CLARIFICATION: One of the comments pointed out that molecules do have weight, and my correction suggested that they don't. Of course they do, but in this context Rennick was referring to CO2 molecules (he wrongly called them 'atoms') colliding with other molecules of N2 and O2, and passing on energy according to Newton's 3rd law. In this case it is not the weight that passes on energy, it is mass. That's what the 'm' stands for in Newton's Third Law. The reason physicists use mass and not weight is that weight varies. In interstellar space weight is effectively zero, and even on Earth weight varies depending on your location. If Rennick had submitted a test paper to my old physics teacher, he would have been marked down for referring to 'weight' and not 'mass' in Newton's Laws of Motion.

CORRECTIONS: 1) At around 15:00 I give the atmospheric content of CO2 as 32 billion. This is actually our annual contribution. The total is much higher, around 3,290 billion tonnes -- i.e. 3.3 trillion tonnes.
2) At 23:00 I say the rise in CO2 is shown in red. I should have said 'shown in blue.' Temperatures are shown red, CO2 blue.
3) The link between CO₂ and global temperature was first published in 1856 by Eunice Newton Foote, not Arrhenius. Arrhenius quantified it.
4) Spencer doesn't give a time period for the ‘natural air conditioning system’ he ‘feels' (yes, he does use the word 'feel') it will kick in some time and cool things down again. So I was wrong to say 'soon.'
5) Ljunqvist’s reconstruction was for NH temperatures, so I should not have added in _global_ temperatures and compared them to the medieval Warm Period. It's a shame I didn't spot this mistake sooner (my thanks to bacchusevokution for pointing it out), because the NH temperatures are higher still.

CO2 driving warming at the end of the last glaciation: 'Timing of Atmospheric CO2 and Antarctic temperature changes across Termination III' - Caillon et al, 2003 'CO2 climate relationship as deduced from the Vostok ice core' - Barnola et al, 1990 A poster pointed out that a paper 'Earth’s radiative imbalance from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present' by Baggenstos et al (2019) does quantify the contributions of various forcings, and that the loss of albedo (reflectiveness from ice) is a greater contributor to deglaciation than CO2. It could be argued that since the rise in CO2 and greater insolation triggered the melting of ice in the northern hemisphere (where most albedo was lost), CO2 can still be regarded as the main cause. Tricky one that! On one hand, if someone argues that this still makes CO2 the cause, then it remains the primary driver even during ice ages, which constitute just 1% of the Phanerozoic (there's no doubt it's the primary driver for the other 99%.) If, however, one argues that albedo is the main driver, then the fact that the current rise in CO2 is causing a huge loss in albedo should be a major concern.

1) 13:01 – I said ‘kilometers an hour’ instead of ‘miles an hour.’
2) As expected, someone corrected my understanding of the torque required to stop the Earth's rotation. The formulaa I used is for a uniform sphere, whereas the Earth has a much denser center and a lighter crust. So the torque would be slightly less than I calculated. But in non-scientific terms, still a shitload.
3) Another poster wrote: "The unit of torque is Nm [Newton-meter] not Nm/s."
4) @anttibra, a physics teacher from Finland, corrected my calculation. On the basis that he knows better then me, I'm happy to lay it out here. He wrote: Torque is calculated by this equation: M=F x r, where x is vector product. If force is plumb compared to distance of rotating axis, then you can use simple multiplication. Angular momentum is L=J*w, where J=moment of inertia (similar to mass in rotation) and w=angular velocity. Assuming Earth is uniform sphere (it's not, but this is simplified math), then J=2/5*Mr^2=9,721052869650016e37 kgm^2 Since Earth rotate once every 23h 56min 4,10 seconds, then angular velocity w=2*pi/(86164,1 s)=7,292*10^-5 1/s. Now we get Earth's angular momentum L=7,08870359707824214497e33 kgm^2/s. When we want to stop the Earth, we must apply torque over time. delta L=M*delta t, delta t = time we apply torque. If the Earth stops in 10 hours, then delta t= 36000 seconds. M=L/t=7,08870359707824214497e33 kgm^2/s / (36000 s) = 1,96908433252173392916e29 Nm. How much is this? Well, if we apply force on the equator, the required force would be: M=F*r F = M/r = 1,96908433252173392916e29 Nm / (6 378 140 m) = 3,08723912068680513309e22 = 31e21 N = 31 ZN = 31 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 N.
Another poster added: "You have this line as part of your corrections: 'Since Earth rotate once every 23h 56min 4,10 seconds, then angular velocity w=2*pi/(86164,1 s)=7,292*10^-5 1/s.' The units are in radians per second, but the unit written have been written as rotations per second (Hz or 1/s).

