Angela Fehr Watercolour-100If you're shopping for an e-bike and you're like me, not really up to the challenge of getting in shape for cycling season, a cruiser style bike is the way to go. The seat is comfortable, the tires offer a pretty smooth ride even on the rough gravel I tested it on, and the speed is just right for enjoying the views while being able to put some pretty good mileage on in an afternoon. Set up was easier than the booklet included with the bike suggested, with quite a few of the steps outlined already done for you. They send all the tools you'll need to set the bike up, except a pump for the tires. It's useful to have a second person with a little bit of wrenching experience on hand to help with setup. My husband saw me muddling along and sped up the process when he noticed I had the fork turned backward while trying to mount the handlebars to the frame. We got the bike assembled in less than an hour and after charging the bike overnight, I was riding the next day. Take your first ride in a level place with a long straight stretch so you can get used to the pedal assist and the boost of speed it provides. Make sure you test the brakes first so you can ride confidently! My additional modification was adding some non-slip matting to the back rack so I can set my paint palette on the rack as a little table while sketching on location. It's a little hack that makes a big difference for an on-the-go painter. The first time I rode this bike I met a dirt biker on the road who was SO curious about my e-bike. He offered to trade bikes so we could test drive each other's rigs! I'm still chuckling over the idea of jumping on his high-powered dirt bike (I was wearing a skirt at the time!) but I love that my bike turned into a conversation starter between me and someone I would probably never have the opportunity to visit with. It was a fun exchange!

Pit Stop! A Fun Studio (Bathroom) Tour Angela Fehr Watercolour 2023-07-27 | Creativity speaks a multitude of languages! For #worldwatercolormonth I'm posting a new video every day in July. Today it's a little different, I'm walking you into my studio restroom, showing off the design skills of my carpenter husband. Wade built my studio top to bottom and he put a LOT of input into every aspect of the design - he has great taste! For the bathroom, he had full design vision for the space and I let him run with it. The gas station theme was a fun outcome! At one point, I had painted the bathroom wall yellow, and tried a "Venetian plaster" effect with terracotta rub-on texture. It wasn't working, and as we both looked at it and thought about what to do instead, we spoke simultaneously, "STRIPES!" It was a great moment of creative synchronicity. One reason I wanted to share this video was of the way it speaks to caring about craftsmanship, that creativity is really a focus on making beautiful even small, overlooked elements and moments. I thrill with connection to creativity when I see someone who cares enough to invest intention into whatever they are doing, and this kind of caring should be celebrated, called out and honoured.

Because watercolor is painted on paper, it needs protection, and this is why most watercolor paintings are framed under glass, with a mat and backing board. I also enjoy a more contemporary look and method of mounting watercolor paper on a wood panel, sealing with a wax & resin compound. This makes it easier to hang the painting alongside paintings on canvas or panel and removes the glare of glass. Color mixing neutrals in watercolor: Getting Good Mud Angela Fehr Watercolour 2023-07-13 | For today's #worldwatercolormonth daily video, I'm answering a question I get asked pretty frequently - "why don't my neutrals look as pretty as yours?" Mixing complementary colors to get "mud" is a wonderful way of bringing some quiet, complex neutrals to your painting. They will make the pure colors look more vibrant and create lovely transitions between more saturated hues. Mixed neutrals can also help unify your color palette and make your painting more harmonious, but there is a little bit of finesse that can help you create lovely neutrals that don't look flat. If you're learning watercolor technique, don't lose sight of your inner artistic style! It's easy to get so focused on painting correctly that you forget to invite your inner voice to express itself in your art. How can I know if my painting is any good? How to critique your art. Angela Fehr Watercolour 2023-07-12 | It's one thing to look at a painting and estimate how well it matches the reference photo, but if my goal isn't photo-realism, how can I tell if my abstract or semi-abstract painting is any good? I'm sharing a new video every day for #worldwatercolormonth ! Subscribe to my channel so you don't miss an episode!When it comes to loose watercolor, opinions are going to be all over the place as to whether a painting is successful or not. Some artists will insist that good design or composition is the number one thing you should look for when you are evaluating a painting's success. I disagree. You have only to look at contemporary art for the last hundred years to know that there are many paintings that were created with different goals than merely good design. You are free to make decisions about the success of your work based on more intuitive criteria - on your own reaction to the work and whether it satisfies your desire for self-expression. This is a hard subject to talk about because people will read that last paragraph and think I am advocating for an "anything goes" kind of ethic that casts aside ALL standards of excellence in art. I'm not. But I would argue that an educated artist - one who spends time viewing a diverse range of art, who thinks deeply about what emotion they want to convey in their work and commits to pursuing that - is an artist who will hold high standards for their work, even if composition isn't the first priority. While I don't prioritize composition in my work, I am always thinking about how a viewer will experience my painting (that includes composition) and I am unwilling to settle for less than a strong emotional response when I view my own paintings. In this video for #worldwatercolormonth I'm demonstrating an exercise I do frequently; no limits, intuitive mark making to help me develop my brush handling instincts and create strategies and new marks that are vital and interesting. One thing I thought was interesting was that the marks I describe in this video as "amateurish" (I actually prefer the term "unsophisticated") are actually my favourite marks in the entire painting. Even though they aren't marks that look skilled and nuanced, they have an energy and strength that adds a lot to the painting. So I try to have a mindset of welcoming even the marks that initially look "ugly" to me.
