HyperTough 12V Battery Pack Mod Thrifty Tool Shed 2024-03-17 | In this video we look at the Hyper Tough 12V battery packs from Walmart. I did take time to modify some packs just for fun and see if I could push the Hyper Tough to keep up with the M12. I did not prepare as much as I normally would have for this video as I was not expecting as much request for these mods. I know its not worth the time to replace the cells in a $25 battery pack. HyperTough 12V Impact - Can it keep up with Milwaukee? Thrifty Tool Shed 2024-03-03 | In this video we look at the Hyper Tough 12V Compact Impact Wrench from Walmart. At a kit price of $59 it is a super handy tool to have. I have seen many videos show these as sub-par and maybe way short of the M12 line, but I have not seen that with mine. In fact it is the opposite, I have been very surprised by the performance for price with mine. A friend at work Patrick and his neighbor Joe had used theirs and worked on some automotive projects with them and kept telling me how great they found theirs to be. Patrick gave me his ratchet and impact to test with and after some testing I also bought my own to make sure theirs were not anomalies. Mine seemed strong as well so I decided to go ahead a record some footage of it. I did take time to modify some packs just for fun and see if I could push the Hyper Tough to keep up with the M12. I did not prepare as much as I normally would have for this video as I was not expecting these compacts to have this much torque. Hyper Tough 12V Ratchet Comparison Thrifty Tool Shed 2024-02-18 | In this video we take a look at the Hyper Tough 12V tool line from Walmart. We will focus mainly on the 12V Ratchet today and some focus on the battery packs. I have a friend at work Patrick that asked if I had seen these and tried them myself. He has been saying for a while that he and his neighbor Joe have been enjoying using both the 12V HT Ratchet and the 3/8" Compact Impact since they bought them to help on a radiator and engine mount job. They really like the compact size and price of these. Both of these guys work with tools and work on their own cars and trucks so I knew it was something special about these tools for the price when he told me how surprised they were that the small Impact would even take off his F150 lug nuts torqued to 150 ft lbs. That's right, 150#. He also mentioned how well this ratchet has performed and its small size is very handy. I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance for the price so far as well. Dehumidifier 15V Power Supply Repair Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-12-24 | Merry Christmas! In this video we repair a 15V 4A Power Supply for a Mini-Dehumidifier. I have a previous video on this same Peltier dehumidifier with issues from the limit switches. I had to eventually replace the cheaper quality limit switches with real OMRON limit switches with no issue with those since. I now have a failed Power Supply on the same unit so lets repair it. This is such a simple unit with nothing but Peltier devices and a fan as the main components. Other than the switches and the PS it is not much else that should be problematic. Honda Accord Fan Replacement Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-12-11 | In this video we replace the A/C condenser fan on the 8th Gen 2010 Honda Accord V6. It started making a lot of noise like it has a bad bearing or bushing right before reaching 100K mikes. I removed this fan just a few months ago because it has to be removed to replace the alternator on the V6 version. If it would have been making noise then I could have swapped it while I had it off already, but that is how it goes sometimes. Tribeca Display Follow-up - Err Fix Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-11-26 | In this video we look at my 2009 Subaru MFD Multi-Function Display having Er and Err errors. I take time to show more detail under the microscope of the issues with the connector solder joints. In a Previous video we took a look at the Dim Multi-Function Display. We looked into how easy it is to get to and remove the display as well as reinstall. This first video also shows some detail on disassembly of the MFD. I also show some parts of the backlight repair attempt that I originally intended to share, but in the end just had to get a used replacement . GE Fridge Control Board Troubleshooting Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-11-24 | Happy Thanksgiving! In this video we troubleshoot a GE Refrigerator control board. These only cost around $130 or so. Not always worth the effort of repair, but as mentioned in the video it was about the timing. One of the guys at work had their fridge go out within a couple weeks of thanksgiving and nowhere local had one in stock. It seemed uncertain if the board he ordered would make it in before Thanksgiving. RELD Head Gasket Tester Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-11-16 | In this video we use the RELD head gasket test kit to test for any head gasket issues on our 2009 Subaru Tribeca. I had to put a radiator in this SUV a while back and we are going to take the Tribeca on the first long distance trip since that replacement. The radiator cracked along the passenger side on the plastic side so since I had no other issues with hoses blowing off etc. I believe the head gasket is ok. I do want the peace of mind before we go on our long distance family