Conservation Outcomes Webinar: Effects of Forest Management on Embedded Wetlands TheUSDANRCS 2023-05-18 | Wetlands provide a suite of ecosystem services, including fish and wildlife habitat, microclimate regulation, nutrient and sediment capture and storage, water storage to reduce flooding, and carbon storage with resulting benefits for climate change mitigation. The scope of these services may be significantly affected by surrounding land cover, including variations in forest density and canopy leaf area. On May 11, 2023, Dr. Katie Glodzik and Dr. Esther Lee from the University of Florida School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatic Sciences presented on a new model-based tool and associated findings on the influence of upland forest management on wetland and landscape-scale hydrologic functions. Findings may be used to inform management practices that increase water yield, improve wetland functions, and support targeted wetlands restoration efforts in the future. While the focus of this presentation is on geographically isolated wetlands in Coastal Plain pine forests of the southeastern United States, trends may be leveraged to inform management of a diversity of wetlands landscapes.This webinar is part of the NRCS Conservation Outcomes Webinar Series. Conservation Outcomes Webinar: Science Informs Managing Working Lands for Lesser Prairie-Chickens TheUSDANRCS 2023-03-31 | On June 23, 2022, Dr. David Haukos of Kansas State University presented findings of recent studies and shared how these findings inform incorporation of managed livestock grazing, prescribed fire, tree removal, and strategic placement of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) tracts into working landscapes to benefit lesser prairie-chickens. Lesser prairie-chicken populations have significantly declined since the mid-late 1980s due to factors including habitat loss, increased presence of anthropogenic features, drought, encroaching invasive woody and herbaceous plants, and reduction in quality of remaining habitat. Heritage Lane Farm High Tunnel TheUSDANRCS 2022-10-14 | Kevin Swope of Heritage Lane Farm in Columbiana, Ohio uses high tunnels funded through NRCS to supplement his grazing operation. He and his wife Sarah take their produce and meat products to the Shaker Square Market in Cleveland. Kevin says that using the produce grown from the high tunnels has both generated more interest in their market stand and extended their market season. He offers a few technical tips to anyone interested in constructing a high tunnel.
