Maa Vue - Cānghǎi Yī Shēng Xiào (滄海一聲笑) A Sound of Laughter in the Vast Sea Cover Maa Vue 2021-01-29 | As I was digging into the meaning behind the song: “Cānghǎi Yī Shēng Xiào," or "A Sound of Laughter in the Vast Sea"; from the 1990 film “The Swordsman'', I discovered that the storyline included characters of Miao (Hmong) descent. In a particularly compelling scene, one of the Hmong characters, Qu Yang, sings this song on a boat with his Suav-friend Lui Zhengfeng.I translated Qu Yang’s parts into Hmong to better understand the duet in their respective languages. The Hmong lyrics aren’t exactly the same as the original lyrics, because the original lyrics depict an abstract mood and have a lot of symbolism tied with Chinese culture. The English translation is more of a "feel" for the lyrics rather than the literal meaning. This song expresses the free, easy outlook on life and values of a hero who doesn’t care about fame and fortune. It really touched me on how it was used in the boat scene to show the relationship of Qu Yang and Lui Zhengfeng. It meant that even though they are not of the same ethnic, have differences and views on life, they can coexist with each other and be friends. No matter how the world may view them, they won’t allow that to ruin their friendship. How beautiful and empowering is that?During a time when the world could use a little less judgment and a little more understanding, I want to share this cover to encourage unity.
