3 Ideas for Making Seasonal Cinnamon Stick Art Brushes Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-11-11 | I knew when I picked up the artificial pine needle branch in the holiday aisle at Hobby Lobby that it would make a pretty handmade art brush. My initial thought was to make a handle with air dry clay just like my friend Kristin Peterson made in The Art Brush Maker Project. But once I scanned my art table and all the seasonal goodies spread across it, an idea formed and voilà the cinnamon stick art brush was born. What a fun handle for a brush…it smells nice and is so unconventional.I incorporated anise star, dried oranges, moss and even bells to round out a trio of art brushes. Mixed Media Collage Process in Mini Journal Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-06-28 | While I enjoy creating in my larger art journals, especially my Salvaged Journal, my minis are great for when I don’t have a lot of time.I have several of these small journals that I made by removing the pages from old books and then cutting the covers in half. This way I get two little minis out of one book. Most of the time I paint the covers either white or black with acrylic paint and then adhere a mini collage to the front. Easy Instagram Reels for Artists Using Canva Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-06-24 | Instagram Reels Don’t Have to be Hard!I’ve been experimenting with ways to do Instagram Reels in a way that works for me. I don't want to spend a lot of time on them but want them to be of value. I also consider what I like in a Reel and strive to emulate that.I have found the easiest to create is one that has a few images with a transition in between. It emulates a carousel, only the viewer doesn’t have to swipe. The idea is to set the images to play for around 4-5 seconds with a transition in between the images. This is an easy Reel to make and only requires a few beautiful photos. If you want to learn exactly how I make them using a free tool called Canva, then I am happy to share it with you. This is the exact training video that is inside my Maker's Tech U membership. This can feel particularly challenging when your business relies on your creativity. As hobbyists we are used to waiting for inspiration. As business owners, we do not have that luxury. Here are 5 simple strategies I use to make sure I stay as efficient and productive as possible.1. Declutter your space - clear out and reorganize your studio or other workspace. This can help you get into the right mindset for your work. 2. See your inspiration - surround yourself with things that inspire you. This might be a family photo, fresh flowers, or an inspiration board. The idea here is to always have something that motivates you in your line of sight.3. Focus on what matters - prioritize your tasks. When looking at a never ending to do list, ask yourself: Will this task help me move closer towards my goals and does it have to be me that does this? If that answer is no, cross it off or delegate the task. Whatever is left on the list needs to go on to your calendar.4. Put parameters on your time - Don't slip into bad habits. It doesn't take much for work tasks to creep into your down time. Set work hours for yourself. Have specific start and finish times. This will help you stay healthy for your mind, relationships, and productivity. 5. Challenge yourself - It can be easy to let a lot of actual creative slide when you are in charge of all aspects of your business. If you notice this happening, sign up for a creative challenge. How to Stay Focused When You Have too Many Creative Ideas Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-05-12 | Have you ever had so many ideas filling your head that you don't know where to begin? It's like the old saying about buses- you'll be waiting forever for one to come, and then they'll arrive all at once. The same is true of ideas.Here are a few of my favorite ways to help you stay focused when you have too many creative ideas.1. Start by getting all your ideas out of your head and onto paper (or screen). Bullet journals is a lovely way to do this. Another way is through the app called Trello. Pick what works best for you.2. Make note how you feel about all your ideas. If something really excites you, run with it. The best ideas are the ones you keep thinking about.3. At the start of each month, pick a focus or a theme. Use that focus to select the ideas you're going to try first.4. 5 Ways to Overcome Perfectionism in Your Creative Life Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-05-04 | Do you struggle with perfectionism in your creative life? Here are 5 strategies to help you let go:Strategy 1: Start by reminding yourself that art is subjective. With subjectivity there really is no perfect, right? To one, perfection might be a traditional oil portrait to another it's an abstract screen print. Know that there is no all-encompassing state of perfection and it only sets you up for unfulfillment and frustration.Strategy 2: Abandon the "all or nothing" mindset. I have fallen in the trap of doing one lesson and packed it up when it wasn't perfect. There will always be things you want to do, but aren't your forte... yet. It's all about progress, so stop focusing on reaching perfect. You are a work in progress and so is your art.Strategy 3: Rely on tools that take away your control. Perfectionism is the control freak's disease, so why not try using tools and techniques that take away a bit of that control?Here are a few ideas to get you going:-use torn scraps of paper -scrape paint with a key card-drip and splatter paint-add doodles with your non-dominant hand-scribble-use your underpaper as a college elementStrategy Four: Get your journal out. 5 Steps to Film Art Videos With Ease Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-04-25 | Are you an artist needing some tips on filming art videos? Here are five tips to get you started:1. Outline your talking points. Switching on that camera for the first time can feel like walking out onto a stage and forgetting your lines. Write down a few bullet points that you want to be sure to mention during your video. I also find it helpful to speak slowly. One