People often tell me that the scientific method is flawed, pointing to peer-review and retracted papers as weaknesses. They turn instead to YouTube amateurs like Rosbon. But peer review is fact-checking. Papers are retracted because science endeavours to correct mistakes. This is where whale deaths go down, but wind farm activity goes up. But no such relationship exists. There is no correlation at all, either positive or negative. That's why I said 'There's no correlation.' I did not mean there's no positive correlation or I would have said so. You scan see the complete lack of correlation very clearly in the graphs shown. And since I am still getting messages from people who think there's a negative correlation, I'll give you the dates. Whale deaths went up from 2015 to 2017 when there was NO wind farm activity at all. That is not a correlation, either positive or negative. There is a negative correlation between 2017 and 2019. Then from 2019 to 2022 there is a decline in whale deaths when we are told there is "lots and lots" of wind activity, but no trend. No trend means no correlation, either positive or negative. So five years of NO correlation and two years of a negative correlation means that for the time period looked at -- 2015 to 2022 -- there was no correlation.

A few things to note: Shellenberger's video says that people with links to the wind industry are responsible for all whale necropsies (animal autopsies) along the East coast. I checked this, and it's not correct. The three people in question, Allison Deperte, Sammy Choo and Paul Tonna, do indeed have links to the wind industry and are among more than a dozen members of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMSC) Board. But they have no involvement in necropsies, that is handled by qualified marine biologists and vets. Neither does the AMCS handle all the necropsies, other organisations are also involved.)
I didn’t play the sound of a pile driver because that wasn’t mentioned in Shellenberger’s video, but I did show the figure for how loud it is. Pile driving is easily the noisiest part of wind development. But it can be mitigated by starting the pile driving very softly, so that whales in the area are alerted, and slowly move away if necessary.

