurora, a poor radial connection highlighted just how important redundancy can be in the real world. That experience reinforced what theory had been suggesting all along.
🎯 My conclusion: use four elevated, tuned radials. They’re simple to deploy, tolerant of real-world conditions, and, in my experience, outperform any portable system using ground-laid radials.
