Hot Temperature Measurements through Death Valley on July 9, 2024 William Reid 2024-08-14 | Air temperature is monitored during a drive through Death Valley on July 9, 2024. Official high temperature reports this afternoon at the automatic weather stations at Stovepipe Wells, Furnace Creek and Badwater were from 127.3F to 127.4F. The video begins at Towne Pass, along Highway 190 at 4950' elevation on the west side of DV at 3:30 p.m. Eventually Highway 190 dips below sea level after Stovepipe Wells, and the Kestrel 3000 instrument shows 130F and a little higher on several occasions towards Furnace Creek. (Official temperature measurements typically are averages covering a minute or more, and one-minute averages on the Kestrel were as high as about 129F this day.)The Kestrel was taped to the side mirror of my Nissan Xterra with the impeller removed. The fast airflow through the temperature sensor on the Kestrel ensures that temperature measurements are not inflated due to poor exposure or a lack of proper ventilation. This instrument is considered to be highly accurate on temperature measurement, and the readings as they frequently update should be considered authentic. Again, though the very sensitive Kestrel showed temperature readings above 130.0F a handful of times, I figure that had an official weather station been in place right then and there that an official maximum temperature reading of about 129F would have been recorded.Interestingly, the oasis environment of Furnace Creek caused a brief decrease in temperature of about 3-4 degrees (F) along 190, along the east side of the resort. Included here is a visit to the official Death Valley weather station at Furnace Creek, and temperature measurements along Badwater Road. Visibility was very poor due to fog and ocean spray. Rock Crusher is near the western end of the island with a good exposure to the large WNW swell.

Spencer South Dakota Tornado Chase/May 30, 1998 William Reid 2022-09-03 | Storm chase video culminating with the deadly tornado which impacted Spencer, South Dakota, near sunset on May 30, 1998. This lightly-edited version includes some of the chase-setup details, the approach to the storm along I-90 and the escape to the east towards Sioux Falls. The chase team consisted of William Reid and Cheryl Chang in my blue Pathfinder, and Martin Lisius and Keith Brown in Martin's red SUV. Our group stopped along Highway 38 and 435th Avenue in McCook County to video the tornado as it approached (four miles east of Spencer and six miles west of Salem). Sadly, the tornado killed six and injured about 150 in the town of Spencer. Video was shot on a Canon L2 Hi-8 camcorder. Last Chance, Colorado Tornado July 21, 1993 Higher quality dub William Reid 2021-03-02 | This is an updated and higher-quality upload of the Last Chance tornado of July 21, 1993. This video is by storm chasers William Reid and Charles Bustamante. It lasted from about 7:50 to 8:11 p.m. MDT. The location of the tornado is Washington County, Colorado, from about 5 miles SE of Last Chance to about 10 miles ESE of Last Chance. A second large tornado formed about 20-30 minutes after this one, a little farther east. It hit some farm homes and was rated F3.The approach to the developing tornado is from about minute 1 to minute 9. The tripodded tornado video is from about minute 9 to minute 20. Thereafter, Bill and Charlie were at or near the residence of Philip and Lois Scott, just west of the earlier tripodded video location at Roads T and 7 in Washington County.Thank you to Angel Escobales for managing the high-quality dub from the original Hi-8 tape to computer file.
