Cyber Hallway
When the dream of owning a home is out of reach for Tails, Sonic uses his vast wealth to help a friend in need.

It's an alright fighting game compared to what I've seen on the N64 so far! The back of the box says 'More Fight! More Often!'
What does that mean?

Hey, this game's more difficult than I remember. Especially Sector Z. Wow. What's going on there? That Star Wolf fight was so good, though. Really worth it after all the struggles.
Normal mode is done. We'll start Expert mode next time. I edited out most of the failures but this one still ran pretty long. How about some chapters?

Whatever you do, don't unplug the HDMI cable from the Retro Gem while the game is running. No high score entry this time, but at least I got to keep my medals.
In this episode, we finish getting the medals we missed along the blue route, while picking up some new medals from the yellow and red routes along the way. At this rate, we should be done with normal mode in a couple more videos.

Taking it easy today, playing through the blue route of Star Fox 64. Not sure if I'll get all the medals yet, but I'd at least like to see all the stages before moving onto another game.

I ended up not really enjoying this one. There's not a lot of different enemies to fight, and not a lot of different weapons to fight the enemies with. This is a game about taking a key from one area and using it somewhere else. Maybe I should have tried playing as a different character? Either way, I'm glad that I checked this one out, but I'm also glad to move on to something else.

The N64 version seems to run and control just fine, but Wikipedia tells me that we're missing out on some cutscenes in this port.
I'm still curious to see where this game goes, so expect a part 2 soon. Honestly, I think it's a little underwhelming given the lack of enemy variety and weapon variety so far, but they're going for something else here, so I want to give it another chance before moving on to something else in the N64 library.

Or maybe go back to the N64. Remember when we needed to find all the bombs in the city? No thanks.

We're getting close to the end here. Once Last Story is over, I'm tempted to go back and get all the A ranks, but there's not much of Shadow left to go after this.

I'm not sure what's so specifically diabolical about this one. Is it because we fight Diablon at the end?

This game takes some of the worst parts of 90s fighting games and puts them together in 3D. It's like Mortal Kombat, but the fatalities are boring and you can awkwardly sidestep out of the way of some attacks. There are some auto combos in here, too, like Killer Instinct. None of it really comes together, though.
Luckily, my strategy of running in and grabbing enemies repeatedly works pretty well here.

Oh it opens a door on the other side of the map? That seems really inconvenient to me. I would just put the switch right next to the door that it opens. That's how I would do it. That's how I live my life.
I've seen enough of this game at this point and am fully ready to move on to something else. It doesn't quite reach the heights of the first two Doom games, but it's definitely better than Turok.

There's no fog! The framerate is solid! Sure, it's a bit dark and there's not much of a soundtrack, but I'm having a pretty good time with this game so far. I love how quick the levels are and how fast you can move. You don't need to jump when you move this fast.

Also taking this opportunity to test out the OBS noise suppression to (hopefully) cover up the sound of the fan that's keeping the N64 cool.

What's not fine is that while recording this video, the N64 froze about half a dozen times. Truly a tragedy. I've got a backup plan, but for now we're got an N64 that's probably overheating. Come on buddy. Keep it together.

I never really vibed with this one. Between the bizarre controls, the fog, having to stare at the map the whole time because of said fog, and the platforming, and the framerate dropping whenever you look at a dinosaur, and the huge, labyrinthine levels, and the dudes with blowdarts just at the edge of the fog, and killing enemies just for them to reappear a few seconds later... It's a lot! I don't think it's worth playing this game on the original hardware today!
It was cool to spend some time with such an early console FPS. There just wasn't much like this at the time on consoles. Historically, it's important. At the time, it was really popular. But as far as FPS games go, I think a lot of PC FPS games of the time aged better than this one did. I'm content to leave this where it is and move on to other games on the system.

It turns out 150cc is a pretty relaxing time, too. I haven't sat down and played all of Mario Kart 64 in a long time, and playing this game really highlights just how far this series has come over the years.

Age hasn't slowed him down one bit, but Snake is held back by my lack of skill in this video. Apparently, this game got ported to older consoles as well, and this really plays and feels like a Genesis/SNES era sports game. Our controller has so many buttons, but this game only needs 3.
This one didn't quite grab me as much as Wayne Gretzky did, but I'm tempted to go back someday just to make Snake even stronger. Maybe this is worth following up on.

But...! This was a fun look at a really early N64 game. I never really played FPS games on this console back in the day, so I'm looking forward to seeing how later games learned from the design of this game. Console shooters are such a normal thing now, but it's hard to imagine where they would be without early titles like this one.
