Alexander L 2024-12-13 | #socrates #plato #philosophy Where does Socrates end and Plato begin?In this video i am discussing Plato's dialogues and how can we possibly distinguish between Socrates' ideas and Plato's ideas. Socrates never happened to write anything and so it can be difficult to determine what ideas and views can actually be assigned to Socrates and even answer the questions that many have asked before: was Socrates even a real person?Using the sources that describe Socrates and his views ranging from Plato to Xenophon and Aristophanes and his play Clouds, I will attempt to determine who the historical Socrates was and how the character of Socrates from Plato's dialogue differers from that. Furthermore, I will also discuss the evolution of Plato's philosophy from early dialogues, middle dialogues and later dialogues and examine the elenchus and aporia present in Plato's early dialogues which are an integral part of what is often called the Socratic method. The Socratic method took on a new form in the recent years known as street epistemology, a term coined by Peter Boghossion, the author of "A Manual for Creating Atheists" and often used by Anthony Magnabosco. A big theme of this video is discussing to what degree Plato's ideas were inspired by Socrates or fully represent Socrates' thoughts and what ideas of Plato were independent of Socrates. For this reason, I will entertain three possible theories and explanations of the evolution of Plato's philosophy and the themes present in Plato's philosophy such as the theory of forms, the eternal world of ideas, the immortality of the soul and the philosopher king as well as the likelihood of such theories and possibilities being correct and the issues and challenges that comes with those theories. Today individuals such as Peter Boghossian and Anthony Magnabosco take a lot of inspiration from those early dialogues of Plato in their method.Later on Plato moved away from this method in the middle dialogues like Phaedo and The Republic and late dialogues such as Statesmen and Thaetetus by focusing more on the concept of the soul, how society should be run as well as the theory of form. In order to do so, Plato creates the character of Socrates that is very different from the one we see in Plato's early dialogues. Western symphony music is most often called classical music. However, that isn't the case everywhere in the world. For example, In Poland, where I was born, the home of one great Frederic Chopin, people call it serious music, as a means of separating it from both popular music and folk music. But why is that so? Is classical music the only form of serious music? I have listened to a vast array of both progressive rock, jazz and folk music that is serious both in the tone of the music as well as the lyrical content matter. And is classical music always so serious? I find such statement to be far from true. A lot of classical music has a rather non-serious or even humouristic musical tone, such as some of the works of Tchaikovsky or Wagner. But the perfect example of classical music not taking itself so seriously is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. While the portrayal of the character of Mozart in the Amadeus movie is largely exaggerated and portrays him as too juvenile, Mozart was known for scatological humour, or toilet humour, if you prefer. This is reflected in some of Mozart's music such as his composition Leck mich im arsch, meaning lick my ass. A type of relationship philosophy based in the anarchist ideology. More specifically, the wish to reject unfair hierarchy. While in political anarchism this may refer to a societal and economic hierarchy, relationship anarchism is critical towards the established hierarchy present in normative monogamous relationships as well as hierarchical polyamory. Relationship anarchy is not the same as polyamory but it's not necessarily monogamy either. A relationship anarchist can be monogamous, polyamorous but also celibate. The hierarchy refers both to the hiearchy of primary and secondary romantic relationships in polyamory but also to the hierarchy of different types of connection and intimacy, be it platonic, romantic or sexual. Who is relationship anarchism beneficial for? In this video I discuss the group of people who would benefit most from some idea present in relationship anarchy. Those include polyamorous people who don't like the idea of hierarchy, those who have been growing tired of relationships norms or always have been. Such as the norms around how relationships should be formed and what they should look like. Relationships anarchist reject such norms as well as the idea that they should play a script in how people form their relationships. Relationship anarchy can also be beneficial to those who don't believe that their romantic/sexual relationships should be valued more than their platonic relationships with their friends and family. Relationship anarchy emphasises the value of strong platonic bonds. This is especially important for aromantic individuals and other who do not with to engage in romantic relationships but who still want strong bonds in their lives. Sometimes such relationships are called queerplatonic relationships. Asexuals can also benefit from relationship anarchism ideology by allowing their partner to meet their sexual needs elsewhere.Finally, I wish to normalise the concept of part-time relationships. Something that could be of great importance to people who don't want to spend a lot of time with other or who for various reasons, including disability and mental illness are not able to handle the everyday hardship and expectations of normative relationships but who still want connections with people in their lives. The first book we'll be covering is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley published in 1932. Brave New World is a dystopian novel often considered one of the best examples of dystopian literature together with "1984" by George Orwell. In this video I provide a philosophical analysis of the concepts introduced in the first chapter of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Those include the World State present in the dystopian society of this book and its mottot: community, identity and stability. I discuss how stability is achieved through authoritarian measures both in our society and in that of Brave New World and the dislike of individualism in both fascism and communism alike. I also talk about how the authoritarian politics of Brave New World have influenced the reproductive process that takes place in the Centre of Hatchery and Conditioning. I also mention Bertrand Russell