I held my horn down to get the driver’s attention, but the driver continued the maneuver as if cutting off traffic was no big deal. This was reckless, careless driving. A vehicle doesn’t just pull out from a parked position and swing across the road without properly checking for approaching traffic.Thankfully, I was able to avoid hitting the Subaru. The cyclists then proceeded through the crosswalk.The crossing guard initially appeared unaware that they were entering the roadway. Once he noticed them, he took several steps off the curb while holding up his stop sign.At the same time, a small red hatchback that had stopped at the stop sign to my left began entering the intersection.It’s unclear whether the driver didn’t initially see the crossing guard, the cyclists, or both. The red vehicle eventually stopped after appearing to notice the first cyclist.Then things got even more concerning. The vehicle appeared to momentarily accelerate before braking again, which I suspect may have been when the driver noticed the smaller cyclist.In my opinion, the crossing guard should have been positioned more centrally and paying closer attention to the intersection before the cyclists entered the crosswalk and traffic began moving.But I’m not placing all the blame on the crossing guard.I also believe the older cyclist should have taken greater responsibility for helping the smaller cyclist cross safely. When you’re traveling with a smaller or more vulnerable cyclist, there should be an effort to make sure they can safely navigate the crossing.The issue here wasn’t necessarily one person alone — it was the reaction and timing of everyone involved.⚠️ A crossing guard has to see the cyclists. A driver has to see the crossing guard and people in the crosswalk. Since I enjoy documenting emergency responses, I safely followed from a distance.After passing the intersection, I noticed the patrol vehicle had blocked off Leavitte Street. As I drove past, I could see fire trucks and firefighters setting up hose lines, with smoke coming from what appeared to be 11 Leavitte Street.I safely pulled over and parked along Lafayette Street, where there is on-street parking. I then got out and crossed the street while police temporarily stopped traffic to allow another fire truck to access Leavitte Street.When I approached the scene, I confirmed that smoke was coming from 11 Leavitte Street, appearing to come from the ceiling area of a second-floor porch.I have no information regarding whether anyone was injured or the extent of the damage. This was reported as a three-alarm fire.According to one witness, Beverly and Lynn sent pump trucks to assist. I personally didn’t see any other fire departments, but they may have arrived after I left. When Your Convenience Becomes My Risk Massachusetts Traffic & Public Interest Watch. 2026-08-18 | Today at around 4:50 PM, I was sitting in my car parked near a park in Salem while my daughter played. A woman pulled up beside me, then backed up and parked behind my car. She got out, came to my driver’s side window, and asked me to move my car forward so she could park behind me.She pointed out a sign attached to an orange-and-white traffic barrel about 15 feet in front of my car. The sign indicated that parking was prohibited Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 4 PM. She explained that it was already past 4 PM, so I should move forward.What she didn’t know was that earlier in the day, an enforcement officer had driven by and specifically told me that I could remain where I was, but not move any farther forward because doing so would put me into the restricted area and could result in a ticket or tow. I was also told that the cones would remain there after 4 PM.I explained this to her, but she continued insisting that I move my car forward so she could park behind me. I politely declined. I wasn’t about to put myself into a potentially restricted area—or risk a ticket or tow—just because someone else wanted the spot behind me.Eventually, she became annoyed, walked away, and simply parked in front of the traffic barrel herself.Honestly, what surprised me most wasn’t that she asked. It was the expectation that I should assume the risk after explaining exactly why I wasn’t willing to do it.Sometimes it seems like people forget that their convenience isn’t automatically someone else’s responsibility. Parking Rage Massachusetts Traffic & Public Interest Watch. 2026-08-16 | Parking Rage at Salem WillowsI was driving down Restaurant Row at Salem Willows looking for a place to park. I noticed a red van parked almost at the corner of Memorial Drive with enough space in front of it to park my car. However, my intuition told me otherwise. I felt the front end of my car might have slightly extended past the corner, potentially making the parking illegal.I decided not to take the chance. I turned left onto Memorial Drive and found another parking space.As I walked from my car, I could see an older man yelling at another man about parking too close to his van. I immediately thought, “That’s where I was going to park. I’m glad I didn’t.”The other driver apparently didn’t hear the man yelling at him. The situation escalated, and the older man became so angry that he spit on the other man’s car.All of this over a parking dispute.Depending on the circumstances and whether the vehicle was damaged or injured by the act, intentionally spitting on someone’s vehicle could potentially be investigated as property damage or injury under Massachusetts law. The yelling and confrontation could also raise other issues depending on exactly what was said or done. Ultimately, law enforcement would have to determine whether a criminal offense occurred.I ended up approaching the victim and told him what I had witnessed. I also