TalonVGC 2025-02-23 | Wolfey's Perish Song EUIC Championship Team, and all Top 8 Teams

Wolfe just won EUIC with a wild Life Orb Koraidon, Perish Trap team with Gothitelle and Scream Tail. It's the first major tournament won by Koraidon, with newcomer Dyl's trusty Iron Treads take on Miraidon barely falling short in the finals. Bulky Miraidon dominated all the way through Top 8, with an offensive Kyogre and balanced CSR Rain team also making it in.

Birmingham Regionals wrapped up with a Miraidon win, but Kyogre in Finals and throughout the top tables, along with Groudon throughout Top 8 was a major surprise. Calyrex Ice Rider had some creative teams do well despite its failings in online tournaments, Zamazenta faltered a bit and CSR really was hurting.

TalonVGC 2024-12-30 | Top 16 VGC Teams from Huge Tournaments

I recreated the top teams from the Victory Road December Challenge #2 and the Trainer School tournament. Between the two, there were $2000 on the line so competitors brought their best stuff, with the tours ultimately being won by Terapagos set-up and Dondozo CSR Hyper Offense.

However, Sun teams went super deep this tour, with Groudon having its best weekend of Regulation G, reaching Top 4 and Top 8 with two very different teams, one from Joeux9 featuring Jumpluff. A Koraidon team with Ditto that was on the rise before Worlds had a deep top 8 run as well, as well as another team with Trick Room Flutter Mane.

Thomas DeRosa finished 64th at Louisville Regionals with a creative Rain team centered around supporting Shell Smash, Mystic Water Blastoise. It has Follow Me, Psychic Surge Indeedee to redirect attacks and allow Blastoise to set-up Shell Smash, and stop priority moves like Fake Out and Grassy Glide from flinching or KO'ing the lowered defense Blastoise. Choice Scarf Drizzle Tailwind Pelipper lets you gain speed control if you want to start clicking Water Spout without setting up, while providing Rain to boost Blastoise's Water moves with Drizzle. Psychic Seed Sneasler activates its Unburden ability and doubles its speed in Psychic Terrain, acting as a secondary mode for the team, while Archaludon is an alternative defensive Rain sweeper. Dragonite rounds out the team with a Scale Shot Dragonite to raise its speed stat to outspeed and Haze away Dondozo stat boosts, which otherwise could be a problem for the team.

WolfeyVGC made top 8 at Louisville Regionals, going 11-3 with Yanmega as a Tailwind setter for an unorthodox Ursaluna team. He has a Trick Room setter in Porygon2, so the Ursaluna is meant to go under Trick Room and sweep faster teams, and go under Tailwind to sweep slower teams. He used Stalwart Tera Electric Power Herb Archaludon to break through Follow Me / Rage Powder cores and OHKO centerpiece Pokemon like Gholdengo or Kingambit. He also used a White Herb Sneasler that could ignore an instance of Intimidate and gain a speed boost, or Close Combat and remove its defense drops while activating Unburden.

Sinistcha is the perfect partner for this, healing it on switch in with its Hospitality ability, redirecting attacks from it with Rage Powder, and further healing it with Life Dew. This strategy can be weak to Primarina, so you have Smeargle to put it to sleep, Gholdengo to dent it with Tera Steel Specs Make It Rain, and Assault Vest Torkoal to tank hits and hit hard back in Trick Room.

This FLAMIGO Team BROKE THE META in Regulation H

This team by Toler Webb reached 3rd place at the first Regulation H Pokemon VGC Regional, with multiple other finishes in the top cut and Day 2 with the exact same 6. The team centralizes around Porygon2 and Ursaluna as Trick Room sweepers, with Flamigo and Gholdengo as alternative modes for the team to function outside of Trick Room, with Incineroar and Amoonguss supporting both directions of the team. Flamigo's Scrappy ability allows it to hit Ghost types with Fighting moves, along with ignore Intimidate, meaning it can consistently outspeed and OHKO Gholdengo whether they have gone for Tera Steel or not. It also has supereffective coverage into the top Pokemon in the meta with Brave Bird for Rillaboom and Close Combat for Incineroar.