and his proposition of world state. I discuss various non-traditional natal methods that are both available today or might be potentially in the future. Those include artificial wombs, in vitro insemination and cloning. I talk about the benefits of ectogenesis and artificial wombs as well as potential challenged or harms associated with it. Towards the end I also entertain the antinatalist perspective on the concept of artificial wombs. In this video we also explore the Bokanovsky's Process described in the first chapter of Brave New World named after Maurice Bokanowski. Bokanovsky's Process is basically cloning applied only to those individuals who are lower in the societal hierarchy in the world of Brave New World and how it eliminates individualism in non-elitist communities. I also briefly discuss the case system in Brave New World which consists of Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas and Epsilons and how this type of system shares similarity with India's caste system. This is a concept I will discuss more in depth in later episodes of this series. I also briefly touch on conditioning and predestining described in the first chapter of Brave New World as well as talk about pantropy. In this video I am doing a short review of the new season of Daredevil - Daredevil Born Again also known as Daredevil season 4. Marvel movies and shows aren't exactly my type of thing in general but I found myself having particular weakness for the Netflix Marvel shows like The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron First and of course Daredevil. Matt Murdock quickly became my favourite fictional lawyer. Unfortunately, I wish I had more positive to say about Daredevil Born again in this interview. I wouldn't say that Daredevil Born Again is bad but it's definitely disappointing. The new cast is forgettable and the lack of presence of Karen Page and Foggy is not only seen but also felt. The season introduces some good ideas but ruins them before they get a chance to become something good. But most of all, in this video I wish to discuss the continuity error regarding the Wilson Fisk or Kingpin timeline that doesn't make sense as a result of mixing a reboot with a continuation of the original story. The book is both a philosophical analysis of everything trans and detrans as well as the story of my own journey as a detransitioner. It is partially a memoir, partially a philosophical essay and partially a horror story. The book also deals with mental health, addiction, depression and trauma and for this reason I believe that even people who have no experience with transition or detransition will be able to find something relatable about it. In this video I talk about what it feels like to get so far in a project like this, talk a bit about the content and stracture of the book and about the next steps in the writing process. I believe that philosophy benefits from the inquiry into scientific studies in order to better apply its methods and that science benefirs from having a more philosophical approach and perspective when it comes to the study of possibility and feasibility in the world of physics and astrophysics. In this review on the go i am reviewing the Like a Dragon: Yakuza Amazon Prime series. A series based on the first game in the Like a Dragon series, also known as Yakuza or Ryu ga Gotoku in Japan. In this video i am comparing the tv series to the first game, Yakuza, which has been remade in 2016 under the name Yakuza Kiwami. The game series has met success in the west with the release of Yakuza 0 and in few months we will see the release of the newest entry, Like a Draon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii I offer my view on how Like a Dragon: Yakuza managed to ruin the characters of Kiryu Kazuma and Haruka Sawamura and reduced crucial characters such as Makoto Date and Goro Majima to minor roles and appearances and on how the tv series failed at capturing the magic and charm of the Ryu ga Gotoku games and instead offered a boring, monotonous and forgettable experience. In this video i discuss my reasons for quitting drinking and how i arrived at the point where I don't want to drink no more. I explain my history with alcohol, the types of craving alcohol can create in an individual as well as my way of using alcohol as an emotional support. A lot of the time when I person is struggling with addiction, wheher drug addiction or alcohol, the reasons for this behaviour are our mental struggle. At the end if the day, this is about mental health. I used to drink most when i was struggling a lot with my depression.This is not meant as an advice video although perhaps some people will be able to relate. My disappearing need for drinking was very gradual and I don't know how common it is but as my mental health improve the need the drink wasn't there anymore. Alexander L 2024-11-10 | #yasuke #ubisoft #history Yasuke the black samurai: truth or myth?In a few months Ubisoft is releasing a new game in the Assassin's Creed franchise - Assassin's Creed Shadows. Assassin's Creed is set in feudal Japan in the Azuchi-Momoyama period or the late Sengoku period. The game stars a black character named Yasuke who was a real historical figure and a first Assassin's Creed protagonist who was an actual historical person. Yasuke arrived in Japan in 16th century and according to the few existing documents that confirm his existence and presence in Japan, Yasuke served under Oda Nobunaga as his retainer and likely a bodyguard. While this portrayal of Yasuke sounds amazing, Ubisoft also made a claim that Yasuke was a samurai, an idea that got warmly embraced by the liberals and progressives. However, the game, which hasn't yet been released, has already received a lot of criticism and has even more controversy surrounding it. Some claim that Yasuke was never actually a samurai and that there is not enough evidence to support the theory of him being Oda Nobunaga's samurai. While those claims and arguments can be dismissed as racism, something that the left likes to do, I think it's a good idea to examine the character of Yasuke and the definition and role of the samurai throughout the Japanese history. For this reason I'm going to explain what samurai were in the different time periods from the Heian period, Kamakura period, Sengoku period, Edo period and the Meiji era and attempt to answer this question: Was Yasuke a samurai? Was it possible for him to become a samurai?I also bring up Thomas Lockley, the co-author of "African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan" which Ubisoft has based their interpretation of Yasuke and the Sengoku period from.