He wrote a report in 1940 saying an atomic bomb was feasible, and recommended its construction. He became the army liaison with the research team. He was the only member of the team to speak publicly about the program, and he only did so once, at a press conference in 1995. The only recording of that press conference is on an old cassette tape at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ), so when I was in Tokyo a few years ago I made a digital copy for posterity. I am posting it here, to make it available to scholars, historians and anyone else who wants to research the history of the bomb.
The background and summary in this video are based on that press conference, which I attended as a correspondent for New Scientist magazine. But please note an important correction: Suzuki did not, in fact, say that they had succeed in U235-U238 separation 'to a satisfactory degree.' He simply said they did not succeed. I am grateful to a poster, @nickpatella1525, for providing this more accurate transcript from 39:48 on the video:
そういう計算なんかは終わっておりました。We had made such calculations. しかしウラン235を分離するということには成功しておりません。However, the separation of Uranium-235 we did not succeed in. これは二つの方法を日本でやりました。In Japan, we did this with two methods. 一つは、thermal diffusion、熱拡散の方法。The first was the method of thermal diffusion. それからもう一つは遠心分離の方法、centrifugal forceを使った方法。The other was the method of centrifugal separation, a method using centrifugal force. で、えぇ、熱拡散の方法につきましては、予備実験は成功しています。And, uh, so with regards to the method of thermal diffusion, we succeeded in preparatory experiments. 予備実験というのは、例えば窒素とか、あるいは二酸化炭素の同位元素を分離する、そういうことには成功しておりますが、ウランの分離には成功しておりません。 What I mean by preparatory experiments is, for example, the separation of nitrogen or carbon dioxide isotopes, we succeeded in such things as that, but we did not succeed in the separation of uranium.
Other sources are Japanese historians and sources close to Japanese criminal gangs, as well as books I read while stationed in Japan, including the first edition of 'Japan's Secret War' by Robert Wilcox, 'Kempeitai' by Lamont-Brown (about the Japanese Imperial Army's intelligence force). There is also a book on the Imperial Japanese Navy's intelligence force, the Tokkeitai, but decades after the event I can't remember the title, sorry. The summary and background are not as important as the press conference, where you will hear Suzuki's testimony directly. There is a recent movie about Japan`s atom bomb research called Taiyo no ko (太陽の子.) You'll see the same account of events in a few blogs and videos, but be careful -- the blogs and videos are simply copying their info from the movie, which is largely a work of fiction. There are also reports that Japan set off a test atomic bomb just before the end of the war, but there is very little evidence of that.Top CO2 facts How much and how little CO2 is plant food.potholer542023-12-30 | CORRECTIONS: @8:30 - the right hand bar of the chart is labelled "2008 years ago". See my video youtube.com/watch?v=j9-GRugP9pU for details. The charity funds hospitals and affordable health care to villages on the edges of national parks, in return for a pledge not to cut down trees. The pledges are monitored, and the result has been a dramatic decrease in deforestation rates and an increase in the health of the local population. Patients -- mostly from farming families -- can pay for their subsidised treatment with tree saplings or manure. So for them, treatment is essentially free. The manure goes to organic farms that HiH is encouraging, as it teaches local farmers how to farm organically rather than slash-and-burn the forest. As for the tree saplings, HiH volunteers plant these in areas of forest that have been illegally cut. This restores the forest, and HiH receives money for this from people and companies who pay for carbon credits. That money goes towards paying doctors, nurses, dentists, and and keeps the clinics running. CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: A number of people have criticised my representation of singularity, as if it were a real thing rather than a mathematical concept. Others say the idea of singularity has gone out of favor among cosmologists. As I said in the video, I'm not trying to give a full-on physics lecture here, just rebutting the creationist idea that the universe came from 'nothing' or that there were 'particles' inside singularity that 'exploded.' I rebutted both ideas by explaining that the universe did not come from 'nothing', it came from 'something' -- singularity. No, that does not mean singularity is a 'solid object' as someone thought I was saying. It just means it was not nothing. Even a mathematical concept where the laws of physics break down is still 'something.' I also explained that there were no particles in the center of singularity because singularity had no center. It was an infinitely dense point with no space and no time. I do appreciate that the concept of singularity is flawed, because although this is what the mathematics shows (in theory) researchers still don't have the physics to explain it. But although it's out of favor, I have visited numerous university websites, and they still use the singularity model. I also read several physics discussion sites, which all agree that the idea of singularity needs to be refined; but they can't agree how. The best comment I saw was from Paul Matt Sutter, an astrophysicist with Ohio State University, who said: "A singularity is a place of infinite density, and that's not really a thing."
