My Michigan Tech: Madison Mattila Michigan Technological University 2022-11-28 | Madison wants to run a non-profit organization that serves youth in foster care. She wasn’t sure how to begin, so she started at Tech without declaring a major (totally OK to do!). A course taught by professor Sheila Milligan in Michigan Tech’s College of Business was so good that it helped Madison decide how to move forward.She’s on the way to her goal by working on an accounting degree from Tech, a broad major that gives her the solid foundation she’ll need to operationalize her dream.Her next step will be going for an accelerated masters (bachelor’s + one year = a master’s degree). It’s an affordable, convenient way for Madison to up her earning power and prepare for her certified public accountant (CPA) credential.It’s a lot. But when she visited during a scholarship opportunity her “safety school” moved from the bottom of the list to the top. The stuff family members who’d gone to Tech told her about the interesting jobs they landed and how Greek life is different here made an impression. The biggest factor in her decision? The people she met.While she waited a year to get her bearings before joining a sorority, Josie joined the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) right away. The largest organization in the world that helps women achieve their full potential as engineers and leaders has a super friendly and active chapter (led by an amazing mentor) right here at Michigan Tech. My Michigan Tech: Jacob Jackson Michigan Technological University 2022-10-18 | Jacob signed up for a research lab on a whim. His choice to try something new changed everything. Working with lasers on deep brain stimulation to help alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease showed Jacob how what he’s learning in class can make a huge difference in the world. He wasn’t lost in a crowd working on a tiny part of the project. Jacob worked one-on-one with the two principal investigators. That individualized experience enabled him to learn about all the aspects of the work and feel comfortable interacting with professors.Jacob found his community of friends by joining student groups that share his interests and focus on professional development in biomedical engineering. Fluid Dynamics: Michigan Tech Researchers Take it to the Tank Michigan Technological University 2022-04-29 | Welcome to Hassan Masoud’s Complex Fluids and Active Matter Lab, where water tanks, glowing particulates, and mechanical fish lead Huskies to wondrous discoveries about the everyday flows, power, and potential found in natural locomotion. Swirling orange particles set in motion by a simulated school shed light on how collective movement impacts the system. It’s one of several research projects the lab conducts in fluid dynamics, experimental hydrodynamics, and transport phenomena. Feed it to oil-eating bacteria and transform it into nutritious protein powder.
