This modest dwelling was the boyhood home of Henry Fountain Ashurst, Arizona’s first U.S. Senator, renowned as the “Silver-tongued Orator of Congress.” Originally located in a remote box canyon near Ashurst Lake, the cabin was home to the Ashurst family, who faced isolation and harsh frontier conditions. With the father often away trapping wild horses and ranching sheep, Mrs. Ashurst managed the household, cooking over a fireplace or outdoor campfire, making garments, and teaching her children to read and write. In 1968, to save it from ruin, the cabin was carefully dismantled and transported piece by piece via a 200-foot steel cable tramway to its current location at the museum. The relocation was made possible by the Babbitt Land and Cattle Company and restoration funds from Modern Pioneers’ Life Insurance Co. 🏡 The Northern Home – Frontier Family Life in Arizona’s High Country #arizona #history #oldwest Cactus Atlas 2025-06-28 | Experience the rugged charm of the Northern Home, an original 1880s log cabin relocated from Newman Canyon near Flagstaff to the Pioneer Living History Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Built around 1885 by Jeff D. Newman, this spacious cabin showcases the "saddle and rider" notching technique, reflecting the craftsmanship of the era. As the residence of a cattle ranching family, the cabin features a half loft—once extending the full length of the building—used for storage and children's sleeping quarters. Visitors can observe the loft area, accessible by cleats or ladders, and imagine the challenges of frontier life, including snow seeping through the eaves during winter. Outside, a cast iron pot used for washing clothes and making soap, along with a fence made of yellow jasmine logs, adds to the authenticity. The cabin was generously donated by the Marshall Lake Cattle Company and transported to the museum in 1967, thanks to fundraising efforts by the Women's Club of Phoenix. Dedicated to Nellie T. Exploring Gila Bend AZ: Old Highways, Desert Art & Hidden History | A Casual Adventure Road Trip Cactus Atlas 2025-05-01 | Explore Gila Bend, Arizona—from Cold War jets and the historic Stout’s Hotel to ancient petroglyphs, a 9/11 memorial, and the Gillespie Dam Bridge along old Highway 80. A short trip, full of surprises.Just off State Route 85 near the northern entrance to Gila Bend, a pair of Cold War-era jets catch your eye—two RF-101C Voodoo reconnaissance aircraft, posed like museum pieces in the open desert. Once tasked with flying deep into enemy territory to gather intelligence, today they mark the start of a surprisingly rich detour through Arizona’s past.Roll into town and you’ll find the historic Stout’s Hotel, its thick adobe walls still standing strong after more than a century. Built in the 1920s, this two-story landmark was once a major stop for travelers heading west on Highway 80, back when it was one of the main cross-country routes before the interstates took over. Right next door is a small 9/11 Memorial Park—quiet, shaded, and anchored by a steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center. It's a poignant contrast to the dust and heat just beyond its borders.East of town lies one of the area’s most fascinating archaeological treasures: the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site. For over a thousand years, Native peoples—including the Hohokam and Patayan—left behind intricate rock carvings here, covering massive boulders with symbols, figures, and mysterious shapes. The site offers a glimpse into a cultural legacy far older than the highways and railroads that followed.Speaking of roads, a little detour south takes you along a remnant of Historic U.S. Route 80—once known as the “Broadway of America.” It winds its way toward the Gila River, where the impressive Gillespie Dam Bridge still stretches across the dry riverbed.
