Black Bear vs Trash Can, aka I Fought the Bear and I Won. Phineas J. Whoopee 2023-06-06 | Since the Dixie fire in 2021, we've had a major uptick in problems with displaced bears. Being tired of picking up the mess, I started putting our trash in the back of a little used car until the morning of pickup. That worked well for 2 years, then not so much. Not wishing to suffer any further property damage, and finding that WM had nothing to offer, I decided to fortify my trash container. My intention was to ensure that, if the bear was to succeed in getting to the trash, he would have to destroy the container. Then WM can bring a new one. The bear worked on the can for 20 minutes before he gave up. I could only capture a minute or two near the end. Sorry for the quality, it was barely daylight. I am splitting 23 in. diameter 2-year old California Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii) which blew down in a meadow near my home. The specifications for this splitter state 10 in. diameter capacity, I find that to be conservative. At $300, these are very impressive little splitters.
