I'm a huge fan of portable audio devices and when Pecsu sent me their last model, the P5S, I instantly fell in love with it. It's all the best parts of my android phone, minus the cellular connection and monthly bill. I concluded in the review for that model that it was almost perfect in my eyes and just about the perfect android mp3 player in my opinion. A few months have passed and when Pecsu reached out to me to see if I was interested in their new model, the G5, I honestly couldn't have been more excited to see what the next step up would be. In this video we do a quick unboxing and review of the G5 in comparison to the P5S to see what's changed, what's improved, and what's gotten worse.

Ok before you burn me at the stake for yet another bluetooth earbud review just hear me out (get it?)! I think the most used electronic device I own other than my phone is bluetooth earbuds. I literally always have a pair ready to go in my pocket almost 24/7.
So when this company reached out to me to see if I wanted to review their new set I of course obliged. The main differentiating selling point of the Acuity Serena buds is their touted long battery life and super ANC (active noise cancellation).
These were sent to me before they even had the commercial packaging ready so I'll consider these like an early pre-release review sample. Keeping in mind the pre-order for these will you back $70, while their normal price post launch will be $150, let's see if they are worth the hype and earn a spot in my everyday carry kit.

Pew Pew!!! I love lasers and I love cutting so when Flying Bear reached out to see if I wanted to check out their new Laserman laser engraver I was all too happy to play with it. I already have a number of hours of experience with my current Atomstack M40 so let's see if the Laserman makes the cut ... get it? With a handful of new features like wifi/sd cutting, a color touch screen, fire sensor, rotary attachment, and last but definitely not least the built in smoke ventilation/filter I'm excited to see what kind of user experience ~$300 gets you. Is it worth a spot on your bench? Watch to find out.

A huge part of my life is audio, it literally keeps me sane. So when Tiksounds reached out to see if I wanted to check out their new model, the S50 I was of course interested. On paper it looks solid, 6 hour runtime (40 hours with case), IPX7 water proof, and bluetooth 5.3. Let's take a look at what your $20 gets you (the price honestly surprised me for what you are getting).

I've been using my Andonstar AD407 digital microscope for the past 2 years and I cant tell you how many times it's come in handy for inspecting faulty solder joints and in general for reading part numbers off of tiny components. So when Andonstar reached out to me to see if I wanted to check out their new lower priced scope I was definitely keen.
The only major differences I can see between the 207 and 407 is about $100 in price (depending on sales this fluctuates), glossy vs matte lcds, and the former lacking hdmi video output while the latter has a mini hdmi port. Other than that they both have very similar features including recording hd video/pics to micro sd, 7" hd lcds, ir remotes, adjustable led lighting, and solid metal construction. So let's see what this ~$150 digital microscope can do and if it's worth going for the lower or higher end models.

I'm loving these android based portable mp3 players! So when AGPTEK offered to send me their new model I of course got excited. In a nutshell, this is basically what iPod Touches are to iPhones but in the android ecosystem (a modern smartphone without the phone). Seriously, I really hope companies like AGPTEK keep improving the formula and coming out with new models!

I have a pretty big problem when it comes to my laptop. It has 3 type-c ports ... and no other connectivity for data! This has meant that up to now I have had to carry a bunch of different type-c dongle adapters to interface with all manner of usb devices or hdmi displays. It gets really irritating when I need more than two things plugged in as I cant charge via the ac adapter in that case! I usually have to resort to a messy dongle and hub centipede monstrosity in those situations with multiple points of failure.
So when CableCreation reached out to send in one of their portable hub/dock solutions I was keen on seeing how well it would work for my situation. While this is certainly not the cheapest solution out there for usb hubs coming in around $50, if this works and solves my dongle infestation problem it'll be well worth it in my book.

Hope you guys like wireless bluetooth earbud reviews because I happen to have a few upcoming! I was contacted by KO-STAR to check out their new T10 model and the timing was great because my Mom's set I gave her are on their last legs after about a year of heavy use so these will be going to her. The catch is she hates the sealing kind so this pair that just sits loosely in your ears should fit the bill. Let's see what your $30 gets you (or $20 if you use the coupon available at the time of this upload).

