Employee's from as far away as Poland, Mexico and Canada flew in to the celebration. Our own Norman wanted to make it extra special by milling out a memento based off of the first item we milled on the first 1500MX prototype. This memento has a a wave pattern and curved edges all around so he machined it using the microARC 6 4th axis for hte majority, used 3D printed workholding for the bottom. 1500MX Mist Collector Installation Tormach Inc. 2024-10-10 | The 1500MX Mist Collector is the best 1500MX upgrades to your mill if you plan on using a minimum quantity lubrication system. The fine mist can fog up your enclosure quickly, blocking the view of your parts during cutting. The mist is returned back into the enclosure. Please download and review the 1500MX Operator's Manual before starting the Mist Collector installation. tormach.com/support/mill/1500mx-documentsThe installation of the mist collector is relatively straight forward but you have to keep in mind the extra height of the lifting tools needed, and of the lid height for filter replacement. The Tormach 1500MX - Through Spindle Coolant (TSC) Installation Tormach Inc. 2024-09-09 | Before you start your installation of the Through Spindle Coolant Kit, you must make sure you have installed the flood coolant kit. You must also download the 1500MX Operator Manual from our website and read all the warnings and cautions and familiarize yourself with the procedure. This ensures that the metal chips are cleared away as soon as they are cut from your material, and to prevent the surface of your part to be marred. It also ensures that heat is dissipated effectively. All this will help make improve your parts surface finish. Tormach ZA6 | Setting Up the Keyence Safety Scanner Tormach Inc. 2024-01-23 | We have added an extra safety product to the ZA6 robot other than the light safety curtains carried on the Tormach website. The Keyence device is a laser safety scanner that sits in the corner and observes a plane of 270 degrees in either direction at the corner. If an object, or person, enters into the area of detection, there are several levels of safety. At the furthest point, the Keyence can be programmed to slow down the robot, and if that person or object broke through the second level then it would completely stop the robot. If you are in a business, school or teaching environment then you know that it is important to protect students from the robot. Setup is key to make sure any potential injuries are avoided. After the robot has been setup next to the mill you will then need to get them to talk to each other with some simple network configurations. You can connect through a local area network, or by using an inexpensive network switch. PathPilot 2.10.0 Overview - A Ton of New, Exciting Features Tormach Inc. 2023-12-12 | The PathPilot team has been hard at work creating a ton of new updates to the GUI that will change the way you look at the information on screen, literally. The most obvious is the orientation of the interface. Now you can choose to have PathPilot monitors in either portrait or landscape mode. In portrait the screen gains a larger area for the tool paths and extra space in the persistent controls. Since the Operator Console is fixed, those changes don't apply there, but all the other changes are available. Now we have added the Block Delete button that many of you have been asking for, as well as the extra mist button, and the expanded vertical keyboard. Another unexpected upgrade is the camera system. Now you'll be able to add up to four cameras depending on your system configuration. We're sure these changes will be welcome to all our users. And as always, there are no charges for these extra features, unlike other companies. We hope you enjoy them. Tormach Garage Series, Part 8 | Cutting First Part Tormach Inc. 2023-11-14 | In the last of our garage series videos, Jeremiah Daws walks you through the last steps to cutting your first part. In the previous videos he explained all the steps to get here. In part 8 he starts by going through the conversational screens to setup your parts. You will need to pause this video to get the correct information onto each of your profile, pocket and drill/tap pages. Since this is your first part, he explains how to use the max velocity, and the feeds & speeds sliders. If you set the velocity and feed slider to zero, then start the program, the machine won't move. You can then raise the sliders to slowly start the program. This way you can check the progress on your first cut. You can press the Feed Hold button to pause the progress. Once you are sure everything looks great you can raise the sliders to 100%. After your program has finished cutting the part, use a micrometer to check the measurements. If they look good the part can be removed. You can use a CAM program instead of conversational to create the same part and then load it onto PathPilot. Tormach Garage Series, Part 6 | How to Choose Coolant Tormach Inc. 2023-10-24 | Before cutting your parts, you have to decide on how to remove chips from the surface to prevent the chips