gave him the video I recorded. Before he left, I asked whether he had a rear-facing dashcam. If he did, there is a possibility that his camera captured the man’s license plate.I’m not sure what happened after he left to confront the man, but I hope the situation didn’t escalate further.Let this be another reminder of why having a dashcam can be so important. You never know when you may witness something—or become involved in something—that needs to be documented.I’m glad I had my camera running and was able to capture what happened.If anyone recognizes the man involved and has legitimate information that could help identify him, please don’t post his personal information publicly. I provided her with balloons that she was using as a toy while playing at the park. My daughter began making a squeaking sound with the balloon by pinching the mouthpiece and stretching it, which is a common way children make noises with balloons.A young child at the park approached his mother and complained that he did not like the sound. The child’s mother then approached me and alleged that my daughter was “attacking” her son. I explained to her that my daughter was simply playing with a balloon in a public park and was not directing the balloon or the sound toward her child. I also instructed my daughter to remain away from the child and to respect his personal space.The mother continued to insist that I tell my daughter not to use the balloon in that manner. I explained that the park is a public space and that my daughter was engaging in normal play with her own toy. I told the mother that if she believed there was an actual issue, she was free to contact park officials or law enforcement. She stated that she would do so, but no such contact was made.During the interaction, my daughter was standing on the ground using the balloon, while the other child was positioned on the playground structure. The video I posted shows other parents and children moving through the area. At no point was my daughter physically approaching, threatening, or interfering with the other child.The situation appeared to stem from a disagreement over a child’s reaction to another child’s normal play activity. I believe I handled the situation appropriately by addressing the concern, instructing my daughter to maintain distance from the other child, and allowing both children to continue using the public park respectfully. Today the WITCH CITY MALL, aka the East India Square Mall is a mixed-use retail complex located in downtown Salem at 158 Essex St. Often referenced locally as the Witch City Mall and also Museum Place Mall, it features a diverse mix of shops, a pizza parlor. a charter school, business offices, and a movie theater. It’s a struggling mall with endless code violations. It’s been like this for a while. Over a decade. Defensive Driving Massachusetts Traffic & Public Interest Watch. 2026-06-16 | Earlier today at approximately 10:06 AM, while traveling northbound on Route 1 in Topsfield, I observed a box truck roughly 200 feet ahead of me repeatedly drifting into the breakdown lane. Recognizing that the driver’s behavior was unusual, I immediately switched into a defensive driving mindset and increased my awareness of the situation.Moments later, the truck swerved onto the shoulder and struck a 2×4 that was lying in the breakdown lane. The impact launched the board into the air, causing it to break apart and scatter splintered debris in the air and across the roadway, creating an immediate hazard for surrounding traffic.As the debris traveled toward my vehicle, I had to quickly react by maneuvering to avoid the larger pieces while simultaneously tracking the movement of the airborne 2×4, anticipating where it might land, and watching for smaller fragments that could strike my vehicle or create additional hazards. Throughout the incident, I remained focused on maintaining control of my vehicle and monitoring the traffic around me to avoid a secondary collision.Thanks to remaining alert and practicing defensive driving, I was able to safely avoid the debris and continue without incident.This incident had the potential to end much differently. A large piece of lumber being struck at highway speed can become an unpredictable airborne projectile capable of causing serious vehicle damage, loss of control, or a multi-vehicle accident. Had I not recognized the danger early and reacted defensively, the outcome could have been very bad, resulting in injuries to myself, my passengers, or other motorists sharing the roadway. Salem Residentially Challenged Addicts of Lafayette Street Massachusetts Traffic & Public Interest Watch. 2026-05-29 | On May 28, 2026, at approximately 5:40 PM, two homeless individual known to frequent the area and believed to be under the influence of drugs attempted to gain access to a building on Lafayette Street in Salem Massachusetts by following a tenant inside. Due to ongoing safety concerns involving nonresidents entering the property, I instructed the individuals that they were not permitted to enter the building. One individual then became confrontational and made threatening statements toward tenants in the building, causing concern for the safety and well-being of residents and their guests.This incident follows prior issues involving homeless drug users gaining unauthorized access to the property. On May 7, 2026, two nonresident females were blocking the front entrance of the building and only moved after being sternly instructed to do so. As I entered the building with my eight-year-old daughter and fiancee, one of the females asked where she could purchase drugs inside the building. The incident was immediately reported to property management, and property management staff located the individual and addressed the situation.
