In this video, I’m cutting 12-inch wide board and batten siding from sawmill lumber. Since some of these logs are getting pretty heavy, I’m testing out a new-to-me trick I saw on YouTube: using a farm jack from Harbor Freight as a log turner.
It’s all about working smarter, not harder, to save my back while getting this siding ready. I’ll also show you my process for cleaning up dirty logs before they hit the mill and how I treat the fresh-cut lumber to prevent mildew.
If you're considering a sawmill like this one, don't forget to check out my full review at the end of the video!

I added two track extensions, which brought my total track length to 26 feet. We ordered the mill on a Monday and it showed up that Friday.
Assembly took a few days, and my plan was to set the track on concrete blocks temporarily, mill some lumber, and then set the track permanently—didn’t work out, so I grabbed pressure-treated lumber to build the base. One mistake I made was mounting the track directly to the pressure-treated wood (it can cause premature rust/corrosion), so I’ll be coming back to add a non-treated 2x6 spacer between the PT lumber and the footing.
For leveling, I used a level the best I could, then ran a string line from one bunk all the way to the end so I could confirm every bunk was flat and aligned. amazon.com/shop/mississippifamilyhomestead

The saw head is heavy, and assembly took me about 2–3 days. Each bolt size came in its own labeled pouch, the manual was thorough, and the mill went together smoothly.
I’ve seen videos mentioning engine issues, but I haven’t had any problems—mine usually starts on the first or second try. The frame feels solid too (no wiggle or rocking), which is impressive for something that arrived in a crate and had to be assembled.