Choice Scarf Tera Water Kyogre Water Spouts are dangerously strong, especially paired with Follow Me and Helping Hand Indeedee to protect / boost it further. Indeedee's Psychic Terrain also ensures you can put Miraidon teams to sleep with your Smeargle to create opportunities to use Shed Tail, giving your Kyogre a Substitute to hide behind and go for its attacks. Baxcalibur can also receive the Shed Tail Sub and use Swords Dance / Scale Shot to set-up sweeps. Agano went 6-2 in Day 1 and finished 82nd in the World with Sableye and Altaria, two Pokemon that have been basically nonexistent in this competitive season. Sableye sets up Gravity for Altaria's Sings (and the rest of the team's inaccurate attacks) to hit consistently. Life Orb Groudon can then hit sleeping targets with 100% accurate Precipice Blades and soften them up for a Choice Scarf, Tera Fire Chi-Yu Heat Wave in Sun in the late game.

This team got 16th place on the Battle Stadium Ladder in June. It uses an odd Room Service Brute Bonnet to outspeed Calyrex-Ice Rider in and out of TR and get a Spore off. Rocky Helmet Volcarona is a strong defensive tool to redirect damage from Koraidon, and Raging Bolt deals wild damage with Tera Electric Life Orb Protosynthesis boosted Thunderbolts.

This HUGE Regulation H Tournament Surprised EVERYONE

TalonVGC 2024-08-08 | $1000, 450+ player Reg H tournament won by some surprising teams

Himmyturner (socials below) hosted a massive, 450 person Regulation H tournament to kick start the format, with a $1000 prizepool incentive for players to bring their best stuff. It was all streamed on his channel, and the teams are public (below).

AV Electro Shot Archaludon Rain proved to be the big winner, and is going to be the strategy with the biggest target on its back early on. Maushold Beat Up + Annihilape Rage Fist also proved exceptionally strong, with both strategies featured on the winning team with a Sinistcha to provide healing for both bulky set-up sweepers. Lots of interesting strategies and trends emerging, and surprise Pokemon like H-Decidueye, H-Braviary, Espeon, Jolteon, and Primarina that haven't been strong yet in Scarlet and Violet are finding niches in the metagame. It's a cool format, looking forward to how it develops after Worlds!

BASCULEGION Is BROKEN in Rain

TalonVGC 2024-08-07 | LO Basculegion, Choice Band Urshifu, Kyogre Rain team

This interesting Kyogre team made Day 2 of the last large tour before Worlds. It features Assault Vest Kyogre with Tornadus to get Tailwind up and do consistent spread damage with Water Spout and Bleakwind Storm. After one of your Pokemon are knocked out, Choice Band Urshifu Surging Strikes and Basculegion Wave Crash can clean up the remaining Pokemon. As the battle progresses and more of your team goes down, you can start abusing Basculegion's Last Respects to get some startling KOs. The team also features Tsareena to block priority moves like Thunderclap and Grassy Glide that threaten your water types, and Chien-Pao to boost your physical attackers' offensive power with Sword of Ruin.

Japans #1 Calyrex-Shadow Team Could WIN WORLDS

TalonVGC 2024-08-05 | #5 / #3 Ladder Clefairy CSR Team That Could Win Worlds...

A bit confusing with the intro, but I recorded a live with the 5th place team from the June Rankings, and then the July Rankings came out right after recording, and the 3rd place team has one mon different (Urshifu into Amoonguss) and is otherwise very similar. I have the details for both teams below!

This CSR team is focused around fully supporting a Nasty Plot sweep. Incineroar and Clefairy provide damage reduction and can create turns to set-up with Fake Out / Follow Me, while Grimmsnarl can allow you to slow play early with screens and spreading paralysis for a late game set-up sweep. Raging Bolt uses Electroweb to deal with faster Pokemon and Thunderclap OHKO Choice Scarf Urshifu which could otherwise cause be an issue.

Lightning Rod RHYDON is the Perfect Miraidon Counter?

TalonVGC 2024-08-02 | Fairy Lightning Rod Eviolite Rhydon Day 2'd Huge Tour

This Rhydon set can wall Miraidon and allow Calyrex-Ice to sweep one of its hardest matchups. Rillaboom can turn off Electric Terrain on Tera Fairy Dazzling Gleam variants, and the rest of the team is just a generally strong CIR team with Dark Ursh to win the mirror, and Pelipper to Wide Guard against CSR. This team made Day 2 at the VR to Honolulu Tour #2, the last big tour before Worlds.

