Arkansas Darter Conservation Ranchlands 2017-02-06 | .www.ranchlands.com.In 2014, we filmed Paul Foutz and his crew from Colorado Parks & Wildlife releasing several hundred Arkansas darter, a small fish native to the Arkansas River Basin, into a site in the Chico Creek at Chico Basin Ranch. At that time, the darter were listed as state threatened and a candidate for the federal endangered species list, due to their decline in habitat and range. At the end of 2016, a survey concluded that the species is no longer a federal candidate, due to the great work of CPW in re-introducing the fish to sites on the Chico and elsewhere!.Video by Isaac Cole

The Rushers' vast knowledge of horse training has encouraged all of us to spend more time working with our saddle herd to improve the relationship between horse and rider when we're out working cattle in the pastures. The majority of our time is spent preparing for, executing, and checking on the rotation of cattle through pastures in a migratory fashion. From stimulating new plant growth through grazing and returning nutrients to the soil through fecal matter, urine and carcasses, to laying down plants over bare ground to protect it from the sun, retain moisture and protect seedlings, grazing ungulates play a central role in fostering a healthy prairie ecosystem. We plan the movement of cattle to mimic the historic grazing patterns of bison, who would graze an area then move on, not coming back to a plant until it had time to rest and recuperate. This practice is in ranchers’ direct interests, as the health of the land is directly linked to the health of the cattle and therefore the health of our business. But it also stems from ranchers’ emotional connection to the land they call home and their desire to protect and foster its vitality.

It was brought to the Americas by the Spanish and was soon incorporated into the American cowboy tradition. Our education team talks to them about brandings and other traditional ranching practices. The students visit the bird banding station to observe scientists collecting data on migrating birds and learn about the ranch's role in conserving the high prairie ecosystem.
February Ranch Roundup Ranchlands 2016-03-22 | This month Ruby and Raven warmed up for branding season. It seemed like we worked cattle in the corrals every single day, non-stop. From pregnancy testing to shipping steers, every animal on the ranch was brought through the corrals in late winter snow that turned to mud. And cutting up meat for our freezers brings the crew from all the ranches together once a year.

September 2015 Roundup Ranchlands 2015-10-07 | This month Chico Basin Ranch welcomed many visitors–local students attended our education programs, partners from the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory set up their biannual bird banding station, and we began to say our goodbyes to the summer wildlife and vegetation that will soon disappear until next year.
