C64 Music House Music - using Quantum Soundtracker and KORG NTS-3 on Classic Computing 2024 helixrider 2024-09-29 | A few weeks back, I learnt about a new C64 software release: Quantum Soundtracker by Aleksi Eeben. As I love tracker UIs and was very impressed by the QS new features (three tracks of sequenced samples music from a stock C64 machine!), I decided that this would be an awesome project for me during exhibiting old computers and consoles at Classic Computing 2024 congress. So I sat there with my headphones on and learnt the features of Quantum Soundtracker, at first by using the default samples, then by bringing own samples over to C64. The most tricky part was to convert the "House Music" sample down as far as possible, so that I could load it up together with the other samples into the approx. 40 kb free RAM of the Commdore computer. Arranging the song in the tracker was straight forward, three tracks, sample usable per step, two tracks feature sample tuning, one track oneshots. The later I used for the beat, the other two for the bass and the chords plus the vocal sample.As C64 creates the sound with the SID chip in mono, only, I decided to add the @KorgOfficial kaoss pad NTS-3 to add width and some performance effects to the sound. HWJ Fest 2024 The Fever Dream - helixrider / 20 minutes live-performance w. Syntakt and Digitakt helixrider 2024-08-12 | "The Fever Dream" Have you ever experienced a fever dream-ish state? Had that lately, unfortunately, due to a Covid infection. It all starts with some shallow dreamy sequence. All good and quite lush, but even when asleep, you realize, that it is different - never ending, goal-less, repeating itself. And some small tiny elements make you feel uncomfortable. Then when you try harder and harder to break out of that loop, reality starts to distort. And the loop remains. Meandering around small, disturbing fragments, ever-repeating pictures, sequences and emotions, it is driving you into a claustrophobic state where paranoia is kicking in. Later, with the fever lowering and with great relief, you are able to reach the initial lush state, again. And get awake with a sweat covered shirt. I took my mobile rig with Elektron Syntakt and Digitakt out, climbed some fences and installed myself on a construction site. 😊WEC wants us to create a "Techno" track, so I went with a multi-layered minimal bassline and added some granular speech samples. Run, Dave, Run! - Sonicware Liven MEGA SYNTHESIS helixrider 2024-02-03 | "Puh!", Dave is sighing and turns around anxiously. Hot fat sauce is dripping down from his shirt onto his trousers, as he is holding that huge Kebap skewer tight. "How could I only?! What made me sneak this thing from the grill and run out of the shop, while the owner was away, fetching something from the backroom?" Dave has no time to think further, the angry voices are coming closer. He turns around again, grabs his load even tighter and starts to run again.Run, Dave, Run! This is my first jam with the @SONICWARE Liven MEGA SYNTHESIS, a tiny groovebox providing multiple Synth- and sound-engines and the great Liven sequencer. I already like it ;-). (Syntakt, Minifreak, Digitakt) helixrider 2024-01-14 | "All hands on deck 5 - intruders detected in air lock 12!"Fred and Linda grab Caroline's hands and start running towards the next stairs. "Oh no, they finally found us and gained access to the underwater station Deep Sea 5", Fred shouts and both adults exchange a quick glance. "What will happen? Will the intruders be caught? Will they damage the station?"Other inhabitants join the family, as they start descending to the lowest deck with the airlocks. On level 1, Fred is getting handed over a shotgun. He checks the load and arms it. Then the walls start shaking and a deep growling sound can be heard... Today, I chose to do a new take on one of my older tracks "You Got To Give" and bring it to a very danceable and hypnotic level. Minifreak and Syntakt get joined by Digitakt. Louder. He opens his eyes. Tears mingle with the water dripping from his lashes, while he is trying to focus on the people around him. Is it really Caroline, who is pushing his chest and reanimating him? Oh wow. He has made it. "Fred? Fred, can you hear me?", a dark voice is asking. He knows this guy, it's Mani, the captain of the underwater station. "Have you been successful?". Fred's mind starts digging deeper - what was his task? Why did he leave the station? During the enemies' attack; exposing himself to the poisoned environment? Meandering. helixrider 2024-01-05 | Fred's mind tried to hold on to the most precious thing he had, the faces of his beloved wife Linda and their daughter Caroline, while he pushes and pulls with all his left energy to pry open the handle of the airlock of Deep Sea 5. There is no way back to the surface, as neither the air in his lungs will be sufficient to make it upwards nor will the enemies which are invading the area in search of the mankind's underwater retreat not take notice of him reaching the surface. With a loud crack, the lever moves and the gate slowly opens. Fred manages to push himself inside the chamber and with his last energy pushes the the emergency button. Today, I combined it with my @WeAreElektron Syntakt and let the jam flow ;-). You may expect some acidy, a bit noisy techno. As this week's motto of the @HardwareJams Weekend Challenge is to create a two box jam, I did not use the Digitakt tonally, it's just providing compression to the other two instruments. Here's the prompt for the challenge: "Hello and Happy Friday folks! We’ve been very busy jammers over the past few weeks, what with the birthday festival, and favourite streams last week. We’ve also had a load of new members join in the past few days. So let’s get back to basics, and I’ve chosen to set a challenge with minimal barriers to entry.As a result, it’s TWO BOX week! You have from now until Monday lunchtime to create a jam of no more than 5 minutes in length, using 2 synths, or