of my best tips for filming art videos is to film with editing in mind. This will make more sense as you continue to make and edit videos. As you’re filming, pause between transitions.2. Take care of your voice. Narrating your videos can take its toll on your voice, particularly if you film for long stretches at a time, so make sure you keep some water or tea close by - lemon and ginger tea is a great choice if you’re looking for something to soothe your throat.3. Create your own pre-filming ritual. My advice is to create a calming ritual that you can carry out before each filming session. It could be as simple as listening to your favorite song, meditating for 5 minutes or taking a few deep breaths… just something to help you chill out a little.4. Take the pressure off yourself. Remember what I said at the start? You don’t have to go from zero to video wizard overnight. Take small steps. You could start out my filming your hands as you work, with music on in the background. When you’re comfortable with that, add in a voiceover. When that feels easy, try narrating as you film.5. Practice! As with art, practicing is the only way to get better at making videos. You don’t have to publish everything you film, just keep practicing behind the scenes. Challenge yourself to film your art as you create it. Five Tips to Creating Art Consistently Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-04-17 | How do you develop a recognizable style? While there is no "short cut system" there is one concept that has helped me grow as an artist... consistency. Here are five ways to became more consistent in your creative process.1. Declare creativity a priority. Decide that you want to train your creative brain to be present and practice the skills you want to develop. This sounds silly, but try saying it out loud. 2. Make Space. I mean this both literally and metaphorically. Start by making sure you have an easily accessible space for creative play. If you don't have an art studio, try taking over the kitchen table or a corner in the den. 3. Pick your project. Choose one area of focus. This could be anything from art journaling to embroidery to watercolor abstracts. If you get distracted by a new technique, follow that muse. Just go with it and see what happens.4. Stay inspired. Think of your art as something that uses up inspiration. In order to keep creating, you need to keep refueling that source. Instagram and Pinterest are both gold mines of ideas. Want a different source of inspiration? Go to a flower show, a museum, or try new foods.5. Surround yourself with the right people. As creatives, most of us tend to be quite sensitive, which means we need to spend time with those who support and encourage us. 5 Things Every Artist Needs on Their Website Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-04-10 | It’s no secret that building an online presence is an excellent way to launch or grow your career as an artist, maker or designer. Considering creating a website for your creative business? Here are 5 things every art website needs.1. Examples of your beautiful work: You have beautiful work to share with the world and your website is your time to shine. Show samples of your art on your home page for sure, but set up a gallery page to showcase your different art mediums, projects, commissions, etc.2. A clear way to buy from you: Add a link to your shop in your main navigation, right at the top of your website. Even if this is just a link to your Etsy shop, include it. You don’t want to make people work to buy a piece of art or sign up for one of your classes.3. An opportunity to join your mailing list: Setting up a mailing list is one of the most impactful things you can do for your creative business. Having a mailing list is your opportunity to reach out to people who have already said they “want” to hear from you. Take the time to send them information about you, your story, your art and any other topics that you want to share with them. Build a relationship with your list and treat them extra special.4. A clear way to contact you: Make sure you have a clear way for website visitors to contact you. Don't make them hunt for it because they will likely just get frustrated.5. 5 Easy Ways to Repurpose Your Instagram Art Posts Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2022-04-04 | You work hard to create Instagram art posts to inspire and serve your followers. How about share that knowledge in different ways by repurposing. Here are five easy ways to do that today:1. Share your posts across your other social media platforms. Setup your posts to instantly share to your Facebook business page. Don't forget to mix up the times you are reposting so people who are online at different times of the day see your posts.2. Pin your Instagram posts to Pinterest. Tall graphics with numerous photos and text overlay is considered a "Pinterest optimized" image so try experimenting a little with your images so they can be used on both platforms easily.3. Embed Instagram Images in emails or blog posts. It is super easy to do this and it ensures you have a consistent brand "look and feel."4. Embed your Instagram feed on your website. This will also keep your website looking fresh every day. If you use Squarespace, you can display it using the Instagram Block feature. How to Make a Paper Gift Card Holder and Mini Journal Roben-Marie Smith - Art 2021-12-11 | Generic gift card holders are boring! Why not DIY your own? How about turn the “holder” into a gift in itself? Your friends will fall in love with the holder for sure when you gift them one of these mini journals.In this video tutorial I show you how to take a large piece of painted sketchbook paper and fold it into a mini journal. There’s a pocket for the gift card and another one for other goodies. These mini journals boast two signatures of colorful and random papers. They are the perfect backdrop to the black and white pattern of the journal.The structure of the mini journal is made from a large piece of 18’ x 24” Canson sketchbook paper. Using handmade brushes, scrapers, watercolor, pencils, pens, ink and more I add black marks to these papers. The papers are easy and fun to create.
