Super Mario Sunshine - The Yoshi-Go-Rounds Secret Speedrun (3297)
updated
01:25 Reminder that switching sides STILL saves time, but I've never seen anyone else do it.
03:05 Ok this is really stupid. There really is a zone in which you get booted out of the lizard. It's so bad in fact that if he survives the fall and you try capturing him again, you just get thrown out on the first possible frame. You don't get to do anything. So I just assumed that left/right wouldn't be any good either. I guess next time I should actually TRY shit out.
03:40 Thanks to Kugihot Entorus (youtube.com/channel/UC5hRfb7Mxq9TxgaEe5tdrPw) , I was able to save a bit over half a second here. It's interesting how you can easily lose more than a second here, even though it looks like a section you can only do in one way.
04:18 You seriously lose 5+ seconds if you don't climb up this way.
So um, you can kinda skip everything that comes before the Multi-Moon now (youtube.com/watch?v=fwnF-OcNZqE) . I guess this means no one will want to optimise this level further. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
I wonder if sub 5 is possible with more tricks and skips?
Some things I want to comment on:
00:40 As far as I can tell, you can only motion control jump into the first pit as a fireball. Only the slow jumps make it to the other holes.
Also I get damaged here, but sometimes you have to move so awkwardly to dodge the spikes that it wastes even more time. Getting hit really doesn't matter either way.
00:58 This section can have different platform cycles. I don't quite understand it myself, but I think it depends on your camera before you jump into the cannon. Look at the platforms early and they already start moving before you get there, something like that. I get a good cycle here.
01:15 Making the cycle here is pretty tight. You can see how I just barely don't get hit. This saves more than a second over getting hit.
01:30 You actually save time switching sides because you gain a little bit of height everytime you do.
01:45 Ok, get this: I need to throw Cappy down for the next platform skip later. But I can only do that after a ground pound with the controller (maybe I'm just dumb) while I can get the skip way more reliably during a jump. So I actually switch to the Joy-Con for the easier down throw. The best part: I don't lose a single second because I switch while I have to wait for platforms anyway. It's hilarious how it works out like that.
Shoutouts to "Nin Nin" (youtube.com/channel/UCR5bcgm7zjruO4jJcsMjDdQ) for showing me the skip at 02:20, really clever there dude.
02:35 Use motion controls to maintain your height. Also use motion controls as you fly into a whirlwind to gain height as much as I did.
IMPORTANT: The game has an invisible line after which you are forced out of the lizard 03:14 . If you don't get enough height before that, you're a goner.
The fork-flick, auto-scroller platform, bird climb and 8-bit section are all skipped.
04:15 I shake my controller to the side to get the spinning cappy throw and it's handy for capturing objects that are just out of reach for a normal throw.
05:06 Doing what I did actually saves a lot of time over simply climbing even taking the motion controls into account.
There is another moon in there but it breaks the flow too much, so fuck that.
So, this is an example of clever developer design. If the shine was to spawn where it usually does, it would be submerged. I'm not sure if Mario even has an animation for touching a shine while swimming, so they avoided that mess by simply relocating the shine spawn. Considering the very special circumstances of this, I can't help but be impressed by Nintendo right there.
Collecting 100 coins with Delfino submerged is a pain, of course. Yoshi actually comes in handy because he can eat the birds that drop one coin. You can also use the logs to glitch underwater, where you can spray the WANTED posters for coins when you're not supposed to. Link to that glitch is here: youtube.com/watch?v=j4nyGcnQbfA
To retain your coin count, simply collect a shine or enter a green pipe and then exit right away.
As a bonus, I added the extremely unfortunate Pianta, who is on fire but simply can't find any nearby water to extinguish himself....
My ending here was kinda bad. Meant to go for a spinjump at the end as well and missed it.
Coins 7-8 are obtained the way you normally would.
If you get this perfectly, this should save around 2.5 - 3 seconds compared to the usual strat here.
If you want to know how to get 100 coins on Bianco 1, watch: youtube.com/watch?v=tOrC2fD3xxg
(Guy got a 1:20 now in any%. He's pretty boss, consider following him on Twitch http://www.twitch.tv/averagetrey)
German text for good measure.
With a little practise, it's actually very doable.
This movement is pretty dang tricky though. Jumping off the bridge too late can kill you a lot easier than you'd think. Oh, and those white mushrooms aren't just there for decoration purposes. If your control stick input isn't just right during the waterslide, they will cockblock you.
Overall this is too tricky to pull off and bother with really, but hey I saw Toobou do it in his runs so I was like why not document it. He got the idea from the 1:09 TAS I'm pretty sure.
