Honestly, it didn't go as smoothly as planned. We had issues with the circuit not working at all at first and part values not being quite right which made it sound pretty bad. With these issues in mind, I asked ChatGPT for more advice and made some changes to the circuit.
After adjusting the circuit based on Chat GPT’s recommendations, it was time to test our new and improved circuit. Still, it was way off from being a great sounding overdrive circuit. A few more adjustments recommended by ChatGPT led us to a fuzzy sound, which again, not what we were looking for in a guitar pedal overdrive.
At this point, I decided to trust my own instincts and knowledge of guitar pedals. We adjusted some things, tried some new ideas, and ended up with a sound that while not perfect, was definitely better.
So what's the takeaway from all this? ChatGPT is a cool tool for bouncing around ideas and learning new things. But when it comes to making guitar pedals that really work, we're not quite there yet. As AI continues to evolve, we might see more practical applications in electronic design tools like SPICE.
To all the beginner and intermediate guitar pedal builders and engineers out there: stay curious, stay creative. AI is a fun tool, but your original ideas and knowledge make your projects unique.

When I was a kid, I wanted a cranked Marshall amp like my guitar heroes had, but tube amps weren't as common or affordable as they are now. My first amp was a Kingston solid-state, which was sort of the normal type of amp for a kid starting out then.. Later, in my early teens, I upgraded to a Crate G40 and swapped my Ibanez chorus pedal for this exact Boss OD-1 with a friend of mine, Joe Sherfick.
The OD-1 was a game-changer in the world of overdrive pedals though.. There was nothing quite like it around, and most “dirt” pedals were fuzzier rather than having that tight overdrive sound. It did have a major flaw though many thought -It didn't have a tone control. So Ibanez added a tone control, but had to use symmetrical clipping because Boss had a patent on their asymmetrical clipping style and came out with the tubescreamer.
Boss came back with the SD-1 in 1981 though, which was very similar to the Tube Screamer, which…. was quite similar to the OD-1.
Fast-forward to '85, Boss released the OD-2 to replace the OD-1. Oddly, they changed the circuitry completely, making it sound entirely different. They did add a high-gain turbo mode, though. But in 1997 Boss introduced the OD-3 with different circuits yet again, and a great overdriven sound.
Sure, the OD-1 has some limitations, such as a bit of a mid-rangey tone, no tone control, lack of bass, and a slightly funky power supply requirement that doesn't always work with standard 9V DC power supplies. It's also been referred to as a "one-trick pony," but I like it!
Despite these limitations, the OD-1 was revolutionary for its time. It introduced asymmetrical clipping and it’s a platform for those into modding and building pedals.. You can modify it easily to add more or a different style of gain, more or less bass and treble, or even add an entirely different EQ section.
Without the OD-1, we wouldn't have had the Tube Screamer or the many versions of that circuit. More importantly, we wouldn’t have the great tones captured on numerous recordings by some of our favorite guitarists.

Step by step how to use NAM "Easy Mode"
1- Download the "V1_1_1.wav" here: drive.google.com/file/d/1v2xFXeQ9W2Ks05XrqsMCs2viQcKPAwBk/view
2- Play that audio file through your amp rig and record the output. Amp only! No Cabinet, unless you are wanting to use the entire signal chain including mics, which eliminates using IR’s for the most part for cab modeling)
3- Export your recorded wav file as 24bit 48khz, IN MONO, and name it "output.wav"
4- Make sure your output.wav is EXACTLY the same size as V1.wav (this has to be sample-perfect or it wont work)
5- Go to the Google Colab website colab.research.google.com/github/sdatkinson/neural-amp-modeler/blob/main/bin/train/easy_colab.ipynb
6- Click on the folder icon (left side of screen under the spyglass and the "{x}" icons)
7- Drag and drop your audio files (V1.wav and output.wav) into the blank area at that opens up when you click on the folder icon
8- Scroll down to "Step 2: Installation" and click on the "[ ]" inside the darker box inside of the Step 2 area. Should see a bunch of script stuff fill the page. Scroll down.
9- Underneath "Step 3: Train!" find the 2nd darker box. If you want to increase the epochs, find where it says "run(epochs=100)" and type in whatever you want. "run(epochs=1000)" is great but remember that it takes about 8 seconds per-epoch so plan accordingly.
10- Click on the "[ ]" inside of Step 3 to begin running the training. If you see a red "play" button, find the error message below and report it on the user group. If its running correctly, you will see a loading bar filling up over and over with an Epoch number in front of it.
11- When its done, you will see a new folder in the folder section called "exported_models". Open up the sub-folder that has 6 different files in it. Right-click and download "config.json" and "weights.npy". Its a good idea to put them both inside a folder on your computer and name that folder after the hardware you modeled and the date you made the model or other details (easier reference if you make multiple versions).
12- Download the NeuralAmpModeler.vst3/AU using the installer and put it in your VST3 folder or if on a mac the AU will install where it needs to: github.com/sdatkinson/NeuralAmpModelerPlugin/releases
13- Start up your DAW and load up NAM Snapshot (folder is called "Steve Atkinson" in your VST3/AU finder).
14- Click the "Choose Model" button on the GUI and find the folder with your config.json and weights.npy files (the newest version of NAM just saves as “model.nam” which is the file you load into your plugin)
15- Add an IR after the NAM Snapshot plugin
16- Enjoy If you want to adjust the epochs or the number of channels run(epochs=X, stage_1_channels=Y) Where: X = 100 for quick and decently accurate X = 1000 for slow and very accurate Y = 12 for lightweight VST3 CPU cost but less articulate Y = 16 for typical kinda heavy CPU cost (this is the default) Y = 20 for very heavy CPU cost but more articulate