Who was Anne? She was the mother of Mary (you know, as in The Virgin Mary.) The 'immaculate conception' was not the conception of Jesus but the conception of Mary. i.e. born 'without sin.' Please don't blame me, I didn't make it up. But if I was a Christian, I would wonder why we can't all be born that way. Too much trouble?
Physics students are bound to say 'You forgot to mention..." because I've only given the basics here, this isn't a physics course. The information is accurate (except for any corrections you'll see below), but I have kept it simple. So yes, there was deuterium -- a neutron and a proton -- after the Big Bang. And protons on their own, which are hydrogen ions. A lot of the early atoms wouldn't have had electrons. Also, I gave a very scant explanation on why light can't escape a black hole. This is also a huge area of physics that I won't go into. Gravity warps space, and light follows space. If space is warped tightly, as in a black hole, light follows this curvature. Another way of looking at it, from the Newtonian point of view, is that a black hole is so dense that the escape velocity is greater than the speed of light. I suggest that undergraduates shouldn't use this video to revise for physics exams, it's a basic guide in order to understand why creationists got it wrong. There are plenty of good websites explaining these things at undergraduate level. How evolution can make an eye (Nominees for the 2023 Golden Crocoduck award)potholer542023-09-16 | This is the first of three videos introducing nominees for the revived Golden Crocoduck award, for the biggest breach of the 9th Commandment in pursuit of the creationist cause. But oh dear, I seem to have upset Kyle, the second nominee. He now wants to claim his video was an "inside joke," whatever that means. You'll find his retraction here: youtube.com/watch?v=iylS4oIhALo&t=276s At the same time, he posts a lot of other nonsense claims which, I'm guessing he will also claim are an 'inside joke.' In addition to claiming he was joking, Kyle says he took the video down a year ago (September 2022.) This isn't true, because I received his nomination in October 22, and later downloaded it. Unfortunately, taking a video down does not disqualify the nomination.
The Golden Crocoduck award has been revived by popular demand. But instead of one video a month throughout the year, there will be three nominee videos in the lead-up to the award ceremony on October 28. And instead of a public vote, which used to be the norm, I will decide the winner myself. The downsized award is because of increased work commitments, which I announced a few years back when the GC award was suspended.
DONATIONS TO CHARITY: To support this channel, please don't send me money. I prefer people donate to a charity I support called Health in Harmony. RE "I’ve been very busy since the end of the pandemic." We are still technically in a pandemic, because we still fit the technical definition of a pandemic -- i.e. an infectious disease on more than one continent. But as far as my life is concerned -- and the countries where most of my subscribers live -- the pandemic is over. I am fully vaccinated, as are most people I come into contact with. There is still a tiny risk even for vaccinated people, but there's also a risk of dying from seasonal flu. I have visited a dozen countries in the last few months, and not one of them still has restrictions on mask-wearing, social distancing or freedom of movement. Shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, theaters and sports arenas are all open, with no restrictions. I see no difference to life now than before the pandemic. So de facto, yes, the pandemic is over, and I have been back to work -- hence the reason I've been busy. If you are unvaccinated, and therefore vulnerable, then of course the pandemic is still very real. You can still get infected, and you have a much higher chance of dying. But that's your choice. I can't put my life on hold for you. See my videos on vaccination and Covid-19 and get informed. Similarly, if you live in China, or a country where vaccinations are low and there are still restrictions, I'm sorry. There the pandemic is also still very real. But I can't stay home until every single country is over this. In Europe, Australia, North America and many other places, the pandemic is no longer a part of everyday life for the vast majority who are vaccinated.A close look at Roy Spencers claims on global warmingpotholer542022-03-19 | CORRECTIONS: 1:47 GRL paper is 2019, not 2020 2.52 RSS is 5 degrees short of worldwide, N & S latitiudes 10:15 date should be 85mya not 50mya
NOTE: Models don't actually project temperatures in degrees centigrade per decade, they predict the forcing effect of the various feedbacks for a given rise in carbon gas concentration, and the temperature rise per decade is inferred from that. In the case of the 17 models reviewed in the Geophysical Research Letters journal, ten of them accurately predicted the actual CO2 concentration increase and matched actual temperature data. Four matched actual temperature data when their CO2 assumptions were adjusted to match actual CO2 concentration. Two were overestimates, and one was an underestimate.