Italian text sure saved my ass there haha. Anyway, I'm pretty satisfied with this run. It doesn't have too many mistakes that stick out like a sore thumb and there isn't a stage where I can save like close to a minute or something. Gonna see whether I can push this time much lower in the future I guess.
Other than that, this appears to be kinda useless because you have to, you know, exit the stage.
Turns out Italian text is the fastest text there is, beating English by a whooping 11 seconds. Even Japanese can't keep up with that. As for other languages, German and French are certainly not faster. I tested Spanish as well, and it was also slower than Italian. So yeah, if you have the PAL version, go save those 11 seconds for free now.
The English video is Samuraiman's 1:31:08. Of course, that run is outdated now but the only thing that interested me was his text mashing. Samuraiman mashes quit fast, so I knew I should use his footage for the comparison. The Italian footage was recorded by me.
Notice how when the screen fades out, Mario is clearly not even holding the shine anymore. Maybe the roulette is pushing him away or something.
Just about everything about this is glitchy and weird. They clearly didn't try too hard with this.
I never thought I'd say this, but....this is a thing.
If you look at my previous video, it's obvious I was playing on the Japanese version, which freezes. EDIT: The US version also has this fix, there was just a little confusion going on.
Then again, they created 100 shine spots for other impossible episodes, so why not this secret? I guess they didn't feel the need to because not a single yellow coin is supposed to be obtainable here.
I think it's pretty safe to say they didn't expect too many players to reach this place because of DEM PHYSICS.
Welp, this wasn't easy to figure out how to do, let me tell you.
The platform at 0:14 just barely gives you enough space to get another spin jump dive in. You have to hold back on your control stick before you land on it though, or else your dive will go too far. Can't hold back on your control stick too early, either, because then you bonk and die.
The jump off the red thing is very precise. You have to execute the dive at just the right timing or else you'll just fall.
The part at 0:22 is very, very precise and has strict timing. If you're even 0,1 seconds behind were you should be, the rolling log will halt your momentum and kill the attempt. Your movement needs to be spot on up until this part.
The rest is not that easy, but easier than what came beforehand. Doing a spinjump dive at a pretty sharp angle is the key to save time at the end.
If done optimally, this strat saves 2 seconds over the usual one.
Enjoy.
Turns out I just can't grab this thing. The loading zone was placed so that even if you reach impossible heights, it stops you right before you can touch it.
This is probably a wasted effort here and the game just crashes if you grab that shine or something.
What we need to test this is some kind of speed modification that lets Mario just sonic speed from point A to B. That's the only way how we can touch the shine before the game stops us dead in our tracks.
Apparently, King Boo is already loaded but not visible. Going to him at the beginning like that makes him spawn 2 seconds earlier.
Perhaps not quite as impressive as the insane Shell Secret strat, but still quite impressive nonetheless. The key is to hold back the control stick so that you don't bonk on the wall. The rest is just whether your initial angle is good or not.
This strat is about tied with stelzig's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzOzwBEyeLQ in terms of speed and about one second faster than the usual method. However, the method shown here earns you lots of style points!
As always, enjoy.
This strat was found by Toobou (トーボウ).The sheer act of pulling this guy's chain makes him speed up. This is very useful for the times he goes to the middle and right. I don't think it could be very useful when he goes to the left because there's no time for you to mess around, really.
When I timed the time save for the middle route, it turned out to be 4 seconds. Just insane.
This ending strat saves about 2 seconds when compared to the usual triple jump diving method. This works because the speed increase that you get by diving up a slope (here, the angled cube) also increases the distance covered by your jumps. Be careful here, you need to spin the control stick in a way that you don't lose your speed or else you're done.
Pretty sure you can get a sideflip dive during the cutscene for this method as well, which means you'll be even closer to him and that means more time saves. Yay.
This way of defeating Shadow Mario here is about 2-3 seconds faster than chasing him to the right. Reason for that is the near banana location I guess. It's not too difficult.
Ok, this...is pretty nuts. Your movement has to be very precise and swift all the way through and that's just not going to happen in an RTA run. So honestly, this strat is more for show than anything, but you have to admit it looks insane.
The ending can look a lot better, but I just couldn't do any better than what you see here. I've tried, oh I have. But any more attempts of this are going to make me lose my last bit of sanity, so I'll leave it at that.
This strat can be approximately 2 seconds faster than what Samuraiman and I use in our RTA runs. You're going to have to nail the ending part for that, though.
As always, enjoy!
No personal comments because I want to do that for a run that's kinda hard to improve for me.