So I think android based mp3 players have the potential to be among the best standalone audio players, offering the best flexibility/expandability/performance when compared to conventional players with much more rudimentary os's. When Pecsu reached out to show off their new model I was very keen to review it, so huge thanks for them sending one in for us to take a look at. At $80 for the upgraded P5S model, it's not a cheap player but given the spec list this should be quite capable! So lets give it the full run through and see how it performs in some real world testing!

I absolutely love my 30W poweradd powerbank (it's still going strong after about a year of heavy use). Unfortuantely it looks like that model is no longer being manufactured though. So when poweradd offered to send in their new model, a solar powerbank, I was happy to test whether the 4 onboard foldout solar panels would be practical and if it would live up to its 26,800mAh rating. So let's take a look at what your $50 gets you (well I guess $20 with the code above while supplies last).

So I'll begin with the fact that I'm generally skeptical of solar powerbanks, there's more than a few articles and videos online about how practically useless they are given the relatively low efficiency of consumer small solar panels. However I thought I'd give this guy a chance and see if it would at least make a good emergency flashlight that happens to be able to charge a phone or two at the same time. Upon receiving it though, I was surprised by how light it was compared to the rated capacity. So let's actually put it through some tests to see if you are getting what you pay for.

Let's see what the usable transmission distance is as well as if the latency and quality are suitable for playing games.

Thanks to Apexel for kindly sending in this tech for review. In a past video I took a look at a 2nd hand analog NV monocular and I was fascinated with how it worked. In this video we explore a modern digital counterpart. Let's see what your ~$200 (currently on sale at $180) gets you and how practical it'd be to use for the intended hunting/outdoors applications. As a bonus at the end of the video we tear it down to see what goodies are inside!

I absolutely love the powerbank VRURC sent in about a year ago, it's earned a permanent place in my backpack as an everyday carry. It's come in handy more times than I can count and its convinced me that the things it gets oh so right (built in cords with several plugs and ac charging prongs) should be a part of every modern powerbank! So when they offered to send in their newest model I was keen. Let's see what's changed and what's stayed the same for this model and if it earns its pricepoint.

I was contacted by Exprotrek, a manufacturer of action cams, to see if I wanted to check out their new model. This tiny guy differs in a few ways from previous actions cams I've reviewed, the most noticeable being the dual front and rear facing screens. Let's see what your ~$110 gets you and if it can live up to the 4k hype!

In this video we take a look at how VFDs (Vacuum Fluorescent Displays) work and most importantly how to test/drive them. I demonstrate using a 16 digit 14 segment tube I pulled from a credit card pos machine I tore down in a past video. We also take a close look at the venerable IV-22 tube and talk about my plans for 8 of them.
Design files for the VFD Experimenter Demo'd in this video will be posted here soon.

So I've been busy learning the in's and out's of my new laser engraver. While browsing online I came across some beautiful Japanese paper and wood lanterns and knew exactly what I wanted my first big project with my laser to be. In this video we take a look at the design, process, failures and final resulting lamp.

AGPTEK was kind enough to send in this mp3 player for me to review. Long time viewers of the channel will know that I'm a long time fan of dedicated mp3 players. And in timely fashion, just in time for the discontinuation of the last ipod model, I take a look at a dedicated mp3 player in 2022 where many would just reach for a smart phone and stream music. So how does this model stack up in real world use? Is it compelling enough to warrant shelling out the $44 price of admission? Watch to find out!

I know it's been awhile since the last video I made on this project. Sometimes you start a project with so much energy and then just get bogged down with life and other projects till your enthusiasm just wanes. I spent quite a bit of time trying to design a really fancy 3D printed case for the VacPen that I could see the feature creep starting to loom so I decided to just go simple and functional so I could wrap this project up and use it. So this version is more a prototype than a finished commercial looking device. The case could use some screws, integrated pcb mounting to utilize the onboard touch sensing pad and most importantly a better battery enclosure method. But I just wanted something done now to help assemble pcbs that will arrive very soon so let's wrap this project up and leave improvements for version 2.0!
Check out the design files on the project page here: hackaday.io/project/185300-vacpen

In this video we take a look at a wifi camera Vimtag kindly sent in for review. Given the $30 pricetag I'll be honest I had pretty low expectations but the onboard SD card slot alone gives this model a huge leg up compared to other big brand models that lock you to their cloud subscriptions. Let's see the image quality, how painless/painful using the app is, and generally what you are getting for your hard earned $30.