trip. I am behind getting this video out because I also had the fuel pump give issues and I had a lot of troubleshooting time involved in that and even more time putting together a video on the troubleshooting that. Shark Ion Robot Vacuum - Dust Bin Error Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-11-05 | In this video we take a look at this Shark Ion Robot Vacuum that gives an error for Dust bin not in place. We end up having to disassemble this vacuum to troubleshoot the Bin Switch. This belongs to a friend at work, its actually his daughters. It was received defective and I believe a replacement was sent out and they did not request the return of this defective unit. If we get it working it will keep this one from the landfill and hopefully be used for many years to come. Weber SmokeFire Pellet Grill Repair Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-10-31 | In this video we look at the repair of a Weber SmokeFire EX4 Gen1 pellet grill. I bought this grill off of Facebook Marketplace. It was reduced from $100 down to $40 due to the bad motherboard. I think it was a come get this thing out of my way deal. It was an awesome buy and ended up being a fun quick fix. I also spend time on video troubleshooting the grill issues with hot surface igniter (glow plug) and the pellet feed bridging by adding a repeat timer and vibrator to the hopper as well. I can also upload a video of replacing the parts to make this a Gen2 grill if needed. I know this issue has been around for some time and it may not be needed any longer. Spot Weld Method Test - Which is Superior? Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-10-12 | In this video we look into using two spot welding methods to put the nickel strips onto a cell. I did get a few comments about the way I used the spot welder in the last M18 pack build video. I held my welding leads close together on the same side of the nickel strip split instead of going across the split. I basically did this without much thought as I use solid strips 90% of the time myself. So this is my basic technique to get spot welds fairly close together for maximum current flow. The viewers of course are mentioning that the split allows the current to flow better into the cell case when it flows across the split. I have worked with packs for many years and I can see the point for sure. So I am wrong to use the solid strips as much as I do? Am I welding improperly by choosing close weld points over using across the split method? 2010 Honda Accord Charging System Issues Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-09-27 | In this video we take a look at a 2010 Honda Accord 3.5L with charging system issues. The charging system warning light came on when my wife was a few miles down the road. Thankfully as soon as she seen it, she turned around and brought it back home. I am going to take the time to walk through some of the troubleshooting steps and the final results of my repair. Plastic Trim Restorer Review Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-09-12 | In this video we take time to compare 2 different Plastic Trim Restorers. The Rust-Oleum Wipe New and the Plastic Restorer. I was trying to put the Wipe New up against a similar product to Cerakote, but ended up comparing to a much more inferior ceramic coating product. The Plastic Trim restorer did not perform nearly as well as the Cerakote showed previously in other comparisons such as Project Farms. M18 21700 Aftermarket Kit w/Molicel 4200mAh Cells Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-08-26 | In this video we take a M18 style aftermarket kit and install 10 Molicel 4200mAh cells into it. The total cost is about $75 so for about the price of an complete aftermarket pack we can put one together with improvements and high quality cells. I had a lot of fun with this build and really enjoy using the spot welder. I am going to send this pack to Torque Test Channel along with the Beast 10Ah LiPo pack and the Fake M18 pack to see if they are interesting enough to show the findings. M18 LiPo Beast Part2 (Testing by TTC) Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-08-19 | In this video we take another look at the LiPo Beast. Torque Test channel did test the pack and even though some rough numbers were impressive it was overall a let down. Once they received the pack it seems the M18 12Ah BMS board kept shutting down and it was rather sporadic and sometimes not even load related. Sometimes things just don't work out the best and I totally accept that. I can't help but wonder why though since I tested it here before sending it out and I could not stop the thing. TTC is of course testing way better and further than I can attempt. Just has me wondering if a bad connection at the BMS balance leads or something similar? Either way in this video we remove the M18 BMS, take the Lipo packs and connect them to the Aftermarket Board that I have and we will send it back in for testing and hopefully it will perform much better. I do take time at the end of the video to load test the pack as well as I can with a 3HP DC motor. I never had it simply cut out on me at all. So here's to one more attempt. So many thanks to TTC for testing this for us and taking time to report back the findings, send back the pack and also show us on video how it performed. Milwaukee M18 Modified 10AH Power Stack Beast Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-07-29 | In this video we take the housing from the M18 12AH pack seen in a previous video and turn it into a 10AH "Power Stack" style Beast. At least we hope it ends up being a beast. This is not for everyday use or compact what-so-ever it is simply for testing since Milwaukee has not come out with the 10AH Power stack yet. I hope to get this to Torque Test Channel to see how well it holds up and compares to many of the other packs on the market. I am still a small channel and I did not buy the best LiPo cells on the market to send off for testing, but I hope we have interesting results and the way I have the BMS connections hopefully TTC can use other packs in the future with the easy to connect style of this pack and use it many more times in future tests. Milwaukee M18 8Ah Modified for LiPo Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-07-15 | In this video we look at using the broken M18 8Ah pack by installing a LiPo pack to get it once again useful. This is the 8Ah pack that I bought that ended up really having 6Ah internals. I was hoping to use some of the Good cells in it to repair the 12Ah pack in the previous video. It did not work out that way for us, but let's see if we can still get a good pack from it. We will not get the high storage as from the original 8Ah, but it will be a high current capable light weight packs with easy to swap out or upgrade internals. Milwaukee M18 HD12.0 - Is it fixable? Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-07-01 | Update 7/3/23 - The $95 M18 8.0Ah from Amazon is a Fake! In this video we look inside of a faulty M18 12.0AH HD High Output battery. This pack was given to us to look at by a friend. Thanks to Ronald for giving it to us to learn from and to use for parts. This could have possibly been a repair video, but after some testing on the board and some bad cells I decided to go a different direction. I did try to get a broken 8AH pack to have some spare cells to possibly repair the 12AH and well that did not go as planned. It seems I was sent a 6AH in the 8AH housing! We have some other options for the next video or videos to take this repair further. This video has taken 2 months to complete from waiting on parts to arrive and testing cells and seeing how they test 1 month later. I know this video did get long, but I did not want to cut out a huge amount of the testing and troubleshooting. Jumpstart Warning Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-06-18 | This is a quick video about the 5S Jump Start adapters being sold online. These can seem to make easy use of power tool packs for a Jump Start. I have many videos using adapters for many things especially for portable power supplies using DC-DC Converters etc. I also have videos repairing Lipo jumpstarts or using the Lipo packs to replace an old jump start battery to give the jump start a second life. The unfortunate thing about using a 5S tool pack is that they can easily put out up to 21V and I personally would not trust this across my car electrical system. EGO Edger Repair Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-06-10 | In this video we look at a brand new EGO 56V Edger that is not rotating. I did buy this edger brand new and it was still in the box, but I bought it over a year ago when Home Depot was liquidating all EGO equipment. So that is why I do not have a warranty on the edger. It ended up being a really simple fix and it may not be a common issue, but just in case it helps someone else I will post this video. It may in fact be a manufacturing defect or oversight on many of these edgers. Toyota Tacoma 3rd Gen Fob Spring Button Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-04-13 | In this video we take a look at the spring button on the side of the 3rd Gen Tacoma Key Fob. This video was requested by Ryen, a viewer that asked about the spring and button on the fob since his came apart while he disassembled it for battery replacement. The button and spring are typically held in place with a tiny washer over the plastic stud either pressed on or ultrasonic welded in place it seems. Davinci Resolve In & Out Bar Removal Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-04-02 | This is a really quick video to show how to remove the IN and Out bar that will show up sometimes in Davinci Resolve. It has showed up on me several times over the last few years of learning Davinci Resolve and the first time was not pleasant at all. It took me much longer to get the bar removed than it should have. It is really easy to bump the "I" or "O" button on the keyboard and it will insert the bar. Removal of the bar is not as easy sometimes. If you realize it just popped up then easy enough, simply UNDO (CTRL + Z). The problem is of course, the time we don't realize it popped up and we have been making edits for some time. Honda Accord 8th Gen Shift Bulb Replacement Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-03-31 | In this video we replace the shift bulb in the 2010 Honda Accord. It not an easy access bulb, but is not as bad to get to as it first seems. I did go further in the disassembly of the console to show more detail of the bulb replacement. If you can get to yours without taking the cover off then you will not have to do the step of removing the shift handle. Rec Tec Pellet Grill Controller Repair (Recteq) Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-03-26 | In this video we take a look at