The ruleset for VGC after Worlds, stretching from September to January, is all Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet, excluding Legendary, Paradox, and Mythical Pokemon. I ranked every legal Pokemon in a tierlist to gauge the powerlevel of the new format, Regulation H.

WEEZING + REGIGIGAS Is a TERRIFYING Lead

TalonVGC 2024-07-31 | Poison Gas, Neutralizing Gas Weezing is the perfect supporter on this team

This Weezing - Regigigas Team was able to day 2 the last large grassroots tournament before the World Championship. It uses Poison Gas Weezing to allow a bulky Dondozo / Tatsugiri combo to chip away at opponents. It also has Regigigas to benefit from Neutralizing Gas and take OHKOs on things like Incineroar without their Intimidate activating.

The Final Tournament Before Pokemon VGC Worlds...

TalonVGC 2024-07-29 | Last $2000 online tour before Pokemon VGC World Championships in Hawaii

The Victory Road to Honolulu #2, a $2000 online tournament mirroring the Worlds format, happened this weekend, and the team results are out. Calyrex Shadow Rider and Miraidon teams dominated the top of the tournament, with Calyrex-Ice Rider, many people's highest ranked restricted Pokemon, not even making the final stage of competition. Zamazenta, Kyogre, and Terapagos also did similarly poorly, calling into question what the Worlds metagame will look like.

This Japanese LUNALA Team Nearly TOPPED the Ladder

TalonVGC 2024-07-27 | #6 and #14 Ranked Lunala Team uses Maushold to surprise opponents

Kuro and Cona, two Japanese players, reached #6 and #14 on Battle Stadium Ranked Ladder with this cool Lunala team. Maushold uses Friend Guard to boost its already impressive defenses and Follow Me to redirect attention from Lunala, giving it time to use Power Herb Meteor Beam to boost its SpA and do crazy damage.

This YANMEGA Strategy Can SWEEP Teams

TalonVGC 2024-07-24 | Gravity team with Choice Band Groudon and Hypnosis Tailwind Yanmega

This Yanmega Gravity team finished 26th on the Battle Stadium Ladder in June. Every set on the team outside of Rillaboom is wild. Gravity Booster Energy speed Iron Crown sets up Gravity for Groudon and Yanmega. Iron Crown can either stay in and set up Calm Minds to become a sweeper, or switch out to Groudon as Yanmega uses Hypnosis to put the opponents to sleep before using Tailwind. This allows Groudon to outspeed its opponents and hit them with 100% accurate Choice Band Precipice Blades. You also have a Gouging Fire to boost your damage further with Howl and use Scary Face to slow opponents down once Tailwind ends. Lastly is the Regidrago, which holds Iron Ball to surprise underspeed and OHKO opponents that set up Trick Room to weather your fast offensive modes.

This VENUSAUR Team Could Win the World Championship

TalonVGC 2024-07-22 | Worlds Finalist has dominated online tours with Koraidon and Venusaur

VGC 2023 Seniors Finalist Robbie Shaaij got Top 8 in a $2000 prize pool tournament featuring top Masters players. He did it with the only Venusaur team I've seen find success in Regulation G, with a Koraidon providing Sun. Venusaur can throw out quick Sleep Powders and enable Koraidon to deal wild damage with Tera Fire Sun / Orichalcum Pulse boosted Flare Blitz. The team has an unconventional Trick Room setter in Porygon2 as well as Ursaluna, which can both handle Miraidon, an otherwise tough matchup for Koraidon teams.

This Rank #1 KYOGRE Team is Unbeatable...

TalonVGC 2024-07-19 | Jeongso Lee got 1st (and 3rd!) on the Battle Stadium with a powerful Kyogre team. It's an unconventional Calm Mind Leftovers set supported by Fake Out Rillaboom and Incineroar, as well as Screens Grimmsnarl with Thunder Wave to keep the speed (and RNG) advantage over the course of longer paced battles. As a secondary offensive option there's a Magnet, Tera Electric Raging Bolt. Relying on Origin Pulse as Kyogre's main offensive move can lead to inconsistencies, so it's a credit to Jeongso's play that they were able to reach such a high rank on two game carts.
