A really lax event hosted by the AMV Sashimi server, we were asked to edit a vid in around 2 hours (and I took closer to 3.5 cuz I edit slow and I wasted like 20 minutes finding the hand shot at 0:28 which I NEEDED), then another participant was randomly given your video with no audio and without knowing who made it, and was asked to make a remix out of it with a theme prompt. Then all the vids were streamed and everyone tried to guess who made what. It's pretty rough, but like joining Project Org Editor, it was a fun challenge to see what I could get done in a few hours. The prompt was to pick one of "The Seven Deadly Sins" to focus on, and when I was doing research for ideas this quote by C.S. Lewis about pride really helped crystallize the concept of Turbo's fatal flaw for me,“Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man... It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition is gone, pride is gone.”So once I had that as a core concept to build around it made it a lot easier to fill up the timeline, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I didn't have a lot of time to edit that week, so I made a short self-indulgent video I titled "Untapped Potential" that spoke to my own childhood joys and struggles of being artistic. It's a struggle to put your feelings and passions into something material, it's a struggle to share that and hear the opinions and interpretations of others, and it's a struggle to work at it again and again to improve, which is only compounded by all the academic and social pressures that come with being a kid already. But it's worth it to experience the wonders of making art. We got a week off after round 3 so I wanted to take advantage of my renewed energy to do something fast-paced. The round theme was to make a video that embodies one or more of the 18 types of Pokémon so I went with Electric type, my main goal being to show how Miko herself embodies "electric" in every sense of the word. Out of all the techs she's the one most able to fully integrate her mind and body into any game she plays, which can lead to pushing her limits too hard at times. I considered overworking one of the sections with different clips but ultimately decided to just touch up the special effects, I'm pretty happy with it anyway. It was a great source to work with and a good opportunity to try some new techniques and effects I'd never done before. Also in my heart this doubly counts as the video I would have made for POE 2020's "Gadgets and Gizmos" round had I discovered the series back then. Family Tree「Tarzan/Tangled AMV」 PerkyPastry 2023-02-06 | So round 2 of Project Org Editor was a doozy! After nearly burning myself out with The Killing Joke I decided I wanted to use the theme of combining multiple media sources with an idea that would require little to no masking to save my energy for the rounds to come. Tarzan holds a special place in my heart as the genesis of my love for music videos, and a few years ago when I was watching it for the umpteenth time I was struck by the visual similarity between Tarzan's parents and the main duo in Tangled. I stored that nugget of an idea away as a fun little headcanon I could hopefully do something with in the future, and it turns out POE was the perfect opportunity to bring it into the light of day with my love of parallel match cuts/fades! XDI drew more than a little inspiration from being surrounded by family photo albums and old home videos as a kid. My mother spent hours compiling genealogical trees with branches that went back hundreds of years. I was fascinated by seeing my parents, grandparents etc. in a stage of their life that I had never known them in, breathing life into people and points in time now long gone. I can't count the number of times I would be surprised to see a piece of myself staring back at me within a smile, a hand gesture, a spoken phrase, an activity of interest. From time to time I still think of the large and small ways I unconsciously take after my parents, the unanswerable question of how much is nature and how much is nurture within these echoes through time. And with the help of @thefanvideoer2 (thanks again for the recommendation! 💖) I was able to use an awesome song that I could build a video off of to capture those feelings in a way that also didn't betray the important familial themes present in the original material. This was an idea I'd had for a few years since I first came across the song on Spotify, and it being the first round I wanted to take advantage of my high energy levels to test my limits and see just how much editing I could do in a week. After about 45 hours of work, the result was pretty close to what I had envisioned in my head, and it ended up getting the highest score of Round 1 out of 47 entries.Only a handful of minor things have been changed from the POE version. Fictional robots are my kryptonite, and it's rare to find a piece of media with a fairly believable depiction of a romantic relationship where in the absence of shared emotion there is a healthy abundance of care and reciprocity, so I thought the refrain for Metro Station's "Shake It" captured this reciprocity nicely. This took about 6 hours, part of which was spent refamiliarizing myself with Sony Vegas. Limitless Love | How to Train Your Dragon MV PerkyPastry 2020-12-31 | How to Train Your Dragon is the greatest love story ever told, change my mind.Ten years ago, 14-year-old me sat in a dark theater and watched Dreamworks’ newest animated feature. I lost myself in the world of dragons and vikings as I watched two outcasts form an inseparable bond while soaring and tumbling through the sky. I watched how they defied the gravity of their limitations and gave each other a better life through the power of that bond of love. The music, the action, the raw emotions, it was all just so... beautiful. I went back to the theater 4 more times just to experience it all over again.When the final Project Org Editor theme of “Dynamic Duo” came out, I wanted to use a duo that was special to me, but I hadn’t anticipated what that would entail. Because when I started editing, I was overcome with a decade’s worth of emotions for this franchise. How much I resonated with Hiccup’s internal struggles, getting to grow up alongside the two of them, and the fact that it was coming up on the 1 year anniversary since I lost a Toothless of my own. It actually became difficult to edit and I had to take multiple breaks to recompose myself each day, but it was well worth it to finally make a tribute to a story that I hold so dear.Will there ever be another franchise that wholly moves me like How to Train Your Dragon does? It’s difficult to imagine, but I hope so. We’ve had 10 years of watching these two fly together, grow together, love together.
