I'm so sorry for the unannounced hiatus, but I'm pretty sure you guys are used to it by now 😅, but don't worry, tis for all good reasons.Alright, I know you guys have been wondering why I haven't been posting as of late. Well, as an incoming undergrad student, you know what's up. I had to juggle with a lot of things and my life had never been this hectic until now, so I have to really start pulling my own weight. On the flip side, I've made a lot of progress on self-improvement, though I'm still lacking ngl, but it's never too late to work on yourself. Okay, I'm sidetracking now, let's get down to the usual routine, shall we?Before I start breaking down the contents of the video, lemme be real with you guys. I don't know where to even start with this. I've never made a YouTube video with so many components in it before, but I'll try my best. So let's break it down into 3 parts:1. Recording2. Mixing/Mastering3. Final EditFirst on the list, 'Recording'. I mostly recorded everything on my keyboard and got the audio extracted as WAV files soon after the recording session, except for the shaker, triangle, and rim-clicks, where I used my handy Shure condenser mic for recording. I tried to put together an almost exact replica of the original soundtrack, and I hope it did turn out pretty well to you guys.Secondly, 'Mixing/Mastering'. Simple volume tweaks and audio panning can get you far, but simply listening to it out of your speakers wouldn't cut it (Unless you have studio monitors), so I highly recommend using headphones before you watch this video, it's pretty satisfying to hear the sounds coming in different directions lol. I only EQ-d the audio of the piano cuz that's like the spotlight here and I don't want it to be sounding too bland or harsh or anything of the sort. I want it to have more warmth to it and remove any boxiness from the audio, but the thing is, I don't know if the changes I made were noticeable enough. I also didn't think it was really that necessary to EQ the other instruments since they blend in pretty nicely already, but what do you guys think?Lastly, the 'Final Edit', which was the video editing. I can only say one thing about this, and it's the fact that it took so long... 😭😭😭BUT, it was really rewarding now that it's done, (*sigh of relief*, finally done after 4 days of work with minimal breaks, crazy.) Final Fantasy VIII - 『Fishermans Horizon』[Piano Collections 🎹] nekonon 2024-02-26 | Okay guys, so a couple of things: I'm really tired and, I don't know what to feel about this video... So I guess this description will mainly be me critiquing myself lol 😭. First off, I'll talk about the tempo and dynamics. I think this was a decent attempt to play this piece but I think I played the melody a bit too harsh. I also played it a bit too slow considering the tempo of the original track. When I decided to record myself playing this piece, I just jumped straight into it and didn't even consider how fast I should play it, but let's just say it's my own interpretation and how I think it should sound like, because I always end up playing it at a slow and steady pace, unaware. Although, I still believe the original tempo fits the mood of the song much better, sigh it is unfortunate.Speaking about the melody being a bit too tinny and a little unpleasant for me to listen to (idk if that's the case for y'all), I think it has to do with my mastering (yes I did master the audio on Garageband, but we'll get to that), or maybe I wasn't paying attention to my right hand while playing, sigh.Like I said, I mastered the audio track (which is a WAV file, yes high quality ✨) I recorded out of the keyboard into my USB, plugged it in to Garageband and did some experimenting. Mind you, I wasn't aware of the issue just yet, but this would've fixed it, I just don't know how 😭. After a good 3-4 hours without breaks, I managed to dramatically improve the quality of the audio by EQ-ing it, but even after all that, something still felt weird. Because I improved most of the frequencies in the piano, the tinny sound coming from the melody became more obvious. I thought it was me slightly raising the frequency around 3k dB by a little bit, but after turning it down, there didn't seem to be any changes at all. I couldn't find any other way to reduce the tinniness of the sound, so I just decided to call it a day.Now, that was the end of yesterday.. This morning, I got up, opened my Mac and worked. While I was editing, I noticed something strange. The camera angling was off, bro you can barely see my right hand on the keys 😭. This is actually pissing me off ngl. Well, content is content.Like what some ppl say, "it is what it is 🤷🏻". I'm a bit sad but, I did the best that I could. I'm sorry for the unannounced hiatus, but I took a break from YouTube and focused more on my academics for the past year, I'm doing pretty well now so don't worry friends. Sorry to disappoint those who are anticipating another Mitsukiyo for the next upload but sigh, covering as well as editing those types of videos takes a lot of time and effort and we sadly don't have that much time in our hands rn. But I assure you Mitsukiyo covers are not dead and you'll be seeing