I HAVE TURNED OFF COMMENTS ON THIS VIDEO because I was getting a lot of comments about the unhoused community. I always tell people to use discretion when following my bike routes and the reason I make these videos is to show exactly what it looks like so that people can make their own decisions. I personally feel safer going through an encampment then being on the road with careless drivers. But as a woman, there are many times I feel unsafe so I understand. These days I feel more unsafe in my comments section than on the road. It’s amazing isn’t it? Anonymity breeds bravery.

Bike Route: From IKEA to McGillivray and Kenaston via Fort Whyte Alive

This can be a relaxing way to go from Sterling Lyon to Kenaston while avoiding car traffic. However, it’s not always an available option, because it depends on park hours.

This also involves sidewalk riding because some stretches have no safe bike infrastructure, but there is no interaction with traffic for the most part. This also features the brand-new crossing light at McGillivray and Brady Rd.

Safety Briefing

Sometimes it’s a little hard to hear on-site, so we thought we would record it for you to watch beforehand. This is also handy because if you’ve never been on one of our group rides, it’ll give you a good idea of what they’re like.
Special thanks to Ian McCausland (video) and Julia. I want to take a moment to bring attention to this force of nature. Julia chairs the Outreach and Education Committee and is committed to getting more people on bikes. You will always see her in our group rides with her cute dog, Willow. We’re so lucky to have Julia as a Board Director and though this is her last year on the Board, she will continue to chair her committee and undoubtedly keep showing up to help marshal the group rides. Julia lives car-free and gets around year-round, mostly on her bike. If you see her around, make sure to say hi. Her personality is as infectious as her smile!

This ride is rated Beginner+ because we take some quiet roads - not all beginners are comfortable riding a bike on the road. Hopefully, this video will help you feel like it’s possible. I also ride on the sidewalk for a couple of blocks because this connection still SUCKS THE BAG! It’s slowly getting better but, MY WORD, how old will I be when this finally happens?

Here are some of my thoughts on winter cycling. When I read Tom Babin’s book Frostbike and I read this quote, my heart swelled because he helped me put into words what happened when I started riding my bike in winter.

How to change the tires on a Mid Drive, Carbon Belt E-Bike

Patty Wiens - Winnipeg’s First Bicycle Mayor 2023-10-30 | I changed my Mid-Drive, Carbon Belt e-bike tires this week and it was way easier than I thought. I decided to make a video about it when we changed Ian’s bike tires because there isn’t a lot of information out there on how to do it yourself.

This will be useful if you get a flat tire or if you want to switch over between your regular tires and your winter or studded ones.

Tools needed: Tire lever, 16mm wrench, and a tire pump.

I used a yoga pillow to prop up the front of the bike, but you can use any pillow or blocks or just a blanket on the floor so that you don’t scratch up your controls.

I made a little mistake when I reconnected all the cables, but I’ll talk about it in the video and explain to you what I did wrong so that you don’t do the same.

Well, until sometime in the evening of this past Friday night, I had no idea what a Bike Jam was. I guess I’ve been pretty sheltered and conservative in my cycling ways, until I started to get more involved in my Twitter and Instagram Bike communities.

So, on Friday evening, when my new bike friend, Kurt tagged me on a bike jam post asking if I was going to the bike jam sunday night, I said “WHAT IS THIS” and “SIGN ME UP!”

When I was trying to think of how to even explain what Bike Jam is, I couldn’t think of how to describe it, so I asked my friend, Ian Walker to give me the elevator pitch. Here’s what he said.

Bike jam is a group ride with music where participants decorate their bikes up in brilliant lights and dress themselves in fun clothes!

If you haven’t been to a group ride before, it’s actually a really great way to ride on the roads without feeling unsafe. This group was very organized, with several volunteer ride marshalls making sure that the streets were blocked off as we rode by, and making sure we were always safe.

It was astounding how many people showed up on their bikes. We had probably about 400 people on their bikes of all shapes and sizes.

The ride went from Central Park, downtown Winnipeg, to the Northwest side of the city, back through Wolseley and ended up in St Boniface at Whittier Park where a little party happened.

Um, no one told me I had to have a nap during the day, or maybe sleep in a little, soooo I didn’t make it to the end, but you can bet I’ll be there next time.

Anyway, the best thing about a ride like this is that if you’re uncomfortable riding on the streets, this is a great way to get your feet wet, while hanging out with other like minded bike folks. The ride proceeds at a very slow space and you’ll have ride marshals ahead of you, behind you and on all sides.

This ride in particular only gets announced a couple of days beforehand, so you have to pay attention.

I’m excited for Bike Week and to celebrate this past year of growth in my active transportation journey I’ve decided to organize a group ride.

If you’ve been following my YoutTube channel, you’ll understand how empowering it is to ride a bike. Did you know that the history of women’s rights has been intrinsically tied to bicycles?

I read an article that in 1895, at the age of 80, suffragist leader Elizabeth Stanton claimed that “the bicycle will inspire women with more courage, self-respect and self-reliance…” Stanton predicted the power of the bicycle in transforming the lives of women, realizing that the independence women were gaining because of this invention would allow for growth in other areas of their character.

From the early days of the suffragette movement to the modern day mom’s taking their kids to school on cargo bikes, this mode of transportation has been crucial to our personal empowerment.

And that’s why I want to celebrate women of all kinds with this ride.

So if you’re a woman, or you identify as a woman OR you simply support the women in your life, then you’re invited to join us.

This will be happening on Saturday, June 10 at 2pm, rain or shine. We will be meeting at 1:30 on the North side of the Cargo Bar, at Assiniboine Park by the Duck Pond. The ride will be approximately 13 Kms and it should take about an hour, at a fairly chill pace.

The route will consist of some protected paths through the park, then the Harte trail and then some pretty calm streets.

The real question is, what are you gonna wear?

If you know me, considering it’s not -30 out there, I’ll probably be wearing a dress, but you can wear a dress, you can wear shorts or pants or even your cycling spandex! Just come on out!

We will not be providing bikes for this ride, so it’s BYOB - Bring your own bike!

After the ride, stick around to meet everyone and have some bevvies at the Cargo Bar.