a drum machine and a synth, or 2 ‘boxes’ that make sounds. You can use external FX on your boxes, but try to limit yourselves to 2 types of sound making devices, e.g. drums and bass, drums and pads. 45+ min live techno / Roland T-8 / acid & noise helixrider 2023-04-22 | The @rolandglobal T-8 is dragging me into a wild spiral ride - the more I am using it, the more I fall in love with it... Yes, it is limited. Yes, it requires deep menu diving for sound editing. BUT: If you just play it, play it like an instrument, it is an awesome and very rewarding piece of kit. Having had much fun last weekend with my 15 minutes jam, I decided to give it another go on this week's HWJ Jams challenge for the prompt "The Microscope": (a) because I sometimes think I need a microscope to get along with the fiddly UI of the T-8 and (b) because I am feeling the musical ride along the T-8 spiral to be like diving deeper and deeper into the melodic elements with a microscope. The leaf is torn off by the wind, blown away from a huge, old oak. It used to be part of it the whole spring and summer, in the sun, the rain and the storm. Now, with winter approaching and the first patches of snow on the ground, the old tree let's it go. From the top of the solitary tree, the leaf is blown far enough away to see it's origin, the tree, in full size and complexity. It makes it proud to have been part of this huge organism. I've found a great description of her in one of the livestreams, she is hosting: "'Inky Da Cat' - Queen of the live jam, Empress of the live stream and a genuine Welsh Princess. [She] is a top friend and true legend of the scene. As a big part of the 'Hardware jams' Facebook group, she eschews all things computer for making music in favour of creating tracks live and on the fly with a great selection of kit and cleverness."These words seem so fitting, that I chose them as central phrases for the jam. Music has been created on an Elektron #syntakt and a #volcasample and recorded in one take played live. I am using song mode on the Syntakt here. Some parts of the Volca Sample are running on it's own sequencer, the first part is triggered by ST's part three. It is a bit special: Holds the same sample you are hearing in the beginning, but reversed and the ST is triggering sample start position CC via a randomized LFO. These short grains create a great vocal melody line (... I think so, at least... 😊). This is my second attempt - I felt a bit uncomfortable with the first version, found that not fitting the occasion. These drones are intended to spy in suspicious areas. And, if necessary, take military action... Why only did he fire that developer guy in a rage and not take care to have him immediately escorted out of the building? Another little step, he slowly approaches the entrance of the developer's lab. He will have made it, when he passes the gate - the drones trying to pass will be immediately deactivated, one of the security features of the lab. His body is floating slowly away from the spacecraft, the handle he missed while repairing the solar panel just going out of reach. Nobody is hearing his cries, seeing his unsuccessful tries to escape the inevitable. He is alone. Has been for more than 10 years after his escape from the Grymnian riots. Breathing slow, he is calming down, to save oxygen and to open his mind to search for ways out of this situation. He focuses on the distant stars, feels his weightless body in the stiff spacesuit. Brilliant idea, he thought, and turned his body with small swim-like movements to have the ship in front of him. Then he slowly takes out the knife, taking care to not start rotating again. A small cut in the right place of his suit should have the air stream out and push him towards his ship. 30 seconds. Then the air will be gone and the suit will start to decompress. This weekend, the @HardwareJams challenge was to create a jam inspired by the sounds of the Beads module. Either by using a (brilliant) sample pack provided by @ujtb or by using similar synth synthesis on other machines. I chose the first way and created a sample pack for my vSample from some of the samples. My idea was to create some 178 BPM beats and melodies on the Syntakt to be accompanied by glitchy goodness. Well, at least the idea was good. The jam came out "okayish", as time's very limited this weekend, so I decided to release it. Would have to check it with a hardcore techno approach - that might have suited it better. Oh well... as I am deeply into Syntakt at the moment, I tweaked some percussion to be 909-ish; at least the kick should do. Did it? Or did I miss it? 😊I quite like this little melodic jam. „Houston, We Drank Too Much“ - Hardware Jams Fest ‘22 Liveset helixrider 2022-07-24 | What an honor for me to be part of HWJ‘s Fest‘22 lineup! Thanks, dear #jamfam for having me and also for everything else! 😊I hope you enjoy my 15 minutes liveset with Sonicware Liven Bass & Beats, Roland T-8 and Koala Sampler. I am digging this tiny setup, lately. Though it has it's limitations, playing it feels very intuitive and "natural" to me. As you can see, I am using it literally everywhere atm. My current approach with this setup is going more and more to creating and playing as much as possible live and have my vibe decide on the fly, how to evolve the track. In advance, I am preparing the sound design and doing the pre-arrangements in some tracks, then I use them to intuitively build up the final audio experience. By this, every single take is special and unique. The (current) goal is, to get additionally more into live-sequencing and to practice more on integrating different fills and transitions. I refrained from video editing and effects this time. And I am sorry for the „70% of the time the arm is in the way“-visuals… 🤪Audio and synch-routing:Liven B&B is daisy-chained via T-8 audio in. The audio-out of T-8 goes via a small USB audio-interface into the iPad. There, I am using AUM to add another channel for Koala Sampler.