from being pulled back into the cutter and recut, which will cause poor surface finish. Tormach offers several options: Flood Coolant or MQL, which stands for minimum quantity lubrication. Flood coolant is the traditional method of removing chips away from the cutting area with a literal flood of coolant. This is done through the use of powerful pumps that expel coolant out of a nozzle directed at the cutter. The coolant used is a mixture of purified water from an RO system or distilled water, and a coolant additive that helps lubricate the water, making the cutters job easier and will help prevent rust in your machine. Dealing with these large quantities of liquid based coolant will necessitate a water-tight enclosure and coolant holding tanks under the mill. Over time coolants can stagnate causing health issues, so it's important to remove the surface bacteria with a skimmer kit. Tormach offers one with the Tormach Skimmer Kit: tormach.com/oil-skimmer-kit-1100m-770m-39298.html To verify the quality of the coolant in your tanks, a refractometer can be used to check on the concentration of coolant, as water can be lost to evaporation. Flood coolant is a powerful option to forcefully remove the chips, but that force can cause a mess. If you'd rather not deal with all that coolant, then an MQL system might be a great match. This system reduces the amount of coolant to the bare minimum, some even call it near-dry lubrication. Tormach Garage Series, Part 5 | Basics of Cutting Tools and Toolholders Tormach Inc. 2023-10-18 | Choosing the proper tool holding and cutting tools is fundamental to getting the best surface finish on your parts. Tormach mills offer two types of tool holders, depending to the machine being used. Tormach's M series mills use the Tormach Tooling System, or TTS for short. If you've used a Bridgeport style manual mill these tool holders will be very familiar. The MX series of mills use the industry standard BT30 tool holders. This tapered toolholder is very rigid and secured with a pull stud, or retention knob. Both the TTS and BT30 toolholders have multiple different tool holding styles such as, solid, end mills, ER tool holders, drill chucks, shell mills and face mills. There are more, but these are the basics. Cutting tools are inserted into the tool holders, and there are even more varieties. The basics are end mills, ball end mills, drill bits, threading tools, taps, thread mills, and then face mills, which has multiple replaceable cutting inserts. Jeremiah explains the basics of securing the cutting tools into the tool holders. Once these are secure, then the tool height needs to be determined with either height gauges or and analog or electronic tool setter. He then covers the proper way to load your tool into the spindle and entering the height into PathPilot so that it knows the proper cutting distance. Tormach Garage Series, Part 4 | Workholding and Setting Up Work Offsets Tormach Inc. 2023-10-03 | Part 4 of the Tormach Garage Series dives into the important tools needed for proper workholding and setting up work offsets on your mill. That is done through the use of a vise, or in some cases multiple vises. A vise is similar to a vise you can find on your dad's workbench. Instead of being permanently bolted in place, it is secured to the table of the mill with bolts, and it has to be aligned to the spindle head. And because your vise will have to secure a wide variety of materials, of varying thicknesses and dimensions, there are many jaw configurations to attach to the vise such as: hard jaws, soft jaws, pin jaws, v-block jaws, talon grip jaws, and versa-grip jaws. Before securing the vise, you have to make sure there are no burrs or chips on the underside. A machinist stone is used to clean off the bottom of the vise and to maintain the surface of the mills table. The vise can then be secured to the table, but it need to be trammed. Tramming a vise ensures that the back jaw of the vise is perfectly square with the spindle head. An indicator, secured to a mag base and attached to the spindle is used to make sure that the rear jaw is perfectly parallel. If you have a thin piece of material, a surprisingly effective workholding technique involves paper tape and super glue. Heat resistant tape can be used in place of paper tape is you are using coolant. PathPilot Quick Tip | G Code Path Simulation Tormach Inc. 2023-09-28 | PathPilot has some tricks up its sleeves. Simplifying your life is always at the top of the list with the control developers. One of the ways PathPilot helps is by letting the user view the programs cutting tool paths. If you open the View Options tab next to the g-code window, then you have control of which tool paths are displayed. You can view them all, or select individual tool paths. If you aren't sure how a program is going to perform, you can simply set your z- height several inches above the workpiece and observe the g-code simulation in the window. Once you are assured the program is running right, then you can begin to cut. This can be reassuring if you have expensive materials or tooling.