In my recent projects moving to the Attiny series of microcontrollers, I've found a need to be able to reset chips I've accidentally "bricked" through incorrect fuse settings that prevent low voltage serial programming. So in this video we take a look at a pcb I designed based on work by Paul W (rickety.us/2010/03/arduino-avr-high-voltage-serial-programmer) and Jeff Keyzer (mightyohm.com/blog/2008/09/arduino-based-avr-high-voltage-programmer/). Huge thanks to Paul and Jeff for their software and hardware which this project wouldn't be possible without.
In this project I've added to the design to make the unit standalone by utilizing an OLED display for status info and also integrating an interrupt based closed loop PID compensator and boost converter to generate the 12V high voltage required to reset attiny chips. This way, my board is completely standalone and only requires a 5V usb power supply to operate.
Board files, modified software and detailed writeup available on the Hackaday.io project page here: hackaday.io/project/184867-attiny-high-voltage-fuse-reset-er.

I've worn a watch on my left wrist almost every day since middle school. It's sort of a ritual by this point where something just feels off on the rare day that I don't have one on. I've had everything from digital rough and tough, stylish analog mechanical, and even a smart bluetooth model.
So when Boean contacted me to see if I wanted to test out their new model I was of course interested. First, let's get it out of the way, this is no $300+ apple or samsung cutting edge smart watch. This is a low/midrange model situation somewhere between being part timepiece and part exercise logging companion. The feature set is reflected in the $60 pricetag (which is currently on sale for $50 as of the video upload date).
So with all that in mind let's put it through the paces just as any of my other watch's have had to endure. The questions at the top of my list I intend to find out are: How's the included app, is it necessary to use the watch with the app, how's battery life, how well do the advertised features work? Watch to find out my thought's on all these and more.

In this video we cut the cord ... to my new Atomstack laser engraver! I can already hear the cord aficionados grabbing their pitchforks but just hear me out. I like to run the laser outside where all the nasty fumes can dissipate instead of stinking up my house but the big problem is that means I either need a ridiculously long usb cable or just leave my laptop outside with the engraver, at the mercy of the elements. So I figured it would be nice to be able to run the engraver outside while having the host computer safely sitting by the window connected wirelessly. So let's take a look at the little pcb I've designed to enable this, how it's attached to the laser engraver mobo, along with the necessary software steps to get everything working. In the end we run a quick little test, demonstrating the now wire free laser engraver operating.

In this video we take a look at a new usb charger kindly sent in by Kovol. But the catch is that this charger isn't quite like conventional ones on the inside. It uses a new semiconductor technology called GaN which allows higher switching speeds, higher efficiency and higher power density than mosfets. So let's see just how small it is and how much power I can pump out of it.

We do a quick unboxing, teardown and then boot it up. Now the burning question I have when looking at how small and low power this little guy is ... can it emulate Playstation 2 games?!?! In this video we take a look a the starting point in the process of designing a vacuum pickup tool to help me wrangle those miniature mosfets, those tiny transistors, those little LEDs, those micro ... microcontrollers. I think you get the point anyway, alliteration aside, Let's see what components I plan to use, the pcb I designed to control everything and finally give it a test run.

Eksa was kind enough to send me another of their products to review. This time they are a pair of quite alien looking tws bluetooth earbuds (apparently they were going for the cobra look but I just cant get alien out of my head lol). Let's give them a run through and see how they hold up.

iPazzPort kindly sent in another of their wireless keyboards for review. I use these little wireless usb keyboards nearly everyday, for everything from navigating my android tv box to search content, to configuring raspberry pi's and even on occasion to control powerpoint presentations! So it's not exaggeration to say I absolutely love how useful they are. Well this guy is one of the cheapest I've seen and from a brand that I've been very happy using in the past so let's see if this $17 wireless keyboard earns its keep in my edc backpack.

In this video we take a look at a recent project of mine that's been in development for quite awhile (mostly waiting for parts to arrive from overseas). If you are a fan of the channel you know I'm no stranger to making and programming my own custom displays. So in this video we take a look at two such displays I've designed just in time for the new year! I really hope these displays don't end with a bang like the year's end.