I got a 1:36 with that run btw lol -- www.twitch.tv/hiddenpower13/c/2429614&utm_campaign=archive_export&utm_source=hiddenpower13&utm_medium=youtube
Ignore the German text, I buy my Pokémon games in German because I want to ensure compatibility.
Seriously, you could insert that sound I make at the end into a porn movie and it would fit....kinda.
Lol.
This was not an easy run to get, I tell you. I wasted way too many hours on this, but at least the result is satisfying.
I still don't really understand how the rope works...Sometimes, you can jump off right away, sometimes you can't. I think it might have something to do with your position, but I can't be sure.
Played on the Japanese version for no particular reason (I thought Shine GET looked cooler than just Shine)
I would not exactly recommend using this method in a run unless you are insanely practised.
Enjoy.
On a more serious note, this is a softlock. I was wondering what would happen if you got the shine and this is the result. Looks pretty funny.
I made a lot of silly mistakes in this run and died twice, which makes me not completely satisfied. But I think this run is still worth uploading, especially since it's a nice update to my old 1:44.
Personal comments:
Pianta Village 7:07 - 18:00 : Not the best start, but it was alright. Got troll'd by Chain Chomplets like always. Pretty fast Yoshi Skip. Kinda failed at Piantas in Need and Shadow Mario.
Bianco Hills 19:52 - 31:09 : Pretty good actually, until I kinda choked on Dirty Lake Secret. A sloppy entrance and a mess up in the secret that made me die on purpose put a dent into my time, but the rest was good. Got the wallkicks of the windmill blades on episode 1 too.
Gelato Beach 32:26 - 45:18 : Ok, a lot went wrong here and that's super dumb because this stage is supposed to be easy. I couldn't get into the stage for the life of me. I died in the secret and I never had that situation happen. The rest was ok with some sloppy moves here and there and a bad Shadow Mario.
Ricco Harbor 46:33 - 55:58 : No major mistakes, but some minor ones here and there. Pretty good overall I guess.
Pinna Park 57:06 - 1:09:11 : Nice blue coin you got there, bro. Beginning 3 shines were mediocre at best, picked up the pace with a nice Shine 4 and 5, only to get the coconut in episode 6. I tried to throw it to save some time, but that failed. Oh, and I almost died in the secret too, how great.
Sirena Beach 1:09:55 - 1:23:45 : That manta was awesome for my standards.Too bad I threw away the time gained in the episode after that, ugh. I make ugly mistakes all the time here. The fruit clip method in episode 3 is relatively new. One King Boo extra cycle is definitely good luck still.
Noki Bay 1:24:02 - 1:35:21 : Pretty decent overall. I tried to get damaged by the last tooth of the Eel, but messed it up somehow. No super costly mistakes, only optimisation problems.
Corona Mountain 1:36:00 - end : I was too slow to make the earliest cycle on the platforms. Boat was fine I guess. Clouds were good and I got the cloud skip too. Final Bowser fight was sweet until the end where I got combo'd hard. Good thing I didn't die.
Overall, I'm not satisfied with any of the stages, so there's still some good room for improvement. Well I must say, I'm never satisfied with my runs, but that's how all speedrunners are lol.
I sometimes do live runs of this game. So, if you enjoyed this run, it might be worth it to check out my streaming page:

Enjoy.
7:05 - 9:47 : Normal strategy (gold tooth edition)
9:48 - 13:26 : Advanced strategy (only use if practised)
13:27 - 17:28 : Backup strategy (in case of geting eaten or him going down)
Written strategy for normal strategy (white tooth):
Get hit by the bubble shown in the video to get maximum air for the fight. Once your air gets refilled, start hovering and to so until he opes his mouth. Then, switch to first person mode and spray nozzle and spray the teeth as shown. After that, gain height by switching to hover nozzle and look at the left tooth in front of you. In this case, it was white. This is important to know because the location of the gold tooth changes your strategy. In order to get a one cycle, you have to clean the gold tooth as the second to last one because cleaning the gold tooth as late as possible makes him stay up.
Coming back to this example, after you have realised that the tooth in front of you is white, wait for him to start spinning. After he does that, provoke him into trying to eat you by going low. As soon as you hear the sound that indicates that he wants to eat you, hover out and keep hovering until he opens his mouth again. Then, switch into first person mode and spray nozzle to clean one of his teeth. After that, go back into his mouth, but use the first person mode so that you come out at the exact same side again (all while getting him to try to eat you again). Clean the remaining tooth, but keep your height up at a decent level. Then, go to his other side and make him close his moth again. Proceed to clean the gold tooth. In this case, the final tooth is on the same side as you, so hover to the left quite a bit and go for the cutscene skip (or don't if you have very little air left). To get the cutscene skip, you have to clean the last tooth while Mario blinks (he blinks when he loses air). There are 2 methods to go about this: Either wait until you lose air normally or hover into the tooth to get damaged on purpose. Either way, clean his tooth halfway then go for the strat you prefer. When you get the cutscene skip, go down to collect some coins to make sure you don't die. Don't go for the cutscene skip with less than 3 units of air, it's probably going to kill you (and dying on the Eel is a harsh time loss).