This video follows on from my video "If ocean levels are rising, why can't we see it?" -- youtube.com/watch?v=WTRlSGKddJE&t=2s -- which looks at the scientific evidence of sea level rise. That video shows how sea level rise is measured, and how it's accelerating. THIS video addresses the question of people are buying coastal property. Ordinarily I wouldn't make a video on this subject, but so many people used it as a rebuttal in the comments section of my last video (maybe they're running out of scientific ammunition) that I really thought it needed to be addressed -- especially since all of the claims were so clearly and factually wrong. So please address your questions about the scientific conclusions to the former video, and your questions about people buying coastal property to this video.

3) Two posters pointed out that Reiss's question to Hansen could be taken to mean 'What would the view be like in 40 years' time if CO2 concentration was NOW double?" In other words, Hansen was predicting sea level 40 years AFTER a doubling of CO2." To be fair to Hansen, that's possible. If so, his prediction will very likely be correct. But it again stresses the need to have these predictions made in peer-reviewed scientific journals, where such ambiguity is eliminated, rather than books.

Sea level at time of CO2 doubling: I couldn't find any studies looking specifically at sea level when CO2 doubles in concentration. So I had to match predictions for when CO2 will double under RCP 4.5 (around 2065) with projections for sea level rise under RCP 4.5 at that time.A clean energy solution embraced by both sides of politicspotholer542021-10-30 | The charity I endorse is called Health in Harmony (see my video youtube.com/watch?v=j9-GRugP9pU.) CORRECTION: 9:32 -- I said 1.8GW as the storage capacity of the new battery. That should be 1.8GWh. It was in the script, I simply misread it. Earlier, Elon Musk mentioned 100 MW for the Hornsdale battery. This is the output of the battery, not the storage capacity.

'You-forgot-to-mention' section Oct 29 2021: To those inevitable and predictable "you forgot to mention..." posts, thanks but I didn't forget to mention anything. So, for example, I didn't "forget to mention" that South Australia has large unpopulated areas and a small population. Because if I had, I would then have had to 'mention' that the amount of land taken up by wind and solar farms is just a tiny fraction of that. And I would have had to mention that sparsely populated areas often have bigger problems than densely populated ones, because grid infrastructure has to spread over a greater distance for less money. I also didn't "forget to mention" that South Australia is a desert state, because it isn't. Some of S.A. is desert, some is semi-arid, some gets plenty of rainfall. I also didn't "forget to mention" that not every country has the kind of sunshine and wind that South Australia does. If I had, then people would have told me I 'forgot to mention' that countries that don't have a lot of sunshine often don't have a lot of wind, and vice-versa. Or that the two largest CO2 producers, China and the USA, have plenty of sunshine and wind. Or that even countries that have neither can still import energy from other countries. I didn't 'forget to mention' that battery and lithium production creates CO2. So does power station and coal production. As more renewable energy is installed, the power needed to make these batteries will increasingly be clean, producing almost no CO2. I didn't "forget to mention" Scott Morrison's recent commitment to nett zero carbon by 2050. If I had mentioned it, then other posters would have told me I "forgot to mention" that there is no plan to go with it. And I would have been told that I "forgot to mention" that there is no change to the government's policy up to 2030. I didn't "forget to mention" that batteries can catch fire. If I had, someone would have told me I "forgot to mention" that oil wells also catch fire. So do coal mines. So do power stations and oil refineries. I can't write a list of everything that catches fire. One thing that has not caught fire is the Hornsdale battery. If it ever does, I'm sure they'll put the fire out and rebuild it, just as they do with oil wells. I didn't "forget to mention" that the Business Council of Australia has also just reversed-course on renewable energy and called for a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 , after saying a few years ago that a 45% reduction would be "economy wrecking." Lots of people and institutions are changing their minds, and I don't have time to mention them all. I chose News International because it was the most significant. I didn't "forget to mention" the fact that birds get killed by wind farms and turbines catch fire. If I had mentioned this, there would have been more posts telling me I "forgot to mention" that birds also get killed by oil spills. And if you think there are things I "forgot to mention" in this list, I haven't "forgotten to mention those either." I'll just sum this up by saying that clearly ape genomes and virus genomes are not comparing like-for-like, the comparison merely highlights the difference that a small genetic difference can make in an organism. The point being made -- which hasn't changed -- is that it would take years to forcibly 'evolve' SARS-Cov2 from RaTG13 in a lab, even if it could be done. Also, for clarification, I am talking about *genetic* differences. I said in the video: "On the second argument, a response paper to Segreto and Deigin pointed out that there's about a 4% *genetic* difference between RaTG13 and SARS-Cov-2. That may not sound like much, but there's only a 1% genetic diference between humans and chimpanzees." This refers to the number of differences between the genes of one species or organism and another.