In this video, we'll be closely examining two various Klon-based circuits operating at 9V and the original Klon circuit voltage utilizing the Wampler Tumnus, a clone of the Gold Klon circuitry.
We'll talk briefly about the voltage level that guitar pedals typically operate at (9V) as well as the voltage that the stock Klon circuit operates at. Then we'll talk about how I believe these type of pedals sound best when used in a specific way, which is not the way that guitar players typically use distortion pedals.
Both the Distortion Plus and the OD250 circuits use a 741 op-amp chip, which is known for taking off some high-end and giving a vintage-sounding tone. Many people like to use these pedals through clean amps, but I personally prefer to use them with a dirty amp as it gives a more unique and interesting sound.
Overall, the video is a detailed comparison of two classic distortion pedals, the MXR Distortion Plus and the DOD OD250, and a modern overdrive preamp pedal, the JHS Overdrive Preamp. I'll also dive into the schematics, comparing the frequency analysis of each and comparing the two schematics to each other.

It’s easy to become frustrated with trying to find the perfect sound, and never quite getting there. And obviously buying new gear can be expensive, especially when you're not sure if it will make a difference.
In this video I’m detailing 11 ways to improve your guitar tone without spending any money. I'll be sharing 11 tips on how to improve your guitar tone, including techniques for better playing and tips for getting the most out of your existing gear. These tips will help you make the most of what you've got, no need to buy anything unless you just want to ;)
We'll be covering two main areas: technique and tone. Why technique? Because this: I'm sure you've heard "tone is in the hands" or some version of that, and what that actually means is that technique plays a massive role in guitar tone. Understanding that, we’ll dive into some easy techniques that can help you improve your guitar playing, which will ultimately make you sound better. We’ll also discuss the importance of practicing regularly and playing in the pocket to create a tighter sound.
Then, we'll move on to tone talk. From using the right amount of gain, or not over-using various effects (unless the song calls for it) to understanding the importance of the midrange, these tips will help you get the most out of your gear. We'll also discuss the role of EQ and how to use it to shape your tone, as well as the importance of not over-compressing your guitar tone (again, unless the song calls for it).

First, we have the Triumph overdrive. This is based around one of my favorite two of my all time favorite overdrives, the Bad Monkey and the boss sd-1. Typical of me, though, I’m adding in additional EQ stages that allow a variety of different tones as well as internal switches in both that change the circuit quite a bit in order to add some glassy flavor.
The Phenom distortion is a circuit I’ve been working on for a few years now. Years ago we made several versions of a pedal called the plextortion but I never was 100% happy with it, so I restarted from the ground up using JFETS arranged in multiple gain stages instead of op amps and clipping diodes. Doing it this way the fets are driven much in the same way that you would use tubes to distort a signal, but it’s a unique circuit and not a clone of anything. I wanted to get a bit more of an old 5150 type of flavor to it. Please keep in mind - I wouldn’t necessarily call this an exact “5150 amp in a box” but it certainly heads pretty close to that direction.

Personally, I have way too many guitars one might say, but each one plays an important part in not only the work that I do but the fun that I like to have. These instruments all have different sounds, they all feel different, and they all excel at something that the other guitars do not excel at. Sometimes just picking up a different guitar inspires me to play something differently, or even helps me write songs out of inspiration. With that said, one could argue that my telecaster collection is a bit out of control at this point but there’s no way I could give one up unless someone or something forced me to. Today, we add a new one to the family.

It's a creative but fun way to re-think classic circuits. This could've gone a variety of ways but for this video I wanted to try to keep the sound of the classic circuit mostly, but I wanted it to be a bit "chewy", something with a little more teeth when you dig into it.