Written strategy for normal strategy (gold tooth edition):
Do the same like the previous clip up to the point where you determine the colour of the tooth in front of you. For this example, it is gold. Get him to try to eat you, then hover out. Spray the white tooth, then hover to the other side. Clean the lower white tooth. Hover back to the other side to clean the gold tooth. Note: Keep up a decent height at all times so that you can make it to the other side. This time, the final tooth is on the other side. Hover to the right, but just a bit. Then, go for the cutscene skip like normal or don't, depending on your air.
Written strategy for advanced strategy:
Do everything like in the previous clips and clean the 4 middle teeth. Gain some height with your hover nozzle after that. Then, spray the white tooth to the left of you for a total of 5 teeth cleaned before he starts spinning. NOTE: If the tooth in front of you is gold, you can't go for the optimal strategy anymore. You will have to use the strategy shown in the previous clip.
Hover out of his mouth and turn around to clean the white upper tooth. Hover to the other side and clean the gold tooth. Almost done, now hover the way I showed in the first strategy clip and go for the cutscene skip or don't, depending on your air.
Written strategy for backup strategy:
Here I show how you can minimise your time loss after a big mistake happens (him going down early or you getting eaten). When he goes down, restore your air with some coins. Wait until he goes up again and spray every remaining teeth in the middle if there this are any. If that is done, you must note that the Eel goes down instantly after cleaning any of his 3 teeth that he loses (the white ones to the utter left and utter right) EXCEPT if he starts spinning, in which case you can clean those teeth without him going down. So as a result, spend your time pre-cleaning a few teeth halfway, but don't clean any of them completely. Once he starts spinning, get to the side that has the gold tooth and provoke him into trying to eat you. After that, follow the strategy shown in the second strategy clip.
NOTE: If for some reason any of his utter left or utter right white teeth are already cleaned, just adjust your strategy accordingly so that you clean his gold tooth as the second to last tooth.
To wrap this up, some general advice:
- Pay attention to the bubble at the beginning, you don't want to miss that air refill.
- Don't get too low while cleaning his middle 4 teeth, it will make him try to eat you, which instantly makes him go down
- Always keep a decent height while trying to clean his outer teeth
The reason why this saves time is because you don't have to watch 4 Delfino Plaza cutscenes that take 2,5 seconds each, saving 10 seconds. The little detour to Ricco only takes like 4 seconds, so you'll end up saving about 6 by using this simple method.
This is not useful for runs that go for Pianta Village first because you will have too many shines at that point and the game will show you the Noki Bay entrance cutscene like normal.
Enjoy.
Here's what you have to watch out for in written form:
Step 1: Find a camera angle and a position for Mario that makes you clip into the tree reliably. What I like doing is to first position my camera straight, then give it a bit of an angle. After that, I go to the middle of the circle on the ground and a tad to the right of it to clip. It works pretty well, though it's also somewhat precise.
I encourage everybody who wants to try this trick himself/herself to experiment with camera angles and positions. Different setups work for different people. I just wanted to give you guys a general idea with my setup.
Step 2: Once you think your position is good, press L to to be able to sidestep (must be done when equipped with spray nozzle) and then get ready to fall (switch to Hover Nozzle after going into sidestepping mode !)
Now watch out for this essential thing: Even when you fall, keep holding left on your control stick. That way, you'll avoid grabbing the ledge for sure and secondly, you'll be able to barely hover into the loading zone if you start hovering slightly too late.
Step 3: As for the moment when you have to start hovering, there is sadly no visual cue (or at least I see nothing you could watch out for). I just kinda start hovering once I am below the ledge. Mostly, I just trust my gut feeling really. That sounds very unreliable, but it actually kinda works. I would recommend practising the hover a couple of times to get a feelig for it too. Also, you can watch this video to get an idea of the timing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hjI1T3C5S0
That is pretty much everything I know. I hope I could give you guys some good advice on this. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to tell me in the comments.
Enjoy.
This could potentially be faster than the triple jump method, but it's too hard to get quick, in my opinion.
