I feel you. Salads are one of the most tricky subjects to style. There's so much going on, it's like everything gets lost, and is too much all at once.
Here's a tip you can start using RIGHT NOW to help your salad photos look more cohesive and styled 💁♀️
Cut your ingredients in a variety of different shapes and sizes. This could be as simple as cutting on a diagonal rather than just chopping it up randomly.
These different shapes will help differentiate the ingredients on your plate from each other *and* give you more options for creating leading lines in your composition. WIN WIN!

You've got the perfect dish, you've got your camera, you've got your lights. You're all set.
But then you look at your props and backgrounds and your heart sinks. 😔
Nothing seems to fit. You've bought so many over the years, but somehow, they just don’t seem right.
And thought of spending even *more* money on props? Ouch. 💰
I've been there too. But I discovered the best props and backgrounds were already in my collection, I just didn’t know how to use them properly.
So here’s an exercise for you, if you’re feeling stuck and unmotivated.
1️⃣ Grab your camera 📷
2️⃣ Pull out all your props and backgrounds. Yes, even that plate you never use. 🍽️
3️⃣ Mix and match, and take some test shots. You'll be surprised what works!
Don't let props and backgrounds get in your way. You probably already have the answer on your shelf 😉

It’s not having the right tools.
Because trying to do the job with the wrong tools, is like trying to cut grass with a pair of nail scissors.
And I’ll let you in on a little secret 🤫...
The answer to better food styling is really quite simple.
Most of the tools I use for food styling as a food photographer, are everyday things that are affordable, easily available and simple to use. But the difference the right tools make is MASSIVE.
Over the next few weeks, I'm sharing a food styling series, with some epic food styling tutorials and behind the scenes, but I'm kicking off with my favourite food styling tools. So keep an eye out this week for my favourites!