a family members first gen RecTec Grill Controller. This controller will not power on. I enjoy working on some of the RecTec controllers (or Recteq as they are called now). They had to change the name pretty early on as the business was growing fast and needed to trademark the name. RecTec was already trademarked apparently. The cool thing is Recteq head quarters is only a couple miles down the road from me here in the Augusta, Georgia area. They are literally just down the road. We will troubleshoot this controller board and connect it up to 120V for testing and I will share how I typically test them with you in this video. Honda Accord 8th Gen VCM Disable Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-03-20 | In this video we take a look at a cheap VCM Disable kit "Muzzler" for the 8th Gen V6 Honda Accord. This kit helps slightly reduce the temperature reading of the engine so the VCM will not activate. The VCM system looks for the engine to be at optimum temperature before it will allow VCM or "ECO mode" to activate. By simply keeping the reading slightly lower the engine will stay running on all 6 cylinders. I will gladly give up a couple of MPG to stop the oil consumption and many other negative effects of the VCM system. Dyson HD01 Hair Dryer Repair #3 Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-02-18 | This is the third Dyson HD01 hair dryer repair. The first Dyson repair was a minor repair, and the second one needed a board level repair. This 3rd dryer is not turning on at all like no power. I will just focus on the repair in this video and have a separate video for the disassembly and the reassembly to keep the repair video (and any I may have in the future) as short as possible and we will always have the other videos for reference if needed. I have taken the time to create a quick detail drawing of the heating circuit etc. to help with troubleshooting as well. I also mention in this video briefly about a project I have been working on for a company that wanted a Dyson dryer for an application with much reduced heat and air flow than the factory one will adjust to. The company found me due to one of these repair videos about the prototyping work for them. It was a fun project and a blessing to be a part of. I have a couple of Dyson HD01 repair videos and I get many comments and questions from those videos. One of questions that I get asked a lot is " What is in the box on the Cord?" I have always assumed it is some power filtering for the high frequency brushless motor circuit. I am not sure exactly what is in it. DeWalt 3AH Battery Pack Repair - Lets make it a 4AH! Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-01-21 | In this video we look at a DeWalt 20V 3AH Lithium battery pack for a friend. I have an older video working on a similar pack and we get it going by simply replacing one cell with a very close matched cell. This pack is going to need all cells replaced so maybe this would be a good time to actually show a video of all cells being replaced. It's not always worth it, but in this case with the price of these cells let's do it. This pack should give many more years of trouble free life. DeWalt does have a more simple approach to the cell monitoring board making it more reliable in my opinion which makes it a lot of times worth the time and cost of replacing the cells (Not the FlexVolt though, they are some of the worst to work on). Garmin T5 Collar GPS Antenna Replacement Tips and Tricks Thrifty Tool Shed 2023-01-09 | This video is simply Tips and Tricks I have learned while replacing the GPS antenna on the Garmin Collars. I have shared in the past that I would use my 200W soldering iron and De-soldering gun for some of these repairs. I have since started using Low Melt Solder and Amtech 559 flux to help make this job much easier. I get asked a lot if I repair these for the public so I want to share this information with you since I do not have an actual repair service or business at this time. I simply try to share as we learn together in hopes that it may help someone else with the same issue. I have worked on several of these for a friend over the last few years. The DC30 and I believe the DC50 (if I remember correctly) have the coax quick connector on board for easier GPS antenna replacement. As we have learned the newer T5 and TT15 are soldered directly on the board! it sucks, but its not that hard to do. If you don't have the skill and tools to do this yourself hopefully you have a buddy that may be able to help after watching the videos. DuraFlame Heater Repair Thrifty Tool Shed 2022-12-16 | In this video we try to save a Dura Flame heater that has quit working. It worked for several years and the heater was a excellent heat source, but the temperature controls were never good at all. It would come on during the night while still set @ around 63F or 64F and the temperate in the room would be over 70F. It would be very inconsistent. I desire to save the heater and use it in the garage or shop. I will try to fix the heater if it is a simple issue, but I really want to add a separate T-Stat for control anyway since it never had good control. I really don't want any modified heater in the house so it would still work fine if needed for emergency use, but primarily will be used in the shop when I am out there working on a project. This is at the Plumbing supplies area at our Store in (Evans) Augusta, Georgia.