more of them in the future, though they're currently in hibernation, so please pardon them.Okay, let's talk more about the hymn and this arrangement. I recently just stumbled across this beautifully arranged piece, and I started to appreciate Gospel Jazz more and more. Turn back time to winter 2021 when I first came to Canada (nope we are not going through how I've adapted into this whole new different environment lol), I got toured around my new school, which is a predominantly black school (kinda scary at first ngl). Long story short, I discovered my passion for jazz and gospel in this school and it gave me an opportunity to grow and expand my horizons as a pianist. Anyway, enough sidetracking and back to the video lol.I noticed Korean gospel pianists have their own unique chord progressions (might have rooted from African-American culture too, so I'm sorry if I gave any misinformation, I'm just too lazy to do some research rn hdbchjsbdj), not deep diving into this cuz I'm not really educated enough to talk about gospel and jazz, but I noticed them really emphasizing 4ths when they play, and they apply it to almost any Gospel song, which I find enticing tbh. 4ths are such a character bro, I play 4ths sometimes whenever I improvise on the piano, it just makes any song sound a little bit more juicier yk what I’m sayin (Yes you heard that right, I do improvise, I've learned in my school down here, not formally though, I still mainly taught myself). Deemo - Edmund Fu『Walking by the Sea』[LyricWulf Arr.] nekonon 2021-03-14 | Deemo, one of the best rhythm games beside Arcaea, Cytus, (and BanG Dream? lol maybe, I play it too), but I know there's more rhythm games that I haven't seen yet. "Walking by the Sea" is one of my favorite soundtracks in "Deemo". The jazz harmony was off the charts, I don't know why but I get goosebumps sometimes whenever I play this piece. This arrangement is LyricWulf's, if you didn't know him, he's doing synthesia tutorials, but I downloaded the sheet music's PDF so I didn't watch his tutorial (I actually watched it when I was younger but I didn't finish it, and then after a few years, I thought about practicing it again but in sheet music). Your Name -『Sparkle』[Piano Cover] nekonon 2020-12-05 | This video was recorded at thursday night, and it's also my 2nd night recording my arrangement. I need to rest again so maybe at the end of this month or in new year I'll upload again...Sorry if I'm inactive in the past few months, it's just because of the exams and other important things at school. I also had tonsillitis and runny nose, but good thing my tonsillitis healed and my runny nose is starting to heal, thank God 🙏.Well anyways, I've worked for this arrangement a long time, like 1 - 2 months I guess? I'm actually very proud of this arrangement, even though there's still a lot to improve. It's pretty hard to play this with my mask on as this arrangement is harder than my usual uploads, so I removed it haha. Still, I have some mistakes while recording this too, and my hands get pretty wet while playing, but I'm satisfied with this haha.Let's move on to the arrangement, At the very first part 0:03 which is the intro, I based all that in the piano accompaniment in "Your Name" music video edition by RADWIMPS. As you can see, this version of "Sparkle" is not full, with only 3 minutes and 21 seconds compared with the full version that is more than 6 minutes.In the 1st stanza 0:22, I decided to do the continuous piano accompaniment in the right hand, while doing the bass and the melody in the left hand at the same time, just like Theishter did. Well, it's not too difficult if you have proper training and your hands have became fast and relaxed, but still you need to focus as it may lead to false tempo or even mistake.At 0:52 is an instrumental that leads to the 2nd stanza, which I based again in the original song, and I made it exactly what it sounds like in the original song as much as possible. Also, I added a little bit of my originality on the left hand (bass).Starting from 1:10 - 1:40, is composed mostly of my own arrangement. From 1:10, you will hear a short, soft sound as it will lead to the intense part in 1:25, which is probably the hardest part of the arrangement, because of the long jumps that was made by the left hand (I messed up the last jump at 1:36 lol).At 1:40 also is a super short and quick entrance that leads to the pre-chorus at 1:42. Most of the pre-chorus was based on the original song, except for 1:50 - 1:53, which is my own arrangement again. At 2:04 is very risky, because this is a very fast arpeggio, and to top it off, it is played on the black keys only, which will be very annoying if you slipped your finger and accidentally played some white keys haha.The chorus was based also on the original song, with a little bit of my originality. At 2:20, is a fast running octave, that I added as an incredible twist.And for the last one, the editing lol. My skills at editing were improved by experimenting at Filmora9 (my editor) and searching tutorials on YouTube, although I'm not as good as a true editor haha.In the video, I added sick edits (for me, but I know it's still for beginners lmao).