SOURCES: A number of people asked why there is no source for my claim that China censors the media. I've been reporting out of China for 30 years, and I guess I take it for granted that the things I experienced first-hand are now well known, even by those who have never been working journalists there. So here are a few sources, starting with the Reporters Without Borders ranking of countries in terms of press freedom, which ranks the PCR (China) 177th out of 180: rsf.org/en/ranking The 2021 RSF report says: "[S]tate and privately-owned media organizations are all strictly controlled by the Communist Party. By making extensive use of the latest technology, President Xi Jinping has succeeded in imposing a social model based on the control of news and information and the surveillance of citizens. Of the 100-plus journalists and bloggers now in prison, some held in life-threatening conditions, at least three journalists and three political commentators have been arrested in connection with the pandemic. The government has also tightened its grip on social networks, censoring many key words linked to coronavirus. The crackdown on foreign correspondents has been tightened with 16 being expelled since the start of the year." The pledges are monitored, and the result has been a dramatic decrease in deforestation rates and an increase in the health of the local population. Thanks to your generous contributions, the founders are spreading the idea to other countries. See psmag.com/social-justice/save-the-trees-well-save-your-life-46121 for an explanation of their work.
CORRECTIONS: 1) @24:40 I said SARS-Cov-2 "shares most of its DNA....." I should have said "gene sequence" not "DNA". SARS-Cov-2 is an RNA-based virus.
2) One poster who says he works in a lab that handles viruses says they're typically stored at around -80 decC, not -23 degC. I can't verify that, but either way I can confirm that they are deep frozen, and not likely to leak out of their sealed containers.
3) At 19:59 I said "the fact this virus wasn't engineered..." I should have said: "The fact that this study shows the virus wasn't engineered....'

CORRECTIONS: 1) Dr. Li Wenlian didn't put his first post on Weibo, as I reported, but on a private forum. It was therefore only circulated among health professionals. To call him a "whistleblower" may therefore be a misnoma. 2) The Wuhan market was closed for renovation AND sanitation. I missed the latter. 3) 3:08 -- One of the reasons SARS-Cov-2 was far more deadly is that, unlike the flu, there would be no natural immunity. Just to be clear, that refers to populations. There are always a few individuals who are immune to any new pathogen.
SOURCES: I usually give my sources in chronological order and time-stamp each, so it can be easily referenced from the videos. However, this normally takes a couple of days, and the situation with the coronavirus is changing so rapidly that I would have to re-make the video after even that short period of time. Already I have had to change a segment about re-opening for business after POTUS first said he want to re-open the country for business by Easter, then within days shifted that to the end of April. So I will just have to copy and paste all my sources, as is. And since I have no time to write out publications, dates, authors and titles of scientific papers, you will have to get these directly off the screen. If details are not visible, just put the title of the paper into Google Scholar. Thanks for your understanding

Nothing new? This video looks at what fire chiefs and scientists say is the REAL cause of the 2019-2020 fires in Australia, in response to amateur theories proposed by media commentators and bloggers. -- Potholer54
CORRECTIONS: 1) The pronunciation of Bourke rhymes with 'Turk' not 'torque.'
2) The police report on the screen shows 53 legal actions for failing to comply with the fire ban, I accidentally said 57 in the voiceover.
3) One poster has commented: "You said that 83% of hazard reduction burns have been carried out. But that was referring to all bushfire protection works mentioned, not just hazard reduction. The hazard reduction percentage is 76%." I have not had time to verify this.
