Leaking Air Compressor Tank (Repaired?) hffcom 2024-03-29 | My attempt at repairing a tank failure due to corrosion using epoxy and a machine screw. It seems to have worked... but for how long? The condition inside the tank is unknown, but today I do not have to buy a new compressor. This compressor worked well for many years but had one flaw, which was the inaccessible drain valve. I seldom drained it because of the difficulty so this resulted in excessive corrosion inside the tank.

I am making 50 in this production run with some improvements in the process to increase efficiency.
Platform Bed Complete Build hffcom 2021-06-05 | There are lots of ways to make a platform bed but I prefer to have it without LED lights or sharp corners that protrude outwards in the dark of night, waiting to make your shins bleed. This design is flush to the mattress and low to the ground and with a full toe kick all the way around because its just better for your body parts. The platform comes apart in two halves for easy moving and has ventilation holes that are concealed with the toe kick. I used cheap spruce lumber and one sheet of poplar plywood. The spruce is not the best quality and if you use this material you will need double the amount to account for waste factor, but still is cheaper than #2 pine. We got a Dreamcloud mattress and are very happy with it and the functionality of the platform design. The ventilation is important to allow moisture build up in the foam to dissipate. The construction method for this project was very clamp intensive but there are no exposed nails or fasteners on the outside. If this bed were paint grade, then the framing could be stapled instead of clamped. I found a new use for silicone bumpers as alignment pegs for the wood slats. also very helpful in the finishing process as all sides of the slat could be finished at once. I will have this design posted on my site for download momentarily.

Making Cat Furniture: Litter Box Cabinet Design and Build hffcom 2021-01-30 | Concealed litter box inside a custom designed cabinet that enables easy access for cleaning. Joe is pleased with his new home and is very warm. For the finish, I did the following steps: 1) spot prime the knots with shellac binz. 2) two coats of latex paint. 3) flat poly varnish inside and out. 4) waxed the pull out shelf runners so it slides good and does not stick. The top was a reject reclaimed doug fir counter that was laying around the shop for years. I resized it for this project and looks good in the hallway. Our new home is small and there was no space for the litterbox area so this was an essential project that turned out to work great. Don't forget to buy my silicone bumpers.

I bought some new cordless drills and bits. My advice is not to spend too much on tooling up at the shop. Some power tools are insanely expensive and an unnecessary expenditure. I avoid these tools (no festools allowed in my shop). Some power tools are cheap but work really great. Today I am building a router jig for flattening bumpers that had a minor vulcanization problem. Find out in this video when I add up the times for each step making small (8x11) and large (11x16) cutting boards with cherry and hard maple. These hardwoods have been locally sourced and dried in the shop for a few months before processing begins. I used my video editing software to add up the times for the entire process and then calculate an average time to make one board. Ultimate Downdraft Table Build PART 2 - Making Turn Tables and Accessories hffcom 2019-11-27 | Woodworking efficiency optimized with shop-made accessories that makes this downdraft table even more Ultimate. The turn tables will make sanding edges and corners much faster. I made two turn table sizes, one for cutting boards, and a larger size for door panels. The platform risers give the option of using the turn table as a stationary shelf when not in use as a turn table. This will require further experimentation but so far it looks practical. The work stops made with XL orange bumpers will be very useful as a functional barrier which can be placed anywhere on the top. The sander docking station will allow for rapid transfer of tools. The two 6" sanders will have 80g and 120g and the 5" sander will finish up at 150 grit or 180 grit, depending on material. Part 3 will be a demonstration of the whole system in production. Cutting board production will now begin.
Ultimate Downdraft Table Build hffcom 2019-11-02 | Woodworking sucks better with the ultimate downdraft table. Now I can sand cutting boards all day long without wearing a mask. I modified my dust collection system in a previous video to accommodate the new 6" connection and flexible hose. I start with a section of SCH40 6" PVC pipe that is used for the manifold. The design incorporates my 5/8" DIA soft silicone rubber bumpers for the work surface. The super grippy silicone provides effective vibration control and protects the wood surface from marring. These bumpers have completely changed the functionality of a workbench top which I will review and discuss in a future video. I made the top part removable so that if a tool or pencil falls inside I can just lift off the top and retrieve it. The screen around the inlet pipe prevents large objects from entering the dust collection system, so large shaving and chips will have to be cleaned out manually every so often. The dust collector I have is a 3hp impeller type which provides over 2000 CFM capacity. The first sanding test was a success. Air flow distributed evenly across the entire surface. I will sanding many cutting boards in the breeze. UPDATE: I made accessories for the downdraft table in PART 2 - woodworking efficiency is now optimized and ready for production. Woodworking Joinery Tip - Half-Lap Pocket Hole Combo 2x4 Frame Fast and Strong hffcom 2019-10-17 | This is a great method for making pocket hole joinery work better with thicker material like 2x4. Pocket hole joinery is designed for 3/4" material and doesn't work well with large thick frames, but adding a rabbit cut increases strength and assembly speed for structural framework. With my truck frame I delivered a large load over bumpy roads without any shifting. All the engineering was tested and approved.
Painted Storage Bench Custom Furniture Complete Build hffcom 2019-10-12 | This storage chest was a challenging project even though it looks simple enough. I made it more difficult by lowering the cabinet bottom 2" to maximize storage capacity. Typically it lines up with the lower trim piece I put on to hide exposed screws but doing the bottom this way I have to use lots of pocket hole screws and assembly is more complicated. Also, I used really poor quality 1x6 tongue and groove pine because I thought I had enough wood but it was all leftovers from other projects and warpy. This makes building even something simple much more difficult. oh well its done now.
